Idle Thumbs 207: Buble Bloodborne Bloodbeef
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
http://old.idlethumbs.net/about/staff.php Well it's not like he never was. He's on that page... as Godzilla. -
How long did it take you to get full time? Was it a temp to hire position when you started it?
-
Sorry, yeah I mean there's some annoying people and a lot of repetition by a few staff members that seem to forget what they have said previous, but the Simpsons commentaries tend to be pretty above average. You could also just pick out your favorite episodes. Really what they suffer from is the decision to have commentary for every single episode and therefore end up with a lot of time to fill. Most shows have selected episodes, which probably would have been the better route for them.

Is it one of the show runners? Possibly David Mirkin? He was super obnoxious. I liked listening ot Al Jean in the earlier seasons but there was multiple episodes where he'd ask the animators how they got that lighting effect for neon signs and such. Not sure why he kept forgetting.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 26: On The Wings Of Love
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
That Gordon Cole and Shelley stuff was weird, but it pretty much highlights how Madchen Amick may be the best actor on the show. I don't know, but I always like when she shows up, seems way more professional. Plus she's extremely pretty, so I guess there's that. I don't think I've seen her in anything important or worthwhile over the decades since. Seems like she's just been in a bunch of sleazy movies or guest parts on shows. Seems like a lot of wasted potential, but I don't know maybe a lot of directors have simply passed on her auditions for "better" movies or TV. -
I've been slowly going through Season 9 the last few months and listening to the commentary. I think this is the last one for me. One thing that really sucks about all of these DVD sets is Matt Groening sure loves telling the same stories 10-20 times about various origins of The Simpsons. I'm not even joking with that number range. I think that's it for me though. I can definitely see where the stories got really bland and out of hand on various parts of Season 8 and definitely 9 here. I haven't seen a couple of these as a kid actually so I must have dropped off somewhere in Season 10 after intermittently watching Season 9. Apparently Brad Bird stopped animating/consulting/boarding about four episodes into Season 9 and left to do Iron Giant, but honestly besides the camera angles he pushed, I haven't really seen the touches of great animation since season 6 it feels. It's all been pretty stiff except for a few choice parts. I guess I will end up getting the blu-ray for Season 16 just because of the Ricky Gervais episode and the commentary/extras that go with it, but I doubt I will like any of the season, all of which I have never laid eyes on before. One thing I'm thinking is maybe I should give Wreck-It-Ralph a shot despite how much the premise and art direction makes me cringe. I've really enjoyed listening to Jim Reardon talk about all of the episodes he has directed and he seems like a pretty cool animator, having previous worked under John K. as well. He's credited for story and storyboards for Wreck-It-Ralph. Also the last episode I watched was that Lord of the Flies one. God that was dumb, far fetched, and not funny. It should theoretically be a classic since it's a John Schwartzwelder script but maybe it's just bad execution with ugly backgrounds.

Idle Thumbs 207: Buble Bloodborne Bloodbeef
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Hey I just realized that this podcast has five people on it at once doesn't it? I remember someone saying on one episode that going over three hosts kind of creates too much chaos and is not very listenable, but I think this kind of formation worked really well. I didn't notice anyone overpowering anyone and everyone got their say here and there. Very enjoyable. I hope you guys keep going with 4-5 hosts. Definitely I can see where it turns into a mess with other podcasts, but this was great. -

Haha, you should get them Kirby's Dreamland 3 for some fun co-op, even if the 2player character feels vaguely racist.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 24: The Condemned Woman

The bad 3D in that doorknob part made getting this far almost worth it. Wonderful. -
THAT IS THE WRONG ASPECT RATIO!

My boss scheduled me 32 hours on my last week of Starbucks this week. Asshole. Part of why I am quitting is because he never once put me within the hours he sweet talked me as being "just fine" in the interview six months ago. I ask for 20-24, I get 32, I ask to go down to 18-20, I get 24-26. This job has just been wrecking my life and it was only supposed to be some kind of stable part time job for base pay, not something to interfere with contract work that pays much better and all of the time I need for school. So I put in my two weeks recently after the boss decided it was okay to schedule the next week on the Saturday before, putting me into awkward situations with this new advertising place that is contracting me for multiple animation jobs where I could not tell them anything about my schedule for the next week. Plus I was sort of having a breakdown in the meantime because I have not been properly sleeping for this year most of the time. I have to wake up to make the coffees at some time between 4-6 am at least three days of the week and then come home, sleep, wake up, spend time with my wife, go back to sleep at 1 am or so and wake up early again. By splitting my sleep schedules over and over I was just screwing up all of the days when I did not have to wake up at ungodly hours and then sleep way too much or just feel tired and listless. The work is not that bad but the location is stupidly busy and there's a gross amount of stress involved that is hard to wind down after juggling so many customers. I guess since I hated it so much and this other company is currently paying me I figured I could just go ahead and quit for now, complete a couple of projects, and then look for another part time job, maybe one I could throw out a 16-18 hour number (I have more classes than ever coming up second semester of this year) and they would accept. Thing is, my experience with these low paying jobs is they always lie about the hours that are okay in the interview, so I feel lost on trying to find a minimum wage job that would be cool with under 20 hours and pay me stably per week (and also work with a school schedule that changes every semester). I'm now just stressing that I will find some good leads soon on jobs that will work with exactly what I need. Favor, the delivery service, seems perfect, but they won't hire me because I don't have an iPhone and T-Mobile is my carrier. I don't know why those are bad things, since they have an Android app, but okay. On the other hand this advertising company I started with two weeks ago might keep sending me work throughout the oncoming months so maybe I can just focus on school and not get a part time job for the remainder. I only need 38 hours from them a month to equal 96 hours of Starbucks pay. I might have some options over the summer at this game camp because last year I helped a few weeks at it and just kind of led kids around to the bathroom or vending machines and helped them use Photoshop/Construct 2. I'm not the best with kids though. Also Linklater's rotoscope guy said he'd give me run off work for his current rotoscope project in May, but I and pretty much going to say promise of later work is always a no in my experience. Blegh, I wish I could just feel like my life was stable again, after all of these years.

I guess? This is based on me comparing multiple projects I take to and from work and home, school and home, depending on the situation. I have no idea what you are comparing, but in general you save good money if you build your own desktop smartly as opposed to a hardware equivalent prebuilt Windows machine and mac. In no way is paying for a Mac ever going to be cheaper in terms of hardware.

No, I know it was intentional (as in they intentionally did not make a decision) because I had to look up later what was going on with the time period and they purposefully made it non specific. I suppose that's fine except the movie had multiple scenes where the technology was the centerpiece, becoming incredibly distracting in the process. If visuals and set dressing are something you look for in movies, then in many ways they failed to create a world for me because of this. So we have two major scenes with an e-reader, multiple old TVs with wood paneling, a scene where an old TV is sitting on top of larger old TV while the teens are watching it, a scene with a cell phone, a scene with an old corded landline, multiple older model cars besides a few background past decade ones that I initially chalked up to budget, and a climax involving a bunch of of 70s-80s appliances lined up around a swimming pool. But really the TVs were the main distraction. They seem to have found a nice stockpile of a variety of old models and stuck them in almost every room available in every house. I was constantly trying to see if the film wanted to say something about TV or the old movies they were all showing or if it was supposed to be showing some kind of extravagant life in the 80s. Certainly having that many TVs decades ago wasn't cheap. Anyway I still enjoyed It Follows a lot, just the time period was a major distraction for me. Should have just set it in the 70s or 80s and I think it would have been fine.

Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
syntheticgerbil replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I was looking for that. I think Stevan used to have it on his website, but not anymore. -
Pretty much you're going to be spending a stupid amount of money to get a mac that handles stuff like After Effects as quickly as just building your own Windows for a third of the cost. I'd probably be fine with Macs if it weren't for the price. I tend to have used them in my mains in a few work/school environments, but never at home on my own dime.

I think my favorite part was the soundtrack. I was super annoyed by their inability to pick a time period.

Hey now Danger Girl is not a superhero, she is just the sexiest spy at the bureau (CIA?(Spycorp?)).

Those three artists are boring as fuck and always have been, plus Liefeld can hardly draw. They are just defending the boys club. Joyce Chin makes the same money on the same low hanging fruit. Meh, I'm bored.

Andie does this incredibly obnoxious whiny valley girl shtick that I guess she thinks is hilarious and then casually talks about what she talks about in therapy and Travis has confirmed his role as the most boring brother with not having much momentum to carry the show beyond Andie's much stronger personality. I wanted to give it a shot because Travis is fine in everything else but I guess it's because he's always the straight man, which I suppose he still is here, but it's otherwise being carried by Andie, who I don't like at all. The episode where Sydnee appeared to talk about diseases and the plague seemed like she was trying really hard to be nice about the dumb questions. And you're right, it's also a podcast with definite limitations in terms of subject and I already sort of feel like they are scraping since there's only so many times where the hosts can tell me how good they would be at using a particular tool or skill with no one around.

Ooo, well I have seen Little Witch Tyme twice! -
Okay I am done with Bunker Buddies. This is some kind of braggy apocalypse show yet no one on the fucking thing can properly say "nuclear." (Apologies for not being able to find the clip from the earlier Simpsons episode that did this much better.)

I may listen to this but I will probably not understand anything of the shows you guys are talking about.
