Raskulls: Mr. Driller + Mario Kart + so much more?
twmac replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Went through the game about a month ago. If you only critical path it, the game is over in about 4 hours, but there is tons to unlock and replay, especially if you have a decent number of friends also playing the game. Tanu is definitely right, I love Mr Driller and a lot of the missions in Raskulls remind me of Mr Driller Land on the GameCube. This and IloMilo are great little winter releases. At 800 I would say that this is a must buy, if it is cheaper still then you would be mad not to. -
Just finished Knight's Contract. I have very mixed feelings on this game. On the one hand I enjoyed it immensely for its take on the 'spam buttons' game style of God of War and Devil May Cry, you don't have a health bar but the woman following you does. I also really liked the weird ultra violent take on Ico gameplay (both characters are strongly dependant on each other). The boss fights are extremely tough and you can just sort of muscle through them or discover the combination of magic that takes them out the quickest. On the other hand I am left scratching my head in regards to who I would recommend this game to. It seems to be aimed at no one, and there are few I can imagine perservering with some of the frustrating elements, including getting used to the very odd game rhythms the title insists on following. Didn't start a new thread because this game falls into the same category as Nier, in that it doesn't need a separate thread for no one to comment on it.

Well it has been a year since we last used this thread but I figured I would revive it for the release of the X360 version. Been playing it and although I have heard a few complaints I think the controls work remarkably well. Gives me hope that there will be a Torchlight 2 on consoles. Also, a friend on AR wrote a piece on palying through Hardcore mode, reminded me of those Farcry 2 'instant death' playthroughs, only it is enforced by the game not the player: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/2011/04/you-have-gained-a-task-adventures-in-torchlights-hardcore-mode-pt-1/

I tell you what we have exhausted: UK:R - the originator of Blue Skies in games. I am just hoping that the end of UK:R is some kind of early April Fools...
-
Why is this thread still alive? This game is the antithesis of everything exciting in video games.

hahah am enjoying Hobo Lobo quite a bit too, cannot afford sponsoring right now or else I would, the art work is lovely. I just a wrote a piece I am particularly happy with, it is a little personal but most people should be able to identify with this: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/2011/03/there-is-no-potter-in-team-ready-to-be-scheduled/

Hmm, yeah they had some stuff about the guardian. I thought it was meant as some fucked up 'oh, all she needs is a man who doesn't want to beat her and rape her so that she can get over her sapphic desires' subtext that made me feel physically ill. So they bring back the guardian... Man, not sure I could handle another film like that.

Just watched 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. Had some nice moments and was generally grttier than a lot of 'whodunits' but otherwise this film was pretty lame and ridiculous. The main fantasy of guy who sticks to his guns-gets-the-girl-and/or-the-status reminded me of the worst moments of Boondock Saints as in it felt like the author was trying to justify his beliefs. The reasoning behind all of the clues was pure drivel that even Agatha Christie would have had a hard time putting into a novel and the ending was one of the worst of I've ever seen, it out and out makes no sense at all. It plays out like the worst of its American peers. No disrespect but it seemed to be that this got a lot more praise because it was Swedish and therefore all the indie scenesters could justify liking this hokum because 'it was foreign'. I also don't know how they managed to spin it out into 2 more sequels as there are literally no plot threads left.

Wow, that sounds like some pretty big complaints. Sorry you are finding the platforming so fiddly, don't really know what to suggest in regards to that. As for the hacky/slashy parts, sounds like you have nailed those now, Darksiders is far from the deepest in that regards. Glad you are managing to find some good in it despite those things.
-
Because PC fans are so fond of highjacking these kind of threads in reverse. Solution: Play it on Console I am sorry, couldn't resist. Are you enjoying Darksiders? I had a hell of a lot of fun with it last year.

Well I was going to call it Operation Thumbpoint: Idle Rising but I am not sure anyone is even interested in this game. Am playing it on the X360 and having a blast, the tension in Co-Op with the 'Any second now and you will die' feel is awesome. Plus, there are moments for emergent gameplay, only in Multiplayer. It is going for about 14 dollars in most retail places so if anyone would be interested in some multiplayer in, say, a couple of weeks when I have internet again. Let me know.

Man, don't rub it in And open up a proper thread/re-ignite the old thread.

toblix Complains About the "Recently completed video games" Thread
twmac replied to toblix's topic in Idle Banter
I agree with both points. I think what people should do is: 1) Search and see if a thread was created for the game, then either a) Update the thread if it was recent Update the thread if it was popular but old c) Make a new thread if it a new game that hasn't got one d) Update the thread if it is related to Earth defence Force-related e) Update the 'recently completed' if it doesn't fit into one of those categories Works for me as I have stopped checking the recently completed thread as frequently as I once did adn also put my comments abotu Bulletstorm in the Bulletstorm thread instead. -
Been playing Bulletstorm and it is a massive disappointment in the single player campaign. I am hoping that the 'Echoes' sections are going to redeem it. The Echoes sections are supposed to be score attacks in the same vein as 'The Club', if they are as good as 'The Club' then I might forgive the poor campaign that, so far, has felt pretty generic (a sci-fi version of Call of Duty) and linear. The combos and skill shots don't feel well implemented and the excuse they give for them existing is just hilarious. It is quite a nice looking game but, in the same way that CoD does it I never feel like I am doing very much in the way of gameplay. Also on X360 the aim assist is verging on abusive to the player.

One of my favourite games on the Xbox, had an absolutely incomprehensible story line with fantastic, offkey music. Fuuck I just want to play some Phantom Crash right now but my saves are on my Xbox in England (have beaten all but the last 4 bosses and unlocked every single track in the game).

Good thing that image isn't moving, not sure it would epileptic-safe. Wow. My eyes hurt looking at it. It is both fascinating and terrifying as I feel my arteries crying out in sympathy pain.
-
Might have something to do with having almost 70, 000 achievement points Tanu. I can't imagine that anyone here is a massive achievement chaser (I was until about 2 years ago) so having a score like that will put you near the top. Hell, I thought my score was half decent and you are 13, 000 clear of me.

The interview was interesting as it felt like you were pushing him in a direction that he wasn't prepared for. It also makes me sad as Red Faction: Guerilla was one of my favourite games of 2009 and this game seems to be moving away from what made it good. Just finished Plants versus Zombies on the X360. Fantastic game, just everything about it is polished to perfection.

I have found a few people on X360, and it is absolutely awesome fun. I will fully concede that it is dumbed down for the Console fans in contrast to the first Operation Flashpoint, but I don't care. The fact that there are divergent paths within a mission, that you don't outright fail for most of the objectives. The freedom to move within a map as you see fit... Man, I am absolutely loving this game. would like to play Arma2, but I don't play PC games, sounds pretty rad though.

If you like RPGs, try out Eternal Sonata.

Hello, have been working on a new website with some people I know: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/ It is mainly about games, sort of, and I am doing a five-part series on films that portray gamers and the gaming culture (started with Scott Pilgrim versus the World). The first couple of weeks should have a fair bit of content so let me know what you guys think. Also, if anyone has some content that they might be interested in contributing let me know.

Just bumping this as a friend posted a really nice first part about video game canon: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/2011/03/on-a-Video game-canon-part-1/ Touches on some stuff that the podcast talked about. Anyways, Snooglebum's criticism was that there wasn't much content, well there is now (it has 100% more Wendell Pierce than last time)!

Listened to the most recent idle thumbs podcast while playing Hydro Thunder: Hurricane. It was brilliant because every time you get boost, you get the announcer going: "You've got Boost!" Or: "Boost is good to go!" Gawd bless ya, I know he is.

Collector's edition of Phantasm? The one that comes in the ball-blade thing? That is awesome.

Would just like to say, apologies for the minor (ill-conceived) rant. The choices we make in life are ones we have to deal with. Yes, it makes sense to lament not being able to play a game, but the comments were heavily negative in a way that made it feel like you were saying the game was shit because it wasn't on your chosen platform. In the classic 'Fox that can't reach the grapes' way (it is a Hans Christian Andersan fable about a fox that tries to reach some grapes but after failing he just assumes they are sour). If this was a misinterpretation of the comments I apologise. Elmuerte, you do realise part of the delay for Psychonauts was to localise all the dialogue? They even hired the woman who does the German version of Bart Simpson to do the comic delivery for Raz's voice. They were trying to make the game a better game for everyone, look where that got them.
