I'd hate to post again, but apparently I'm the first to beat Pier Solar since nobody has mentioned the game in the forum. Pier Solar and The Great Architect was Kickstarted game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and if it's one thing it does well is feel like a game from that era, but it also has a it's flaws. I don't really know what is different but I can assume many of the new options weren't possible in the original system, like autosaving, changing the encounter rate and HD options. I don't really get the HD options, you get HD portraits, HD cutscenes and... HD backgrounds? The rest looks the same, it's so weird I just play in the original look. The encounter rate is a God-send, since you can dial it to zero when you're lost and don't want to fight and crank it up to the max when you want to grind. It also has AI battling, which is.... terrible, the options don't work and the party would use incredibly valuable items on common enemies. Speaking of the enemies, the variety isn't that great and the game has flying enemies which can only be hit by ranged weapons... which are only owned by two of the five party members, the others can't even touch them unless they use spells. Which brings me to spell system, you have a change system and can only use certain spells at certain charge levels, so you have to waste turns with charging. It's got quite a few flaws, but... I still enjoyed it. I wouldn't get it full price?
  2. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Since I don't know the JRPGs you've played, I wouldn't know, but it's likely to be the plot difference and lack of characters? Did you play JRPGs with whiny/emo jerks?
  3. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I don't see why they wouldn't be considered JRPGs, it's exactly like one in every single way. Many of them had monster taming even before Pokémon existed.

This thread is bad to the bone now!
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That's one of those terms I never know if it's being pejorative or not and it's not as clear as when people use "SJW" as an insult.

I've beaten a few games: Another Perspective: This game tries so hard to be Braid and think it's so deep, but it's a so-so platform game that's not very special. Girl Fight: I got this on a PSN sale, only knowing it looked stupid and terrible.... I was right! This game is literally a Dead or Alive clone, practically every character is an analog of the DoA universe, the final boss is even a metallic like like DoA 4 and I'm pretty sure some of the moves are from DoA even. The characters are shamelessly objects of desire since they have little to none backstory or reasons to do anything. There is these evil Foundation who for some reason is doing VR training with these girls, the game never explains WHY the bad guys do this, except that the final boss is an AI that is trying to find the one worthy of her help. Before each battle the AI, which happens to be the only voice in the game, give you hints and the backstory of the character, but you will never find out more. The game has unlockable extras and... they just don't tell you, they will tell you other things, but never what you want to know. It gets better, every character has the same ending, when you beat "Chrome" the AI, you wake up in the real world and open your eyes... that's it. The only thing I found out after beating the AI takes you over when you wake up and... nothing else. It's hilarious how much of the little story there is is missing! Also, the ragdolling at the end of the round is glorious! I also beat Mystik Belle, a "Dizzyvania", which is like a Metroidvania with heavy adventure elements and a limited inventory. The plot is simple, collect three ingredients for a witches brew, as you advance and defeat bosses, you'll get new powers to access new areas. The limited inventory isn't much of a hassle if you just drop items near a warp gate, and you can figure out what to do by speaking to the few people that are around the castle. Many will even give you a clue if you just show them random items. I didn't get stuck a few times, once because I didn't know a certain item could be examined after it's use and another because I had forgotten Belle had heavily hinted to explore an shelf later. It might be a bit hard if you didn't expect adventure puzzles in your "Vania", but I think the game flowed pretty well and puzzles seemed pretty straight-forward if you know your adventure games.

Isn't that more or less what Simon Pegg said about nerd culture in general? I really don't get it, isn't the point of a hobby and entertainment in general "escaping from the harsh world"? When a normal guy vegetates on the sofa watching TV he's just relaxing, but if you're a nerd... Oh, no! He's running away from reality! SHUN HIM! This is so dumb, this whole "escaping from reality", "infantilization" and such. What ISN'T "escaping reality"? All hobbies and ways to pass the time are "escaping from reality"! Reading books, drinking, sports, EVERYTHING. Everybody talks about escaping reality and such, but they never say what facing reality is. Is it being informed? Being mature? Socializing with real people? Going outside? Nobody says it, but guess what, you can do ALL of these and still come home to watch an anime cat maid waifu show.

I'm not sure I'd call it a small thing, isn't it rare to see a subculture actively protesting in public instead of with just hashtags and reblogs?
  9. Job Hunting

Come to the think of the last job I got was a temp one, so it's a start at least.
  10. True Pigeon Love: Hatoful Boyfriend

I remember when the Idle Thumbs podcast said they would play it and talk about it the next week.... they never did. Okosan is the obvious choice, for true love and pudding! I wonder how many people just played it once and never got the true ending? I'm not sure, but I think it's almost a staple for VNs with multiple endings to have one that only unlocks if you've seen all the others.
  11. Idle Workouts

I wasn't asking about a supplement for yoga, I'm basically starting and was wondering if I should eventually look for more intense yoga workouts eventually. I just started so I'm kinda at a loss.
  12. Job Hunting

With my parents store closed due to retirement, I'm doing a lot of job hunting now. Before you ask, I couldn't have continued with the store, it's was a grueling task with diminishing returns, my parents were practically losing money before they retired. Frankly, I've always been job hunting, but I can't even remember the last time I even made it to the selection process... one year ago? Maybe more? I've been working as a butcher's assistant half my life and I don't even qualify for other butcher jobs, which is fine with me since I kinda hate that industry now, but it's still the only place I have any experience in. I'm kinda stumped, I'm willing to work at almost anything, except those call centers where you try to force your products onto others, which is 50% of the jobs listings now, not only do I find these jobs almost scams, I'm too socially awkward for them anyway. How does one ever get a job if you're willing to start from the bottom? And I do mean literal bottom, as in janitors, sewer workers, factory jobs, the kind of jobs most people would rather die before taking. All I see is job listings I'm under-qualified for, I've sent my CV to stores and malls and so far I've only gotten one email saying they don't have job offers. While I'm not as desperate to start looking up human guinea pig jobs, I am rather frustrated that I'm having trouble finding places I can even send my CV to.
  13. Idle Workouts

Since I'm too shy to go to the gym (and probably all outdoor activities), I've been trying yoga for ages, but recently I found a cheap and effective yoga training.... I just searched "Yoga for Dummies" in YouTube and the very first video is actually... pretty good and helpful? It's been barely over a week and I'm already sleeping better, with less restlessness and twirling around and no longer waking up with back pain. Of course, now I kinda have no idea of what's the next step, do I keep doing this yoga thing daily? Do I have to switch workouts? I have no idea.

I just completed Xeodrifter, a short, but great "vania" game, it's kinda challenging since you only get a checkpoint right before the boss, at the same time, this is best time for a checkpoint and they even have enemies that give health here. You can't get your health back until you reach the boss so it evens out?
  15. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I just quit Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, almost for the same reason I quit Gabriel Knight, I just couldn't stand the character anymore. The comedy feels like something out of dumb teen comedy, even worse, something from one of "those" parody movies, every item is named after a lame sexual pun... and I LIKE puns. Also, the Angry Broads things just made me quit in shame.... *sigh* I also technically quit Mamorukun's Curse because after beating the final boss I found out I'll have to play the game again and again until I meet some stupid conditions.

Please tell me this a real thing:
  17. I have a PS2 related dilemma.

I was fortunate enough to actually find some good PS2 games in a used games store, (Metal Arms for example), but when I tried them at home, I found out my PS2 no longer reads discs. The two repair stores I called told me that the lens is impossible to replace, so it looks like repairing it is out of the question. I could get a used one, but the big question is... is it worth it? Looking at my collection, only a few of them have not been re-released as an HD-remake, PSP or Vita port. I don't see me playing the PS2 version of Ratchet & Clank when I have the HD versions, but I don't see me parting with games like Michigan: A Report from Hell or Gregory Horror Show. By the way, I tried DEFINITELY NOT emulation and... it looked and sounded messy. I could just get rid of the PS2 games I no longer need and in the same store get a used PS2?
  18. Foggy Memories - A Silent Hill Thread

I.... liked the HD versions of Silent Hill 2 & 3, I never saw the horrible things people said about it, so I guess they patched it out eventually?

I just beat Cho Dengeki Striker, another "censored/all ages" visual novel and frankly, I have mostly the same things as the last one I played, the story was so good I'm glad they took out what looked like a forced sex scene. In this case you can clearly see where the sex was supposed to be because more than removing the sex scene, they skipped it, but they didn't take out the parts where they said they would do it. As as with all good visual novels, you can't really say much without spoiling it completely, all I can say is that's it's about a boy wishing about becoming a super hero... I do have to say this this the "all ages" name is total B.S., the violence and blood was still there, there is a scene that's practically gory and yet it's still the "All Ages" version. I still have another visual novel of this style, which I'm kind putting off because I just know I'm going to burst into tears playing it...
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It really sucks that she didn't ask permission until after it was so big you'd look bad if you said no, but isn't saying she's pedestalling them a bit much?
  21. PS Vita

Unfortunately, I haven't tried the one Hatsune Miku I have yet, I not a rhythm game expert, but I can try it out if you want to know more about it?
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I really hope you're right about them not playing it straight.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, I didn't mean to offend Japanese culture at all, but has anybody here about Japan's "Christmas Cake Syndrome", a very real thing?
  24. PS Vita

You could just buy a cheap PSP or PSPGo if that's all you want. Well, if those are you favorite genres, you kinda lucked out with the Vita. I think I already mentioned all the VNs on VITA and PSP, it whould be getting Steins;Gate and Hatoful Boyfriend soon? Sorcery Saga is a roguelike dungeon crawler that I enjoy, I'm not sure if the Vita has anymore that aren't on Steam. You can play almost every Final Fantasy game on the Vita, many were released on PSP and now FF X is HD on Vita? I really enjoyed the older FF I-VI games. I'd recommend the Y's series that's on Vita and PSP if you haven't gotten them on Steam yet. The original Y's game is a bit hard to swallow though. Oh, the Vita has the Hastune Miku games and the upcoming Persona dancing game since you like rhythm games. The PSP has a ton of retro collections and I think the Vita has many of the modern PS3 ones (Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Racoon and Metal Gear). The PSone Classics are playable on PS3 too, but they look better on a Vita too me.

I just beat Kirby's Dream Course, which I guess is a golf game, right? Yes, it was on VC and I had save states, but I still can't believe some of the moves I pulled... As you apply Kirby's powers to the field you can make the most crazy combos and get a hole in one by just using the powers right. Also, there is a final boss, Mecha Dedede, because Kirby? Anyway, it was a BLAST! I also played One Way Heroics, a rogue-like were you must keep moving left to outrun and evil force consuming the land while you fight enemies, level up and hope you survive enough to fight the Evil Lord behind all of this. I... beat it relatively easy? Sure I had killed an endangered species and the forest rangers attacked me on sight, but... I beat only after a few tries and then I beat it with a different class almost as easily. Maybe I was lucky? *shrugs*
