You're not supposed to look them up for real in the recently met players Osmosisch, you are killing all of the magic! Well, unless you thanked each other in the snow.

That seems like a responsible way to manage money.

How did this happen?

Oh now I get it, yeah, I wonder why Don Copal never actually has a real time model? He peaks his head out of the office at some point as well and that's about it. Guess they didn't have a higher res source for his video playback. Strangely, I felt there would be more clashing with realtime characters in 1080p over 640x480 rendered backgrounds but I think it mostly looked fine. Maybe it's because they did some upscaling and the backgrounds didn't have a bunch of aliasing to begin with? Also the game never looked as terrible as "original" mode on my PC back then because my 3D card (and I think many?) had anti aliasing to prevent most of that jagginess. I feel like Double Fine forced the worst settings on original mode in order to make the comparison more noticeable. Are there a lot of people playing it on PS4? I might buy it again, but I had such a good time with my random companions last time that I would be sad if they kept disappearing on me.

Idle Thumbs 219: Idiots Laughing
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
A friend and I threw a copy of Skifree in the personal folder of the each of the current animation students' shared drive when I was at Art Institute. I don't think whoever set that up knew you could access everyone's files by typing in the folder a certain way in windows explorer, because accessing it by clicking gave a restricted message. I can't think of any time in middle school or high school where we had free access to a computer long enough to play any random games that we would install. In high school my class periods were like 50 minutes or some way too short bullshit and doing anything like that was near impossible. -
What cutscenes are you referring to? None of the cutscenes have the updated texture resolutions or lighting of the main game, they are supposedly just reencoded (and not even rerendered if I am udnerstanding right) to have as little compression as possible.

CEO at this dumb company I worked at years ago was at some kind of shitty lunch gathering with his employees and a programmer was talking about how he admitted to his roommate he was wrong about something. Greasy haired CEO's response was something along the lines of, "Why would you ever admit you are wrong? That's showing weakness."

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Considering lots of people like the end of Enslaved (myself included), I really don't think it'd make a good textbook example. Also the Lead Writer was Alex Garland, for whatever that is worth.

Was it because he mentioned his game in the Polygon comments of the previous article the linked to (plus his tumblr of course) or was he promoting his game within the Kickstarter or forums? I seem to have missed something. I suppose the complaint with the FTC would do it but that's not what Cloud Imperium cites a a reason for refund. Seems like multiple people could make that complaint if it made any different in the case of Derek Smart.

Hm, when I was desperate for money, I tried Uber, but they wanted a newer phone than I had and a car that was 2005 and up. Seemed like you already have to be made of some money to get started and then going by what you guys are saying, the pay seems very unreliable. Also they fucking spam Craigslist with 10 ads a day saying you'll make $1500 a week. Besides that that is obnoxious and spammy and they should be banned, there's no way that is real. So just because of that, Uber can get fucked.
-
And so it starts. Well maybe it does, since it involves Derek Smart I would guess they just wanted him to shut up so they refunded him. However I read some of his comments on Polygon and they seem uncharacteristically sober for that guy.

I don't know why the fuck I didn't post this way earlier but I am going to make a plug for my good friend who I used to work with at a video game company. She recently made a male to female gender transition and a lot was realizing her feelings brought on by starting the Gender Portraits project through Kickstarter last year. I recently went to her big art show and it was amazing seeing all of these great paintings in one place, each with a story about the person depicted and their struggles with gender. http://www.genderportraits.com/ So a lot here might really like this. Maybe buy a print or two.

He wasted a ton of money on a huge tour bus and pointless Youtube videos that his company could have used to stay in business.

If going by Animal Parade at all, which my wife played for almost half a year, you spend a lot of time in most of your days socializing and doing a billion random things compared to the older more simple games in the series. They are so iterative and chock full of things. She hasn't gotten to story of seasons yet, she was spending a lot of time on A New Beginning until Fantasy Life took over her real life.

Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita
syntheticgerbil replied to Thrik's topic in Video Gaming
Actually the remaster sounds exactly the same as the problems you were having on Residual. Is it using any aspects of the Residual VM? I can't seem to find an answer. I guess I can't for the life of me remember if playing it from the original CDs with the patch had these graphical errors or not. Perhaps I just didn't notice back then because I had very little understand of how 3D graphics worked. -
Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita
syntheticgerbil replied to Thrik's topic in Video Gaming
I think I may have remembered some glitches where the animation would pop to the next pose midway but I don't know why the occurance seems to have increased here. I definitely don't remember characters suddenly going into T-pose for an instant. It looks really janky. I also wonder if the game being increased to 60fps (it is increased from 30 right? I am not actually sure) has something to do with some of these popping up. I seem to remember the spiral the bone makes in the dam when it hits the tar because of whatever animation bug, but here it looks terrible. I did laugh when Manny gets in the booth with Chowchilla Charlie while he has a cigarette in his hand and it bends backwards. I vaguely remember triggering that long ago. Just kind of annoyed that this seems to have been released without the substantial amount of polish a remaster should in theory have. Also speaking of the Petrified Forest area, I am more annoyed than ever about the sign puzzle. I hated it before since it's just placing it on a spot on the map but it seems even more silly now that I realize the only reason to solve it is to get the key from the sign ahead of the path. Really should have just been the puzzle where Glottis upgrades the shocks on the Bone Wagon alone and you go straight to the damn. And god, I was laughing out loud making Glottis spin on top of that tree again. I forgot how hilarious that was. "Maaaannny, yoooooou promissssssed!" -
The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?
syntheticgerbil replied to Reyturner's topic in Video Gaming
Well there's actually an auto aim button now that I think about that you could toggle, but it didn't do headshots so I never used it. It's maybe a little bit subtle the the snapping is certainly there and I think it's either said in codec or the manual that using it more levels it up. At the very least using a weapon more makes it shake less. But if you notice, it always does those four white dots when aiming at a head, the higher the rank (separate of level), the closer they go together. When you aim towards a head the white dots take a second or so to converge closer together and you have then "snapped" to the head shot. If you nudge the camera left or right in the wrong way, the snapping will push it back correctly. It's definitely a thing Peacewalker added so you aren't sitting there lining up headshots in a painfully slow manner on a handheld, probably learning yet another mistake from the dreadful Portable Ops. Also the auto aim dots seem exclusive to the Mk. 22 (and maybe other handguns? Never use them) while machine guns and such tend to use white lines that animate to show your aim is becoming less accurate the longer you shoot. You can also upgrade certain rockets to have almost instant auto aim, which is required for S ranking the custom robot battles. But yeah it's definitely very easy to get a head shot, the game tends to just subvert it by throwing helmets on the guys in harder missions, triggering an alert when you shoot the helmet off, which you have to quickly shoot another headshot before the guy starts running away and radioing. By the time I got to perfect stealth missions I basically stopped going for head shots because of the helmets. Ibecame too risky and in Peacewalker you get better results holding people up with the sneaking suit or just shooting anywhere on the body 2-3 times with upgraded Mk. 22. The amount of weapons and gear you never need to use in Peacewalker is insane.- 198 replies

The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?
syntheticgerbil replied to Reyturner's topic in Video Gaming
In Peacewalker, the Mk. 22 snaps to headshot easier the more you use it. It also seems to have nearly unlimited range because you can forgo bringing a mosin nagant in order to have enough weapons slots for the Mk. 22 and sniper/rail gun for helicopters as well as the sneaking suit so you don't get caught on the initial run of guards. It seems to eventually take out a guy who you can barely see way up in the sky through the snap to headshot thing.- 198 replies

Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita
syntheticgerbil replied to Thrik's topic in Video Gaming
I've been playing this lately, looks great but there seems to be a number of buggy animations. I'm not sure if it was in the original, as there are a few things I do remember such as certain objects not actually connecting with the hand holding them, but I don't remember so many conversations where a character's animation will start popping back and forth between different positions, sometimes getting as silly as the character going into a T-pose for a fraction of a second. It's kind of looking really unprofessional unfortunately. Also I hit some kind of game ending bug by talking to Nick about needing a lawyer where I can never complete the conversation. I had multiple saves since I heard about newly introduced game endings bugs, but I didn't think it'd be so soon. Also "GOLO FLAKES?!" and the water animation on the Rubacava four way hub skipping. Oh and NOW the cat race announcer completely stops after one visit! Come on now, Double Fine. That said, it's nice to have a game where the in game stuff now matches the cutscenes in terms of lighting, yet now the cutscene stuff sometimes looks worse because even though the documentary said they had uncompressed versions of the cutscenes (which I am guessing means 100% fidelity image sequences), I see some parts with some pretty nasty compression, especially when Glottis is driving I suppose I figured this would be a more impeccable remaster since I thought it was mostly a factor of slapping on higher res everything but it seems it's not so. I love this insane amount of commentary and concept art though. -
But if Up is bad, how can so many critics be wrong? I'd say Up is the prime example of everything wrong with American animated movies. The bar is set so fucking low here every piece of not absolute garbage gets a great rating.

The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?
syntheticgerbil replied to Reyturner's topic in Video Gaming
A lot of MGS3 is also making good use of switching your camo, so be prepared for that. It can either be a lot of tedium or strangely fun. This never stops, at least by Peacewalker. Weird goofy thing that MUST be done every time there's a Metal Gear. While I like MGS2 okay, it just ranks lower than 1 and 3 to me. MGS4 is kind of shit in comparison though and Portable Ops is absolutely abysmal. I'm not gonna lie, even though I knew I was gonna play as Raiden, I didn't realize it would bug me so much. He was just so fucking whiny in that game I couldn't stand it. I think a lot of my love for MGS3 also comes from just the amazing balance of story and gameplay that no other MGS has done before and since. It is of course long on the cutscene side like all Metal Gears but I always wanted to know what happened next and after the learning curve of MGS2 I felt like I was really good at 3. Also that torture scene was intense and amazing in a good way, since it's all about the interplay of the characters in the situation (and what they are hiding) rather than being about seeing something brutal. One of the best video game cutscenes.- 198 replies

Idle Thumbs 218: Yanis' Last Move

The episode has "Farewell!" in the subtitle, so I check here, kind of sad it could have been the last episode. Phew.
