Well it has been a while but EDF: Insect Armageddon has a release date in North America, it is the 1st of March. The price is only 39.99 so I will be putting my pre-order in today or tomorrow: http://edfia.com/ I wrote a little bit about it on Aracadian Rhythms and will getting a review up for it a few days after release. Bring it!

Sorry, although I am in agreeance, I just had to post to laugh at the great tag someone added. Admin, if you wish to kill this thread, go ahead.

Errr, isn't the wrong opinions just a reference to something on the podcast? Or is everyone in on the joke and playing along? If that is the case mmm-hmmmm

Pure, unadulterated masochism. Also, it was good for a giggle.

Thanks, there should be more stuff over the following week and I have a weekly slot on Sat/Sun as we are planning to do weekly updates. The two main guys other than myself are great writers so I am looking forward to getting into a few more 'Second Opinion' bits (swiped from Idle Thumbs) as the site progresses.

"Auntie Pixelante" VS. Jim Sterling... MisandryVs. misogyny?
twmac replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Idle Banter
This gets very difficult to interpret. I read a bit of it and it looks like neither is right. This reminds me of a situation that happened a long time ago. I was playing basketball with a few kids about 3 years younger than me (I was 16). At first everything was fine but as me and a friend started beating them, smack talk became more abundant and more vicious. My friend, simply a calmer and better person, ignored these 13 year olds. They zeroed in on me and started calling me all kinds of names under the sun as a way to fuck with me. Then one kid, from the carribean, started calling me a Fag and a queer. At first I didn't care because, well, I'm not gay. But he pursued it, and it started to bother me, I mean if I were then surely this barrage would have been considered harrasment. It got my blood boiling, how dare this fucker be such a homophobe for the pure purposes of smack talk and putting me off my game? So I returned the favour. So I pulled the N word on him. Everyone freaked out, what I had said was completely unacceptable, my friend refused to hang out with me for a while because I was clearly a racist. Yet the first afronts, real or otherwise were ignored. I am not saying that Nigger is acceptable, what I am saying is that we work with the tools we are given. Just because someone is white, middle aged and middle class doesn't mean he is the cause of all the wrongs in the world. And harrassing someone (by making pornographic pictures of them) merits a response. I don't like Jim Sterling (his written reviews are alright somtimes) but I am uncomfortable at the idea that he can't play the same game as everyone else, even if I look forward to someone putting him in his place. -
Or God meant Mankind, the wrestler. He is omniprescent and omnipotent so he could have foreseen that Mankind shouldn't be getting any. The achievements for Portal on Steam must mirror the ones for Portal: Still Alive, which are a great deal harder than the Orange Box version.

Well the thing is, that is looking at the sentence from a Hetero centric view point: 'Thou shalt not lie with a man as thou woudst with a woman'. To assume that this is from the view point of a man, who is heterosexual (or who believes all men are heterosexual) is to then make the assumption that Homosexuality is outlawed. However, if we look at it from the point of view that Homosexuality could exist all that sentence is inferring is that you should not 'lie' (share a bed) in the same way with both sexes. So, having sex with a man would be okay as long as you don't have sex with women. The 'lying' would be different and so fine. It is wild interpretation, granted, but really you could take it to mean that the bible does not support Bisexuality. Bastards. Or it could mean it would be fine to perform certain sexual acts on one sex and not on the other, just so long as you don't overlap those types then you'd be fi- Anyway, Achievements.

This is also happening in Montreal on the 4th of February. Except it is a triple bil of Alien, Aliens and Predator.
-
Yeah, I finished it on the X360 too. That part you mentioned was the first game to give motion sickness in a long time, but it is playable.
-
That was the point. You can almost always make words mean what you want them to mean.

Eesh, sorry dude. Like the Bible, many quotes can be manipulated for example: 'it's just an effort to hunt down achievements' Is interpreted by many I know as 'Cheat the fuck out of a game', your definition is innocent and I understand that your version is good. But that doesn't mean that there aren't others who take this line and take it as doing stuff that means that people conglomerate and abuse multiplayer for achievements that should be hard unless everyone is collaborating. It is like the way in which homophobes often quote the bible with the paraphrasing: 'Thou shalt not lie with a man as thou woudst with a woman'. In my mind all the Bible is saying is 'Choose your sex and go for it, you aren't allowed to shag both both; if you sleep in the same bed as woman but you love the bumming (of men) it is fine' Your definition of boosting actually sounds like fun, as long as that involves taking on a challenge PvE and going for it.

Done. You will find me under twmacb. I have just written a piece on Achievements, both for a site I am working on and on my own blog. It should go live in the next couple of weeks. Also I am very on boosting, unless it is like that NBA achievement where you had to have a thousand people on xbox LIVE at the same time. That seems like a legitimate community effort rather than being a cheating git.

So, I started playing this as part of the metacritic challenge I am doing this year... So far it is way better than any of the 3-D GTA games I have played. Travelling around the world isn't as annoying due to the fact that the horses control well and you aren't constantly causing random automobile accidents. The world feels more alive by having less too, the random encounters make it amusing as you are constantly being distracted and mixing things up. Even if I ahve now shot three different guys all trying to attack hookers (it seems to be a popular pass-time). The opening is amazingly dull, consisting of tons of cutscenes, shaky dialogue, and loading screens, but it picks up a little about 2 hours in. It has struck me as one of those stoner games, one where you just let the whole thing wash over you. You do very little for hours on end but get tiny, incremental upgrades and advancements - much like most adequate JRPGs - you are never actually bored but the whole thing is never mind blowing.

I demo'd it at the gaming night I do on Thursdays and everyone took great delight in watching me die, over and over again. Really like it and agree that it is better than Tempura of the Dead (I did like that too). Need to get my fighting trousers on and try and beat more than a few screens. Thanks for the recommendation! If you liked that though you should check out stuff like Hypership out of Control! and You Will die. Short and sweet in their execution and cheap but fun for about half an hour.

Last year I did a '12 games before Christmas' challenge where I got people to recommend me games and I played them. This year, I had a look at some of the dubious practices exhibited by Metacritic and decided to have a little play around with that. Anyway I posted this: http://badgercommander.net/what-makes-a-metacritic-score And if you could take the time to read it and then vote for game from each bracket by emailing the contact email address I would very much appreciate more input outside the people I work with and some of the other stragglers.

I have a tie breaker! http://badgercommander.net/fw The results should be up by the end of the day, thank you to all who voted. Although it does look like I have some right stinkers to play.

Have you ever played a game based on a franchise you don't really know?

That's the one. -
That's on the list of films I am going to watch.

Yeah this is a case of art influencing art etc There is an interesting Cracked article on films influencing real life and people's perceptions. I'll track it down at some point. -

I can help you there as I too became really interested in that period. First off is the Blu Ray version of Red Cliff by John Woo. Make sure you see the 3 hour version, it is all based around that period and is beautifully shot. You will even recognise characters from the preview. Second is this site: http://threekingdoms.com/ Ignore the colin powell bit and scroll down. It contains info on different versions of the full novel as well as a fan translation. The fan translation isn't bad and it is an epic read. I think there are even multiple languages available. -

I played Sword of the Beserk: Guts' rage on the Dreamcast and then read the comics and watched the show. I've probably done it with other series but nothing springs to mind right now. -
Thanks, I am planning to go and see Black Swan on Sunday. I think I just need to watch some other world cinema. A few more cynical English films. Some Japanese, Thai and Hong Kong films. For example I have never seen Chung King Express nor 2046. That needs to be rectified. I also need to see a few more Russian films that people have been talking about. As for German films, I still haven't watched Goodbye Lenin!

That it was actually good? On a side note, for a film review challenge I have been doing I watched Scott Pilgrim vs the World (okay), Gamer (great first third, dismal rest of film), Stay Alive (CliffyB is credited as games advisor), and Hackers (this film gets worse and worse). I just watched Centurion, it was good in a gorey sword and sandals way, the acting is solid but I really feel like Neil Marshall needs to move away from Scotland. His themes are starting to overlap (in Doomsday they build a wall around Scotland in Centurion they start building Hadrian's wall) and although they are still entertaining nothing has matched The Descent. I also watched a bunch of films on the plane back from England all of them largely forgettable (Take him to the Greek, Dinner for Schmucks, The Town, The American, The Switch, The Other Guys). I am starting to get genre fatigue as American films really don't seem to be able to make anything even remotely interesting. Oh yeah, I watched the new Piranha film. That wasn't even remotely interesting. Most of it was shot with cheap 3-D gags in mind (a piranha burps out a flacid penis, a girl vomits onto the camera), and the imagery is disturbing but not in a thought provoking way... I don't know what I expected but it isn't even particularly fun from a gore perspective.

This was an instant buy, I love those guys. Haven't played it yet but I loved Tempura of the Dead so I reckon I will have a blast with this.
