The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?
syntheticgerbil replied to Reyturner's topic in Video Gaming
One thing that sucks is now that the series is pretty much over after this game, I'm left with the bad tone shift from MGS3 to 4 and 5. I feel like Peacewalker was very kin to MGS3 I'm also kind of sad there was never a game starring either Meryl or Liquid Snake. The latter was probably unrealistic, but I thought for the longest time a Meryl game had to come out though. Liquid Snake just makes me laugh. His portrayal as Cam Clarke is just hilarious and campy. I love it. I need to go back and watch the digital graphic novel stuff with the Legacy collection because they finally released a version with full English voice acting as opposed to the silence of the original PSP release.- 198 replies

What is ThatGameCompany working on? Perhaps Sony could just hand them all the assets from Last Guardian like Gearbox and Duke Nukem Forever. Probably not though, but I can dream.

Only if they think it's perfect or the bee's knees.

Extra content would be the videos on the HD disc, which is why it's billed that way on the box. The rest is in the game, part of the game design. Why would they figure out numbers for the time attacks and implement them to unlock the weapons if that were truly extra? Since there's no case where there's bad commentary that has ruined a movie for me, that really doesn't make any sense. But you didn't 100% a perfect game so I don't see why I should take you seriously.

I don't think I have much more to say. Everything else was fine. I'm usually very forgiving of games that have gameplay ticks among otherwise amazing atmosphere, art direction, and story, but this one was particularly messy. Also the 100%ing is important. If it's a great game, then all design elements should be taken into account as part of the game. Otherwise why would they be there if not to be completed? It's the reason I made sure you got all masks in Majora's Mask, Twig, since that is a game where 100%ing is actually rewarding and illuminates some of the best parts of the design. You rescue all the slaves in an Oddworld because those are the meatiest puzzles. You get all of the pearls and photos in Beyond Good and Evil to see every nook and cranny (Christ that game is smooth). Oh wait one more: I'm very grateful they didn't allow you to constantly ride your horse off a cliff, since it seems like that would be good design in Ueda's eyes.

It's part of the design. That is what the designer created to be completed. There are ten exclusive items tied to those time attacks. It's too bad R1 really doesn't work that well since the game can't often figure out which direction the gravity is pulling from despite it being about a game where you hold on to stuff in all directions in mid air. If you can't love the game warts and all, then it's not a perfect game. It would be like being in a relationship with someone that is great but they also like to pour rubbing alcohol into the eyes of children as a hobby. How are you just gonna ignore that? There's also that secret fruit garden on the top of that tower tied to getting your stamina from beating the game nearly four times. Luckily in the PS2 version everyone could just glitch and skip that poorly thought out tedium. Too bad almost no one playing the HD collection will ever see it because it's patched. Also that one fucking boss where you fall into the water and have to swim back. Fall again, swim back. Please spend 3 minutes holding the analog stick up for failing.

I hope all of you that think Shadow of the Colossus is near perfect finished the time attacks on both hard and easy, which unlocks all the extra stuff, which means 100%ing it. I mean you should 100% an amazing game right? And now I'm getting nightmares of shooting a bunch of hard to see fruits from random trees for hours and swiping your sword at lizards trying hard to get past the terrible collision detection with those things. Even worse are all the copy and pasted save temples where you use your broken momentum to climb up and try to catch that lizard that is not scripted to come to the ground. Yesh. If Shadow of the Colossus did not have such a bland overworld, all that incredible amount of tedium, and controlled like Prince of Persia Sands of Time instead of an improved version of Croc, then it might be a contender for one of the best games ever, but for all the hype it gets for a must play game especially among people new to video games, there's no way in hell I'd recommend it.

Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I was kidding, he never said woof. I can't actually imagine him saying woof. Poor Ira, locked away in Buzz's chest of bad stuff. -
Yeah coming from famed Last Guardian fan site, the Guardian. Keep dreaming fan boys.

Why pay them so low?

Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Haha, yeah and there was that sly My Girl reference recently as well. Although, despite wishing I was Kevin McAllister for a tiny sliver of my childhood, I did not get that everyone saying "woof!" over everything was a Home Alone reference either. I guess it doesn't matter now since every podcast on the planet has moved past woofing responses, except for fucking Ira Glass. -
Is she an expert?! I've seen every episode of the Sarah Silverman Program and there's a lot (A LOT) of fucked up shit going on in that show that sort of bugged me on many levels. Although maybe more than anything just bothered that the poop jokes weren't all that interesting 80% of the time. Watched it for the Rob Schrab directed episodes, not the biggest fan otherwise.

Well, where can I get a prescription then?

I explicitly remember my dad getting angry that I was watching a movie with such language.

Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast
syntheticgerbil replied to Gormongous's topic in Movies & Television
Yeah I suppose I was wondering if it were something a little bit less obvious, a strange abbreviation like OVA, since it seems to exclusively Japanese productions that credit animators as "ED director" and such. Can't seem to find anything that says otherwise though. -

Haha, is that the original song?! Also what does OP and ED stand for? I know they are the opening titles and ending titles and that they often can have separate directors from the show itself, but are they just abbreviations of "opening" and "ending" or something else entirely? Okay so here's the other part of that Baki the Grappler story: It's my "tough guy" friend Jesus, who once called me gay for ordering a strawberry soda because apparently in Mexico they don't drink those there without a stigma(???). Yet later I see him watching this anime with glistening bulging muscles right at this super awkward locker room scene and he says it's pretty bad ass with a straight face. Totally doesn't get what I'm laughing at. -

Haha, maybe another time then? I looked up some drawings just to refresh my memory and the renderings of the muscles are almost painful. Plus that baby face Baki perpetually has. I assume that the redhead is Baki anyway. Amazing. -

My only experience with Baki is my friend was watching it on a school computer a few years ago and it was two dudes checking eachother out in the locker room. Then the muscle drawings got a little out of control. He was all for it though. I was sort of hoping you guys would make fun of Baki for a while. -
Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
syntheticgerbil replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
Is there a super secret way I could get my hands on a cheap 128 GB SSD for about $30? I so far have found $45 before tax, but I think maybe I can snag a better price. It can be pretty bad quality as long as it just works for some period of time. -
Oh god, itsamoose, that's everything I feel like is going on with none of my inability to form coherent thoughts into words. Thank you.

Of course, Twig, no one thinks anyone is immune to criticism but we have to use these strawman arguments to show that some here are more self righteous than others? No one here also says nothing should change. I don't know what forums some of you guys think you are in. Some people just aren't going to agree with you and you don't have to demonize them. Ergh, I give up, carry on. It's such a chore to even talk here anymore. Maybe one day I can be as cool as you Bjorn. Maybe.

I saw one which I linked to and yelled about on these forums. Sure it wasn't just me? On a side note, while I liked the diversity in Wind Waker, why does Tetra turn white when she becomes Zelda? That really pisses me off.

Yeah this is basically how I feel. It's pretty ridiculous to get upset about something like this that it doesn't feel like it features enough "people of color" (I hate that term, sounds so condescending) to a (mostly) a bunch of complaining white males. And the way I think of this is to consider the movie Akira. Akira is completely fictional and there is hardly anything based on reality in that movie. However it is a tale that is about Japan, World War II, and takes place exclusively in Tokyo. The whole cast is Japanese except for one black person (who is last seen being hit in the face (although his role is greatly expanded in the comic and is an ally, he's still the single one)). Katsuhiro Otomo found it important to depict solely Japanese people in a variety of his works as usually anime tends to portray white people with a bunch of multicolored hair. To get upset at Akira would be missing the point concerning its roots. And then on the other hand some things don't get enough criticism. Universally loved indie movie Boyhood failed to represent any Mexicans or black people in Texas despite it taking place in multiple major cities. There was one gardener of hispanic descent and that's it. A fucking gardener. Obviously Richard Linklater has never seen the rest of Texas since he spent his whole sheltered life in shiny white Austin, but growing up in Houston (where whites are no longer the majority) I was never in a place where people were completely white. My elementary school was bilingual just because that's how it was districted. The majority of people I went to my college there were not white. Of all of my friends I go to visit, only one is white (not counting my family). So concerning that shit, it pisses me off. Linklater was trying to represent some kind of real tale of a Texas kid in the suburbs but that is pretty much impossible to do without bringing race into it as some sort of element. I guess in Austin, sure, but the kid didn't only live in Austin. Just I completely understand what you are saying Gaizokubanou. It is not that easy to just draw a line in the sand and demand a quota from a story. It always depends.

Batman's in the kitchen. Robin's in the hall. Jokers in the bathroom peeing on the wall. Classic.

Freelancing Thumbs - We write right, alright?
syntheticgerbil replied to natellite's topic in Idle Banter
I made about 30 short videos of jewelry moving around for front displays at Bailey, Banks, and Biddle, a jewelry chain I didn't know existed. If you see rings moving around on an LCD screen in a mall in front of that store, I moved them somewhat nicely. It's all really unimpressive actually. One of the videos is an ad for buying loose diamonds, which according to Mission Impossible 4 is what criminals deal in. My wife thought it would be cool if I made a version with some gangsta rap. I chose this one: Sorry that this isn't about writing.
