  1. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

He's in the UK, they get better choices. Wonderful 101 is an option for him. Only one I don't already have that's available in Canada is Wii Party, so I guess I'm going with that. What this means is that my girlfriend convinced me to get Mario Kart this week. She is not a gamer at all, but sent me a text while watching TV one night that just said "Hey, you're going to buy Mario Kart, right? I wanna play Mario Kart." I was honestly on the fence about buying it before the school year was over, but hey: if she wants to play the game with me, I'll buy it a bit earlier than planned.
  2. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

WHY DID I HAVE TO GO ELSEWHERE TO SEE THAT THEY ANNOUNCED A NEW PUSHMO FOR WIIU? You let me down, Thumbs. You let me down hard. That game is the shit, and a new WiiU version is incredible news. Label me stoked as all hell.
  3. PlayStation+

HBOGO is not a thing in Canada, but I've had PS+ for 2 years anyway and it was just kind of a "oh hey, I have a free Resogun" when I got my PS4. It had already given me almost everything that's super essential to play on Vita for free-to-cheap, now it's double awesome to have!
  4. PlayStation+

Man, I'm starting to feel like I'm getting my PS4's worth just from buying the system and having PS+. Sony, congrats on continuing to earn my loyalty as a customer.

    THUMBCON 2015!
  6. The E3 Retrospectapalooza

I'm more immediately excited for Majora's Mask 3D...
  7. Uplay

I really don't get Uplay at all. The two things that I'm playing most right now are ACIV and Rocksmith 2014. Rocksmith is actually pretty good about it. I'm honestly not sure if Uplay is in it at all, but it's so damned obnoxious in AC. I don't understand how these two things could come out a month-ish between each other and have such drastically different implementations of the system.
  8. The E3 Retrospectapalooza

Two of them. Duct taped together.
  9. The E3 Retrospectapalooza

Nintendo declares it "The Year of Sony" by accident, must have an emergency other Nintendo Direct two days later to backpedal.
  10. Feminism

This, although not quite as mild. I spent a good portion of my teen years thinking "What the fuck is wrong with girls? Can't they see how nice I am?" before eventually realizing around age 19 how toxic that was. Oddly, for me one of the biggest pushes to getting over myself was having a friend who believed the same thing just enough more than me to strike me as kinda sketchy. Having a friend standing next to you who is a manifestation of a straw-man of a belief you have is a really good way to shake you from it. That point for me coincided with getting over my "nice guy" shit. Oddly, when I gave up pursuing it all the time, I also stopped doing something that I didn't even realize I was doing. That is, when you're always on the lookout for sex, people have a tendency to have that as an unconscious subtext to pretty much every interaction with people they're attracted to. When I gave up on looking, I dropped that subtext without even realizing that it had existed in the first place. Now I have male friends who think I'm some kind of ridiculous player, when in reality I'm pretty sure it's that I just started thinking of sex as "something fun that people who like each other can do together", in the same category as board games or campfire singalongs, rather than as the goal of a social interaction. From what I've gathered from women I'm friends with, it's pretty much just that it's relaxing to be around a guy who doesn't care if you fuck him or not, so they hang around me. This meant that when I gave up, about three months later I found the partner that I've been with for 7 years, and I have a much more diverse and rewarding circle of friends than I would have otherwise. It's so sad to me the amount of pressure our society puts on sex, because it results in dudes like Rodger and it was exactly my rejection of that which made my life drastically better. And yeah, Argobot, yours shows the other side very well. It feels weird sometimes to be the vocal feminist at a table with four other people when I have the only Y chromosome there, but I find myself having to remind people to think about what they're saying about others a lot. I have seen that there's actually quite a bit of anger there, but it's mostly directed at other women for "making the rest of us look bad." The amount of slut-shaming and other bullshit that is built into women by our society is a huge bummer. Sex: it just isn't that big a deal.

But now BANE has the bubble wrap...

Ok, so Vinny and Alex are forming an Eastern supergroup? That I can definitely get behind, as they are two of my favourite people on the site (reinforced by the last "Bombin' The AM", when I noticed that Alex has a compilation of the best articles from Bitch Magazine on his shelf). But yeah, GB West now makes me feel a little nervous. I actually really love Drew as well, and he does fun stuff. Problem is, his most fun stuff is usually when he and Vinny are playing off each other, so I don't know how he'll do without Vinny's goading to do a stupid thing in the middle of a serious simulation. While I originally signed up for GB because of Brad, he's become more of a downer lately for whatever reason, and Jeff is funny but needs somebody happier to balance him out. Basically, I hope that whoever they hire to fill out West is able to bring that child-like glee that they're losing with Vinny. Fingers crossed.
  13. Life

My girlfriend drinks kombucha daily and really likes it, so I have tried some out of curiosity. To me, it mostly tastes like you're drinking moldy vinegar. People that like it, more power to you. I believe that it is probably decent for your health. I can't even smell it without gagging though, so I'll stick to black coffee in the mornings.
  14. Other podcasts

Vinny is what? Is he still with GB in general? That guy MAKES that site, as far as I'm concerned. He is a master of taking something that has no right to be hilarious and finding all of the perfect fun and silliness in it. He just brings this amazingly infectious lighthearted attitude to everything he does and can make anything fun. I think I need to go check GB and see what the hell happened.

  18. Feminism

I just say "guys" to talk about everybody. I also call my mum and girlfriend "dude" casually though (which has never phased them, but gets weird looks from bystanders), so I'm probably the wrong person to ask.
  19. I am 100% down with Nintendo's marketing becoming a run of dad jokes.
  20. Plug your shit

I have purchased it, but like with the first season, will likely play it over the course of a week. One episode per weekday. That pretty much destroyed me last time, so why not replicate?
  21. Recently completed video games

I played it with a controller and had no trouble at all. Perhaps give it a try?
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

It's snowed here in Calgary every single weekend of May. Yet it was 18 degrees this afternoon. Snowed Saturday, 18 today. Weather in Calgary is super weird. Where are your folks?
  23. General Video Game Deals Thread

I've gone a bit nuts with my spending since getting a career job this year, which has left me with a salary that is 3 times what I was making as a (working full time at shit jobs) student coupled with no longer having to pay tuition. I have tried to spread the love around a bit, dropping money on surprise gifts for friends and family and such, but also felt pretty guilty when I bought a new guitar. I don't know why the guilt, especially as I'm working in a fairly beneficial field to society (I am definitely NOT a slum lord), but it's there, so I'm with you. In terms of the cost of gaming vs other hobbies, it's definitely my most expensive. While I dropped $1000 on a musical instrument, otherwise all I need to spend is like $10 every few months when I need new strings. Reading is, as others have mentioned, pretty cheap. Board games can run a lot, but it's easy to share that cost among a gaming group. Oddly, I feel like most of my board gaming cost comes from the beer that goes along with the sessions, as everyone brings something to contribute to the common pool on our board game nights (and sometimes we'll just straight-up bring our game to a table at a pub). Video games, between buying a new console this year, subscriptions to services, new games, and DLC for things that I play regularly (looking at you, Rocksmith), are probably my biggest money sink. ...and yeah, I buy almost everything on sale. Last thing I bought that was not hugely discounted was InFamous 3, and before that I think it was Saint's Row 4.
