  1. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

When classic LA games got re-released on Steam... no DOTT. Among the announced games for GoG... no DOTT. Fuck. This is the ONLY Lucasarts adventure that I have never owned legally and I'd really like to, but even when re-releases happen I still can't seem to be able to do it. Fingers crossed it's in the unannounced ones.
  2. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yes! This will be happening less than a week after I get my first real paycheque from the new job! I'll be playing D4 in no time!
  3. What are the best GTA clones?

Sleeping Dogs is fantastic. It's a better-written GTA with Batman combat instead of guns. If that doesn't sell you, I can't help any more. I love the Saint's Row series, and the change in character is really obvious from 2 to 3. I actually love both games, like, a lot. How you will feel about them may be indicated by your reaction to this: Saint's Row 3 has a mission in which two characters are driving to a location and a song comes on that they both really like and sing along loudly to. It's highly scripted, unavoidable, and the only time it happens in the game. It's also a great moment and one that a lot of people point to as showing the feel of SR3. It does that in multiple ways though. See, in Saint's Row 2, if you listen to certain radio stations for long enough, the game will recognize that you have favourites. After a set amount of time listening to one station, the game will decide that your character has probably heard it enough times to have internalized some lyrics. Every now and then (not every time) when some songs come on after that point, you can hear the voice actor of your choice quietly singing along to the radio. The SR3 sing-along both shows how lightly they took everything and how much fun they had with the development AND how much more tightly controlled your experience with SR3 is compared to SR2. Both are excellent, but 2 is far better for emergent things and 3 is much more of a roller coaster. SR4 has three different missions in which people sing along to the radio. The take-away? It's still good, but really milking what made 3 great and not doing much new (superpowers are fantastic though). And yeah, Just Cause 2 is one of my favourite games ever. If that's close enough to a GTA clone for you and you've never played it, you need to get on that.
  4. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

As a reason for her being naked a lot, yes. As a reason for her general appearance, no. I guess it depends on what we're trying to justify. Also from Mass Effect, we have Miranda who has been genetically engineered to have a perfect ass (not even kidding). Kojima's got a few of these too, notably Quiet from the upcoming MGS5. At least, he's claiming the backstory will make you empathetic to her appearance. Right now, we don't know exactly how much backstory she's got. I feel like we need some RPG experts to really dig into this. Not because the portrayal is worse in RPGs, but because they try harder to hide it.
  5. A Dota Engagement

Congrats! It's nice to confirm that Dota has an... ENGAGING gameplay loop.
  6. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this, but c'mon guys. It's obviously "Baby Got Backstory".
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

My girlfriend has been after me to see that with her for a couple of weeks now. Gonna go Friday, if all pans out. Excited!
  8. Good News Everyone

Are we posting our kitties? Two months ago my partner and I were talking about adopting a cat. Her brother was with us, and he said that he had a friend who had two cats that she couldn't keep and didn't want to separate as they're sisters that grew up together. This is Daisy and Juniper, our new(ish) kitties: EDIT: I don't know why it keeps switching this sideways whenever I try to attach it. Whatever.
  9. Green Thumbs: Talkin' About Gardening

New, mysterious plant shows up out of nowhere two weeks before Halloween. Yeah, this will end well.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

New plan, everybody chooses six of them and pits them against six that other people have chosen.
  11. Recently completed video games

Yeah, Thousand Year Door is the best Mario RPG by far (and I replayed it in its entirety in 2012, so that is not just nostalgia talking).
  12. THE EVIL WITHIN: Slurms MacKenzie

The widescreen thing is actually the thing I find most appealing about this game. Going back to my projectionist days, I just found horror to be way more effective in the Cinemascope format (a 2.35:1 ratio as opposed to a "Flat" lens, which delivers 1.85:1, or the standard of a widescreen TV). Most of my favourite scary movies have the exact same letterboxing on a normal TV because they're presented in that ratio. As a stylistic choice, I think it's an awesome one and really helps capture what they want to convey. Unfortunately, if what Sno is saying about the bars on the sides is true, it's much less cool. Watching videos, I noticed the subtitles were still appearing in the blacked out lower portion of the screen, so it would appear from that that the game is still running in 1.85 and only showing the 2.35 parts of the screen. Honestly, a proper mod "fix" would be one that retains the 'scope format, moves the subtitles up so that they're still within it, and ACTUALLY cuts off the parts that are blacked out so that it's truly running in 'scope.

If you have a WiiU you should seriously consider Superstar Saga on the GBA virtual console. It's a fantastic game, and while I loved BIS, I think I still prefer the original. The whole series is worth looking at, but 1 and 3 are definitely its peaks.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Just curious because I'm never on twitter: Has anyone started a #NotAllSJWs? If not, I wanna lazyweb that. Somebody start #NotAllSJWs please. As a guy who hasn't tweeted in like 6 months, I am probably not the one to start a new thing.
  15. Oculus rift

Wow, y'all take very meticulous care of your body hair.
  16. Half-Life 3

    Amphibian Arithmetic. Series reboot.
  17. The Black Glove kickstarter

I am completely amazed that they bothered to respond to "PS4 innit". Good work, sir.
  18. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Tron 2.0 was a part of that? Man, I totally love that game. Gotta go buy that bidness.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Ignoring the last page and a half, the following totally just made my night:
  20. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

Decorating the classroom for Halloween. The school spirit committee said we'd get extra credit in the scoring if we had Batman. I made mine interactive.
  21. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

My school has one of those in the library. It's pretty rad.
  22. Intoxicated:

I just had my first beer in two weeks for the same reason! I missed you, tasty tasty hops.
  23. Life

That sounds fucking awesome. The librarian at the school I'm teaching at is secretly kind of doing your job as well. He successfully lobbied over the summer to get a 3D Printer for the school, and on discovering that I am also a tech enthusiast he has been pulling me into the library pretty regularly as I walk past to show me some new cool thing he's working on for the kids to have access to. My own job is going ok. Other teachers I've talked to about the position are surprised that I'm not outraged about the amount of work I'm doing relative to the other teachers on my team (they team-teach on two subjects each, I go to all of the team meetings for both teams and teach everything myself. Whups.), but in fairness this is a result of my class having been added three weeks into the school year and everything having to be scheduled in a weird way to accommodate it. I'm still benefiting from all of their planning, so it's a lot less work than developing everything myself like I did last year. I am a little disappointed by how traditional half of my grade team is though. There is one woman who is pushing hard for more fun inquiry stuff, but two of the people on the team are still very worksheet and drill-focused. Those things have their place, but I feel kinda gross using them and am trying to join the other woman in pushing weird fun stuff. Contract-wise, it's getting sorted. Taking a while, but things will be worked out sooner or later. I was beating myself up real bad all weekend, and barely slept Sunday night because I had no idea what Monday would bring, but things are moving forward. Don't know when I'll get paid, but I am now at least confident that sooner or later I will.
  24. Ferguson

Obviously both sides are biased and telling half truths. He was carrying a weaponized sandwich. ...seriously, what the fuck, world? I am continually baffled by how horrifying this shit is. It never occurred to me that police officers would be allowed to work as security when not on duty. As a teacher, if I offer my services as a tutor, it is grounds for dismissal. That's for helping children. Yet some police officers can say "I NEED THIS POWER TRIP TO CONTINUE INTO MY OFF HOURS AS WELL!" and everyone is cool with it. I want to make it clear that I'm sure there are good police officers who don't use their careers as a power trip, but that the world is such that I need to clarify that at ALL is horrible.
  25. No tropical fruit left behind - Kickstarter

I have pledged. Very into this idea.
