To be far Eurogamer posted a double feature on Space girafe. From the review I read there was no point to Darkfall. That Eurogamer are giving it a second review because of the angry reponses makes them better than most games sites. Even though they gave Sonic: Unleashed 4/10 which is wrong BTW. Despite the Dhalsim Sonic.

This thread was inspired by the RPS post: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/05/01/megabiff-its-megarace/#more-11001 Does anyone know of a way to get Ecstatica to work on modern PCs? I played it a lot when I was about 15-16 and I just loved how evil the whole game was. You could be killed within about 2 seconds, the suit of armour that didn't help you one iota, the fact that you could only carry two things (suck on it Halo) and that nothing, nothing at all, made sense. I played for some time and then the game insisted on crashing repeatedly no matter how many times I rebooted my PC. I'm curious to see if it is really bad, or really good/bad.

Nah, fuck it. Little Big Adventure was great. As much as I'd like a bunch of people to try and reminisce over Ecstatica you can't distract from the LBA adoration.

The All New XBox Gamertag Exchange Thread!
twmac replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Multiplayer Networking
GTA IV is starting to come down in price so I might pick it up. If I do I'll repost my gamer tag, it has been a while since I played online with anyone, was really in the mood for some Sacred 2 but of course it isn't out in Quebec yet. -
Finished this on X360 two days ago and the ending is pretty damn intense but I'll say no more. What I will say is that Ubisoft made some pretty questionable decisions in regards to the latter half of the game that made my time with it a war of attrition between me and the progress destroying bugs. Anyone playing this on a console, I advise you to have 4 saves on roatation at all time not just because of the (apparently fixed) corrupt save file issue but things like missions not triggering properly, NPCs being displaced and therefore not giving you the option to finish the mission (that happened to me on 3 separate occasions). Another time I was supposed to threaten this DJ Lord Haw Haw and whenever I pressed the Y button to do so it froze the game with only the Xbox Guide button able to get me out of it. The fact that these were all present and I still enjoyed it. Testament to the game.

I didn't want to find an old thread and throw this in there but here is a pic linked in Kotaku. It made me smile this morning while I was recovering from a hangover: http://robduenas.deviantart.com/art/Psychonauts-121466873

Watched some one play this while I was in Melbourne. It looked beautiful and it was nice to the guys who made Kung Fu Chaos rise from the ashes of their former company to do this. However, the arrow sections (twing twang?) looked a tad tedious.

Reeeeally? That (from second spoiler) always got me killed in about 2 minutes.

Obviously Final Fantasy is never going to live up to the best JRPG (made in Korea I think) out there, Enchanted Arms! Right?... Oh

Yeah, I don't think it is something that you can play now with no previous experience of it. The difficulty level is set blisteringly high, the visuals have aged badly and the story line is indecipherable. The game does some things that are virtually unforgivable in modern gaming, for instance there are instants deaths that have no sign posting at all and seem to be random. The visual style is reminiscent of Little Big Adventure, I think I went and checked that out after playing Ecstatica.
-
Yeah, there was a specific weapon that was really effective against the werewolf (the dagger I think), if you didn't have that it would take ages. So then the game starts throwing Minotaurs at you. I got as far as the abbey (I was carrying a book that happened to be the key to getting in there) and then the crashing started. There were so many things in that game that really shouldn't have been fun. Update: Well that was easier than I thought: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/204/Ecstatica.html

Don't worry about that, if it was the demo then the developers probably just took the same laws applied to the X360 version (unless you are a HD remix game called Street fighter then no online options on a demo) and the full version will have it enabled, surely? Also, MvsC2... Looked really nice but played cheaply. Don't get me wrong I liked it for the fan service it was but in terms of gameplay it lacked the depth of other fighters. Expect to see a lot of skilled Magneto players raping you through a hole.

Most of you probably already saw this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/bastard-of-the-old-republic-article But I thought I'd put this up nonetheless. It is an entertaining read and some of the immoral choices the writer makes does bring up the question 'When does a game stop being a game?'

I've been quietly getting excited about this one for a while. The way it was being described in the previews sounded too good to be true (it seemed to be based on an idea of a game that I'd always wanted to be made) so I didn't want o say anything until I'd had a chance to play it. The demo came out a couple of days ago and gives you the chance to play in one map, two different challenges, and three difficulty settings. The premise is a weird mis of Outtrigger, Project Gotham Racing, Time Crisis and Tony Hawks. It is a shooting game where by you are required to run through a fairly linear pathway killing people, the trick is a little like 'New York Minute' difficulty on Max Payne or the recent stunt man game, whereby you have to keep the kill score going to keep your multiplier or timer running so that you can beat the high score. There are ways of taking people out more stylishly for added points and there are a series of extras like signs to destroy to for more points and bonuses. Me and a couple of guys played this for about an hour and half last night and it rewards action fans and strangely rythm addictions as the only way to get bigger and better scores is by memorising every spawn point and position to increase the combo meter. I'm now fully excited about this game, despite the fact that I know that as soon as I go on LIVE there are going to be about a 10000 people who will own my score instantly. Anyone else gets the chance they should check it out.

That was a solid read actually. My only qualm I would say is that there seemed to be things in there that clearly were oppinions or feelings you had about the game that were bluntly stated as if they were facts. My favoured reviewers are people that write about stuff in a way that makes me understand why they draw those conclusions which in a couple of cases I didn't think you did. Certainly a lot of shooters do rely on bombast to pull them through, but I actually disagree that The Club needs this. Moreover I'm not sure why you thought it needed it. The Club, with more explosions, more feedback in the vibration, more colourful and varied levels would have distracted the user from the focus of the game (there are a couple of levels which I think fail because the path is too confusing). The focus being purely to kill everything that moves and to do it in a fashion that allows you to increase your score each time. Looking back at the comments I understand what Tracer menat by this being more of an XLA title. Not because it looks like one, but because it plays like one. The other point that you made that I wasn't keen on but understand is that you felt it got repetitive and became 'meh' felt too heavily emphasised on telling the user that they would feel like that too unreservedly. It would have been nice if you could have developed why you found it repetitive, at what point that indifference kicked in so that I could have gathered whether my patience would have given in or not. Like I said it was well written as an oppinion piece, something someone who has already played the game should read and see if they agree, but I'm not sure allotting a score and someone using it as a guide as to whether they would like it or not is prudent. However, if you do have anymore like that on games that I have played I'll definitely read them.

Wrestle, I'll check the XLA thread and add you if you want to, at least, check high scores against some one else who played it. I was compulsive-obsessive about it while I was in Melbourne last year and chalked up about 15 hours on it. Last time I checked I was ranked in the top 50 for quite a few maps (that might have been because there was only about 50 people who played it ) Gdf, I would be interested in reading your review, partly because The Club was one of my most loved games last year and I'd like to be able to counter point what you felt about it. I got the same feel as Wrestlevania when it clicked for him. The flow is perfect, in the way that a rhythm game holds the same kind of appeal to people. The music is actually really important too.

That's what I mean. The fact that you can end up despising yourself for the choices you make in a fictional world. A world where your actions don't mean anything when you turn the machine off. I remember reading Spaff's article on Fable where he talked about how it wasn't fun to be good and evil choices were just too much fun. Even in a game as superficial (albeit fun) as Fable I could not make myself do evil things I just didn't enjoy being nasty.

So didn't read the bit where he caused absolutely evil stuff on the same planet with Juhani on it? Nor did you read what he did with the Wookie and the blue headed girl (Mission?). Sure, in terms of story telling it might have been heavy handed, but in terms of game story telling I thought it was extremely effective. Horses for courses I suppose

Errr... The first thing that came into my head was 'Shit bag' when I thought of a vegetable. It isn't a vegetable or even food. When prompted for a tool, I swear, the first thing I thought of was 'Your Mum'.

Ah life, cruel mistress with a sense of irony. Soooo, as much as I don't like Rock Band I decided to sit down and learn a few songs so that I would at least not completely suck at parties by being the miser and refsuing to play the thing on the grounds that a) I don't like and I don't like the songs. I looked at the prices and I could have gone for the 99 dollars Rock Band kit, but didn't like the setup so I stumped for the Guitar Hero: World Tour kit with the Drums, Mic and Guitar (I was planning to give the Guitar and Mic to this girl I know that could've used them). 260 dollars later I walk home with it and set it up. I'd been using the portable rock band kit up until then and the results had been unreliable but entertaining (pads flying off the boxes I set up every time I needed to do a drum solo). I setup up the new kit and marched through medium and some of Hard almost immediately on Rock Band. Then my X360 died and the way it died is not covered by warranty (it is simply not displaying a picture) So now I'm going to return the Guitar Hero kit and get a new X360:hmph: That'll teach me to try and be open minded.

Man, you have to worry when it is Toblix who interjects to calm down the proceedings.

Hitman: Blood Money (or why Steve Gaynor is nuts)
twmac replied to bistromathics's topic in Video Gaming
The thing is, the game already gives countless ways to complete the level. I just started playing Vampire Rain and it made me hark back to Hitman: Blood Money(depite IO Interactive being amongst the rudest developers I've ever dealt with) because in Vampire Rain you are fucked if you make one bad call. Certainly alarms go off if you fuck up in Hitman, but at that point I usually cracked out the big guns and went on a rampage and would re-attempt the level at a later date using different tactics. I'm not saying that developers shouldn't be striving for even more diverse games but they need to take into account challenge. If the game can simply be solved any old random way then the challenge of replay just wouldn't be there. Incidentally IOI were very resistant to too open ended a game when Hitman was in full flow which will proabably explain why they made Kane and Lynch afterwards. -
I have HOW many unbeaten games? *foams at mouth*
twmac replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Yeah a lot of the mastered games set are done by the obsessives who stream themselves doing speed playthroughs. I think they have them archived somewhere, the punch-out one that some one showed me was both awesome and hilarious. I can't think of any goals to set myself so I'm sticking to 'Beat' or 'Completed' as the statuses (I also agree that the word beaten doesn't feel right). Also a good feature is the Fortune Cookie that selects a random game from your list and tasks you with completing (sure you can ignore it but where is the fun in that?)
