Okay, I hate to sound like that guy but I am a little worried about this: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/112/1121006p1.html http://i.imgur.com/ySfOY.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8S4xk.jpg I mean Matt Hazard was alright... But those suits... Is it me or do they not look rubbish enough.

Go see the old part of the City (gamla stan?) I am not much for architecture but the small cobbled streets and odd little shops and restaurants make it interesting to wander around.

Sorry I didn't answer back on this. Basically, Sweden are amazingly strict on their licensing laws. It means that you cannot buy any alcohol above 3% outside of the government run shops. And these shops generally close at 3-5PM. I was there for a week and Stockholm was beautiful, but for some one who likes to drink and drink heavily it was a real trauma trying to get enough booze to last you all day ahead of time.

Now that I have gotten over my giddiness about EDF getting a sequel, I wanted to mention a game called 'Dark Star One: Broken Alliance'. It just came out on X360 and is based on a two year-old PC game. So far it has been very promising, the game has a central story line around your upgradable ship (the titular Dark Star) and exploring space. This involves warping from zone, seeking out missions and excorting freighters as well as tradign produce from space station to space station. The dog fighting has been a hell of a lot of fun and reminds me of the good old X-Wing days. It is published by Kalypso (Tropico 3) and was originally made by the company who made Sacred 2. Just wanted to say that anyone interested in exploring asteroid belts, dukign it out with Pirates and generally exploring an open universe should ignore the terrible box art and give it a play.

Okay, if you didn't like the PC version then you aren't going to like this. The review on Eurogamer does sum up a lot of what I feel about this game. It is simply a nice diversion from all of the other games I have been playing, the peaceful cruising through infinite space, occasionally navigating through asteroid fields (with every rock being rendered). The fact that every space port is bussling with ships going about their day make everything feel like the episodes of Babylon 5 that I always wanted but never were. My advice is that if you have it muscle through the slightly clumsy tutorial because it really is quite delightful dropping into another star system, doing a quick scan for stuff in the area, waypointing to a space station for jobs, maybe tagging along side a bigger transport vessel as support or just attacking it and stealing equipment. I'll admit that there are probably better games (privateer and freelancer) but I have not played a game like this in over 8 years so it was so much fun to know that they still exist. The missions do get a little repetitive but the enjoyment I get from space faring is enough to offset it.

Sweet, so I now know 4 people who will buy this when it comes out. Going to get in touch with D3 to see if there is anymore info.

@Miffy hahaha yeah, the baffled responses of some people on this forum mirror those of the people I talk to in real life. I show them some footage or actual gameplay and they just sort frown in a combination of disbelief and confusion: Them: This is the game you love more than anything? Me: Yup Them: Okaaay Of course, then I make them play it for a few hours and everything changes, mostly. I couldn't spend much time this morning going on about how excited I am for this sequel of sorts but now I will. Earth Defence Force 2017 is still one of my most loved games. Its arcade simplicity, coupled with the levelling and collecting that goes on. The fact that the game encourages you to replay the game on ever increasing difficulties. The absolutely ridiculously implemented achievements (it has the least number of any game). In Edge's article looking back on this game it is true that the philosophy EDF has (if you can call it that) is such a throwback to more innocent times. However, the create your own set piece style with the open City and multiple routes in most levels combined with the two player Co-Op means it is never just simple. Gold, pure joyous, nutty gold. All I ask is for more of the same with new weapons and more alien variations, I am not even going to demand Xbox LIVE as part of the joy is sitting on a sofa with another person.

Toblix, it has been mentioned in the forums a couple of times. Mainly by me: http://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5746&highlight=2017 http://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6900&highlight=2017 And yes, it is an awesome game that you have never heard of. I would happily settle for them remaking Earth defence force 2 and re-introducing the extra playable character, creatures and missions.

Yes, I would be interested to hear how it went seeing as I could not be there I'd like to be able to live vicariously.

I have bought over 70 games on XBLA and XBLIG (and the occasional piece of DLC). If I was offered the opportunity to throw down 40-50 dollars that meant that I got given a 100-120 dollars worth of content (of my choice) plus the occasional other free stuff then I would be tempted because there is still stuff on the service that I want. However, if it were to do what the PlayStation Plus does then I'd pass as I already have a lot of online content so doing a pot luck would more likely net me stuff I don't want.

So after introducing some one to Bayonetta as they like Devil May Cry games I decided it was finally time that I actually finish it. I couldn't remember exactly why I had stopped playing at Chapter XII, I think I had simply become bored of the constant combo mashing or something. I skipped through a bunch of chapters and liked the nod to Space Harrier as well as the climatic battle that ensued. But then the game carried on for 2 more chapters incorporating the worst series of gameplay styles to end everything (turret sequence, clumsy platforming, on rails shoot out, boring boss battle and timed Streetfighter 'smash the car' section). It was awful. The worst part was that every time you thought it was over the game kicked back into 'action' and it left me tired and frustrated by the tedium. Now this might have been meant as an elaborate joke but it really wasn't funny by the time I triggered the final cutscene. The game reported that I had received the 'Stone' award for the last 2 chapters, as if I might want to go back and improve my performance grade. Frankly, I never want to play Bayonetta again. After the initial delight of the opening 4 or 5 chapters... This was such a misfire.

Now I feel really bad as I haven't even played Bioshock 2... Sorry Steve, I plan to play Bioshock: Part Deux eventually and when I do I will download Minerva's Den and play that also. I suck.

I watched this film that was supposed to be Mosquito Coast when I was about 9 or 10, except it wasn't. It was a cheaply made Vietnam exploitation flick where a group of American soldiers go into Vietnam (at the time it seemed to be so they could blow a whole load of shit up) and get picked off one by one as they go through a bunch of set pieces. The whole thing was done with the kind of gusto low rent Italian directors were used to churning out in the 70's and 80's (think original Inglorious Bastards) The thing is, when my parents realised they had let me watch this hyper-violent film they never let me watch again. The imagery from this film has stuck with me over the years, I can remember entire scenes from the film but I will be damned if I know the name. Does anyone know a good website where I could write down everything I remember about the film (one of the first characters to get killed is called Stone, they meet up with this missionary dude who gets crucified etc) in the hope that someone can solve the mystery for me? For awhile I thought it was The Last Hunter, I watched the trailer on Youtube and it most certainly isn't. I know someone is going to suggest I google it but I tried that already and the search brought me to IMDB which isn't great.

Those links are amazing. Will do some browsing and see if any hold the answer. Man those plot synopsises are incredible.

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 13: Day One Perch

So this is the new count down to tears? -
That hitch isn't on purpose? Played the game... It is good, I don't know anything about the comics or film. What I do know about is bugs and this game has lots of them. If you get hit during certain animations you won't be able to pick up any weapons until you die. My buddy had the game crash on him while remaining idle in the pause menu. During a Co-Op playthrough my housemate died just before we beat the first boss. Then on finishing the boss he was awarded the achievement for not getting hit during the entire World preceding the Boss. That said I am still having fun and I am glad that they are charging 800 points for it. EDIT: I am playing this on X360 2nd EDIT: Holy sweet Jesus, fuck. What the hell happened in the last couple of pages? When did this thread turn into the kind of stuff I expect to read in the comments thread on Kotaku? Also please leave Jim Mahfood out of it, his story lines might not be the best but I am very fond of his art work and doodles.

The opening of the film starts with a bunch of men in gillie suits sweeping a jungle briefly before jumping on a helicopter, the 'heroes' then emerged from the shadows. There was some kind of conflict between the captain of the squad and this dude who looked like he generally played russian characters in Chuck Norris Movies. The whole team go on a night assault on an enemy base and one of the team members (a chronic drinker) is shot and patched up by one of the Vietnamese team members, they leaev him behind as a result. They pick up an American woman at that same base and one dude noted that she needle marks all down her arm. They assault a larger base with one of the guys carrying a heavy machine gun under arm and the explosives expert 'Stone' getting wounded. After that I can't remember the exact chronological order of events (it was 20 years ago) but I think they went something like this: At that point they take refuge in a church and leave Stone with the Priest there while they go off and do something else that I can't remember (I think they had to rescue a chopper pilot who looked a little like Lee Van Cleef or Sam Elliot). When they return the church is in ruins and the lead goes 'Stone' (hence why the character's name is so vividly stuck in my head). Stone is dead and the priest was crucified. They attack a train and one of the members is shot while setting up the explosives he starts bleeding from his mouth as he setups a derail and gets blown up with the train. They then attack another base and one of ther vietnamese members attempts to find a path through a minefield. It was sort of implied that he has some kind of sixth sense for it but he ends up blowing himself up. The guy who usually plays Russians, I think, is then hunting down the team (the drunk dude who was wounded comes back in a hover craft and this annoys the Russian guy), I cannot remember why. Anyway, there are only the pilot, the American woman, some badass with a heavy machinegun and the captain left. They find a helicopter but a surrounded by the Russian dude and his team. The helicopter will only carry three for some reason, but the badass guy sacrifices himself. The last image is of the Russian guy trying to destroy the helicopter with a flame thrower but failing and instead getting himself surrounded and then consumed by the fire. EDIT: The guy I thought was the russian guy in Chuck Norris films is this guy: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0528433/ I searched through most of his films from the 80's and 90's but I couldn't find anything that looked right.

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 13: Day One Perch
twmac replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I am looking forward to listening to this at work tomorrow. I am not looking forward to the podcast ending... Fuck, there really isn't anything similar to this podcast that I can latch on to. I have tried with GWJ and DGR etc. But the podcast here is somthing I can listen to multiple times and still be entertained. I disapprove of any disbanding. -
Love this game, but I refuse to pay 1200 MSP for it.

Wow meeting these people in person was a very different experience. Sure there were a few coked up arseholes amongst the 40 strong artists that attended that 2006 festival and there were certainly a few that took the procedures very seriously but you could say that of any music scene or movement.
-
The festival in Part 7, I was actually at that one. Not sure it is embarrassing, although I would certainly say some of the sound recording quality in that particular episode wasn't great and as a result doesn't do the music justice. Coova is amazing. Her stuff and Bubblyfish, who was also at that gig, have a really interesting ambient style. What I like is that they really conveyed how the chiptune scene doesn't have a specific style. There were Jazz artists, Folk groups along side the more conventional electronic acts you would expect. That episode is really cheekily shot too. Apart from at the height of Friday and Saturday there was never more than 40 people at the show they did. Still, hell of a lot of fun.

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 12: The Silken Goku
twmac replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Will be sorry to see this end, again. These podcasts were an essential part of my week. The funniest part of it was that I had considered going to PAX East to see the show and then dismissed it because I had way too much work on. I am now regretting that decision. -
GDF, you should have no problem with a netbook. Generally Laptops have alternating power meaning you don't need a power converter anywhere in the world. I was in Stockholm a while back and used my North American Laptop everywhere, just needed the right plug adaptor. You will be fine, Stockholm is awesome. Except for their bullshit licensing laws, so don't expect to enjoy drinking in Stockholm. System Bolegeta I hate you.

Brendon Chung offcially likes Far Cry 2.

X360 doesn't have online multiplayer? I was under the impression that they were holding off on the Xbox LIVE enabled MP until the game was released on PS3 and PC? That is disappointing, as well as odd, if they have removed it from the X360. I cannot imagine Microsoft agreeing to put it on the Summer arcade list when it has less features than other platforms. I suppose it would technically make it unique.
