  1. https://storify.com/strictmachine/gameovergate It is amazing how a group of people can get together and be really shitty. The manifesto was pulled out of one of the logs: "-Eliminate piss poor games "journalism" topics ranging from race relations to sex/gender issues. video games are not real life and should not be treated as such. -Eliminate cronyism amongst game developers and journalist. Shit like paid reviews, promotions (mountain dewritos), and the promise of free games for positive press (or a 10/10 score) is dishonest and hurts gamers. Imagine being that kid who read all the fantastic press about superman 64 only to buy and realize the harsh reality. -Hold developers accountable for all types of dishonesty. Bullshots, pre-rendered trailers, running games on different hardware during preview, removing features from the final product and general bait and switch tactics. -Prevent censorship. If your game is fucking shit I will tell you and you will take that criticism like an adult instead of deleting it. Likewise, developers should be allowed to make the games they want without worry of censorship from outside forces. (SJWs) *stretch goal* -Stop corporate greed: yearly sequels with marginal changes, high price DLC for minimal content that should have been in the final product. Paid early access for broken messes of a game. Microtransactions. Paid online "services". -Have fun and enjoy video games." How wrong and conceited can you be?
  2. So, uh, I got really drunk (like didn't know where I was the next day drunk) last night. After sorting myself out I have found the following bits of evidence: - I rented then bought the same film with Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd on Xbox Video - I finally unlocked the 'win 50 games of Last Titan Standing' achievement on Titanfall - Donated 200 dollars to the Pathologic kickstarter... I don't even play PC games.
  3. I came on to this thread to say exactly the same thing. Loved it as always, hopefully one day I can park my arse on a seat and actually be there.
  4. Diablo III

Okay, Dark Souls II falls into the Diablo category, it is safe to say it is beat. Eternal Sonata - there are simply things you cannot do mechanically until the second playthrogh so I am going to stick with 'beat' for that one. Nier, damnit, always Nier that comes back to haunt me. I completely agree with you. But, but, but, given that the storyline is complete and the second play through is clearly defined as playthrough+, would you agree that this works in the same way as Diablo or Dark Souls except that instead of it being narrative exhaustion it is a mechanical exhaustion?
  5. Diablo III

Okay, sorry if the last post of mine was insulting I was not trying to incite elitism accusations. After having read more of your arguments though I now think that your definition of 'beat' is wrong. I can see how you argue your case for Diablo but then this means that Eternal Sonata, Nier, Dark Souls II - none of these can be considered 'beat' until you have done multiple playthroughs (even though you will have seen credits and come to a conclusion) and that is patently you looking for something different in a game. The comparison with DOTA continues not to work because the main mode is the multiplayer - if you wanted to rename campaign 'tutorial' then I would then agree with you but that isn't Blizzard's intent either. To use your analogy - the campaign is not an appetiser - the Adventure mode is the dessert and After Eight mint. The reason for this is all the mechanics will be available to you before then and the enemies and modes are familiar but you get to refine the experience (if you want to). Also - half the game modes - isn't Adventure mode new to Reaper of Souls? Anyway - please don't take this as me trying to be insulting, I am enjoying arguing the definitions of this.
  6. Diablo III

A game with a 20 hour tutorial? Didn't Final Fantasy XIII do that and everyone called it a piece of shit? I am joking of course (apart from FFXIII being shit). I see how you are bending your comparison for it to work. I would argue that I know people that don't consider Plants versus Zombies/Dark Souls a game they play but the game they play that they set themselves new challenges, with updated patches that have introduced new challenges. At the same time there is still a substantial and rewarding campaign you can beat and a satisfying conclusion. Diablo III has a substantial campaign and conclusion that you can beat. DOTA does not have that and does not have that structure.
  7. Diablo III

This is the one I subscribe to: http://www.backloggery.com/games.php?user=twmacb&status=2 "Beaten - The main objective has been accomplished. Usually marked by the defeat of a final boss and/or viewing of credits. You've stormed the castle, rescued the prisoners, and saved the universe from the clutches of an unspeakable evil. Consider yourself a hero! Some games don't have that obvious climax, but you can usually find some goal to reach before it is beaten." You cannot compare Diablo III (a game with a defined 'story' arc) to DOTA (a multiplayer game). That would be like telling me that I haven't 'beaten' Gears of War 3 because I haven't dropped hundreds of hours into all the multiplayer modes and that to say I have beaten GoW with only the single player content would be like saying I had 'beaten' Awesomenauts. Sorry to get tetchy here, because I used to say 'I've completed this game' and people used to arch an eyebrow. On that particular point I conceded because completed is to have exhausted a game of content. So I settled on 'Beat' as a short hand for 'saw to its natural conclusion' in the same way that I feel that I have seen Dark Souls to its natural conclusion. I am not finding another short hand for this Badfinger - I refuse!
  8. Diablo III

I played it on Expert. Mainly with a friend
  9. Diablo III

I think our definitions are different. All five Acts are done, the arc of the 'story' is complete and I have seen the credits - that is beaten. Now if you want to talk about it being completed, I am not even close.
  10. Diablo III

I finished this game (Xbox One version) on the weekend. There is a slow, depressing slip from ‘this is exciting’ to ‘I am doing nothing but holding down a button to see pretty colours’. That takes about 5 hours then there is a grinding, tedious trip to complete the game in another 15 hours. I’ve never been so non-plussed by a title that radiates this much polish. You can see the development budget oozing from every festering pore of the demon spawn you kill but it is ultimately pointless; you press the same three buttons and wait for cool-downs so that you can then press the same three buttons again. It is mindless, repetitive and shocking that the equipment management is the most consistently interesting thing in this botched, pseudo-MMO. All the extra content seems to just be about replaying areas you have already done before but with the added ‘adventure’ of having to kill a certain number of enemies - dialled in doesn’t even start to describe it. The story line is utter bobbins too with a bunch of ridiculously named people going on about nothing you actually care about as they try and trope an already clichéd fantasy world into the ground as you search for endless Mcguffins and rescue another damsel in distress. The Multiplayer makes it so that at least you can laugh at how mind-numbingly rubbish the game is.
  11. Oh dear, I googled Jonathan Mcintosh and this is one of the first things that comes up: http://anongamer.tumblr.com/ I don't recommend reading it but it is a weird collection of bits and bobs that some one has compiled as a way to discredit Sarkeesian and also share a bunch of her personal information and information on her family.
  12. This also reminded me of a separate 'watching a film with a woman friend' I wrote about in relation to Anita Sarkeesian's first video: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/2013/03/damsels-in-distress-my-own-regressive-crap/
  13. Okay - this was the breakdown of the first 26 minutes of me listening to this podcast: - Oh no, please don't go into this there can't be anything to add to this discourse - Shit, nice point - Fuck yeah! - Damint I need to leave work but I really want to see where this is going Really liking it so far and it has been one of the best discussions on this whole nightmare. As for women as background, it reminded me of a discussion I had about 8 years ago. I introduced this girl to Audition with the premise that it was pretty messed up and partly traumatised me. We watched it and I asked her what she thought. She said she liked it but didn't understand what freaked me out so much. I explained the idea [spoilerS for Audition] of a woman flipping on a man, keeping him prisoner then torturing him physically and emotionally was pretty grim [End Spoilers] She replied that I if flipped the genders I have just described about a dozen run-of-the-mill thrillers released in the US. It made me pause and then *mind blown* For all others who rolling their eyes - yes, it should have been a bit more obvious to me.
  14. Each of Ubisoft's main outings since Far Cry 2 have basically been chocolate covered turds. They look apealing, but under the the facade, well they are just shit.
  15. Anyone Remember?

Funny that you mention the vocabulary as I had been going through the old podcasts recently adn completely forgotten that they used the term 'gay' in a derrogatory manner. I think I sent a poorly worded email about it at some point too. To be fair - I wasn't outraged as I am pretty sure I was in the habit of using the same words without really thinking about the wider meaning and connotations. It was just funny how my brain had fully ignored it and that given how my own personal views have changed the word stood out. Also I am definite agreeance that it is great to have Danielle on the show.
  16. Sorry I've been working and sleeping for last 5 days. Well I didn't do the cert testing on the Spongebob videos but the requirements for GBA are actually about three paragraphs long and go pretty much like this: "Make sure the button icons are good and the game better not crash" So certing that would have been a doddle, that and Nintendo would have been utterly bewildered by the things. To add to the WoT criticism - I definitely fall into the camp of "please don't do it for any games, even ones you like". Everything else, even the lootcrate one was fine as it didn't really infringe on your topics of discussion. I also support you guys getting a nappy sponsor.
  17. Awesome, my email actually got read. I wasn't sure whether it was worthy. Tegan - apart from the GBA stuff, I worked on most of those projects.
  18. Ace Team's Abyss Odyssey

You have to check out the Wood Golem as a summon he seems to be the most over powered as you can knock people down then, while they are in the air, you can roll into them for about 5-6 hits. You guys are definitely talking about features that are nto available on X360 and it is definitely making me a little envious. Still, great game anyway.
  19. Movie/TV recommendations

Hahah, yeah I really should have used inverted commas
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

So I went back and re-watched a film known as The Woman in the UK. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714208/?ref_=nm_knf_i1 Deeply disturbing, weird film that I think I really like despite some missteps. Sean Bridger is an acting god for his role as the Patriach in this film
  21. Ace Team's Abyss Odyssey

Another thing - the Wood Golem's rolling attack (down and Special) is utterly devastating. He might be my favourite character now, alongside the Peacock Warrior.
  22. Ace Team's Abyss Odyssey

Hmm, on the X360 version you lose everything when you beat the warlock... Weird. Have now beat it about 5 times - the Ghost Monk is my favourite character. Have you fought the creature that attacks the surface randomly? That is a fun fight.
  23. Walking Dead Season the Second

Scratch that, seems like Xbox Live is just completely fucked . Every time you boot any game it disconnects automatically.
  24. Walking Dead Season the Second

The Xbox 360 version is completely fucked right now. When I boot the game it disconnects from Xbox Live and there is no way for me to download Ep.4 without getting charged for it. I emptied the cache and redownloaded the Title Update but that did nothing.Short of paying for Ep. 4 again I am stuck right now. Also, I went to the tell tale forums looking for a solution/response but instead I got spoilers for Ep. 4 instead. Anyone experiencing this problem and/or have a link to discussion about this that doesn't immediately ruin the episode?
