Done! I killed the Spider Demon and completed Inferno. (I'm not going to bother with Ultimate DooMTM or whatever.) It's a great game, but I did feel like I could have handled it either being a bit shorter or continuing to introduce new stuff after E2M1. This is probably due to me knowing it pretty well indirectly, it being a backlog game, and my modern narrative-driven-FPS sensibilities; I likely wouldn't be thinking that if I had just bought and completed this back in '93... Next: Marathon

Seeing a Drew Struzan Star Wars poster that follows the style of his posters for the prequel trilogy and special editions fills me with trepidation.

Ok, so it turns out I'm still a little addicted to The Swindle, but thankfully I'm getting more DooMTM in. I defeated the Cyber Demon Lord and am onto the third episode, Inferno, which is set in Hell. It's really cool how the level design suddenly feels less orderly, bridges collapsing behind you, loads more demons. I feel like they actually could have pushed this a bit harder - held back on the demonic textures and potions etc until now, using more sci-fi stuff (except for the enemies) then switching to that stuff for Hell and leaving the possessed soldiers and med packs behind. Although I do like the row of cells with soldiers that you come across early on which suggests they're doomed souls rather than zombie dudes. I do have to take relatively long breaks between play sessions because while I'm loving it, it is quite samey outside of new textures.

How is it on PS4? (Hopefully a big patch for both will come out soon, taking it to v1.5.)- 103 replies

Excellent, thanks!

You know what, as it's free and you make it sound so interesting, I may slot it in as a breather between DooMTMs. How not hard is not hard to acquire..?

I can't be bothered to click through, does the article cover how they think they can get away with only 20% accurate facial hair? I'm making my way through season 5, and it's really weird that there are episodes I haven't seen before. Bart The Inner Child was very good, Homer The Vigilante was pretty terrible.

Thanks for the recommendation! As I said in that quote, if I get to the end and actually want to look at an FPS ever again, I'll deffo check out all the recommended ones. But doing backlog-only doesn't work if I keep adding new games to it! Also, I'd be very interested to hear more about Marathon and its historical interest/general quality if you fancy elaborating?

I think I'm nearly at the end of episode 2. It took a backseat to The Swindle for a while, but I just beat that game this week, so I should be getting through DooMTM quite quickly now. Although it isn't an easy game to sprint through if you don't know the layouts - lots of switches and cards and doors to find and backtrack to (backtracking not a negative, though - it's part of the slowly unfurling level design which is very cool and will probably give way to linearity once I progress through the years).

You can buy that upgrade (and I think Dan tweaked the price down in a recent patch, though I'm not sure when that will make it to PS), or the stick-to-walls upgrade which does the job too.- 103 replies

Re. the final level, I haven't completed it yet, but there's a way to make sure the alarms don't go off which is consistent with the rest of the game - just getting to the Basilisk would be far too easy! Re the BUGs - they are pretty high-powered but I'm very glad about that as it gives you more chance of having a few goes at the final level. Re. the purge - I find at 6 seconds it's really useful. Remember you can turn it off again so you don't have to charge all the way back up! Re. Vita - yeah, sounds like it had some tech problems. Hopefully a patch will be out soon. And yeah, you have to be pretty careful before diving into a room until you get double-jump - lots of cautious sliding down walls then jumping back up!- 103 replies

Hey, those earrings are the No Man's Sky logo!

Make that part of the negotiations - eg I'll take 45K now on the understanding that when I get that promotion my raise will take me way up to the mean income for that role, or I'll take 50K now and not expect any more than a 6% raise when I get that promotion. This depends on the honour system and how much you trust your bosses/company, of course...

The Equalizer is a well-made and watchable but utterly rote film with no character arcs, peril or even much story to speak of. It does have one of the most elaborately shot "walks away from explosion" sequences I've seen.

Ah well, we'll just have to agree to disagree; I find it works fine in the context of this particular game. In other news, this is now out on Xbox One!- 103 replies

Give them a medium window of salary as your expectation and add "but I'm flexible". If the average is 30, say you're looking at 28-32 but you're willing to be flexible.

"The Swindle" from Size Five Games for PC and consoles

Oh, sweet, I misread your Whatsapp message, I thought you were telling me the Thumbs were discussing Swindle and Dark Souls! Well, I was thinking more that maybe you hadn't got your upgrades up to scratch in time. I dunno, it's just weird that you would have the hacking ability and then go through several (which I take to mean six or seven) heists in a row where you can't hack a single computer. OR does it teach them that sometimes a heist will be wasted - you can't get access to much loot, you get killed - but that's part of the game and you'll be able to more than recoup your losses with a couple of good heists? I mean, if I reset every time I wasted two days in a row due to my own stupid errors,.I'd never get past Day 20! Like I said earlier, "I was also taken aback by the amount of people who demand to be able to 100% everything ever, even when the game is explicitly designed not to let you do that."- 103 replies

"The Swindle" from Size Five Games for PC and consoles

Hooray, this is featured in this week's Thumbscast! Meanwhile, Dan has given in to what is probably a vocal minority and released an update that makes inaccessible computers less likely and the basic upgrades cheaper. Personally, I'm worried that he's giving in to exactly the kind of hand-holding that gamers are used to and which The Swindle wasn't to have any truck with. However, it is kind of hard for me to tell as I've been beta testing it through so much balancing and I'm halfway through a playthrough at the moment. Either you must have been insanely unlucky to get several 4%s in a row, or you're just not practised enough at the game yet. In my latest playthrough I got to New Belgravia (ie the second district upgrade) in 12 heists - the game is not ungenerous. I assume your "strong philosophical objection" is regarding game design philosophy? I don't see an issue with a game showing you stuff you're not able to get yet, as a hint as to which upgrades you might want to aim towards.- 103 replies

The trailer made it seem like a typically inventive and adorable Aardman production. I'll probably watch it at some point on Netflix.

Unfortunately, we had about a million music threads before this one was started: I'm sure I posted some Cannon Fodder on at least one of those! EDIT: a quick search reveals it to have been linked here and here, and be one of the answers in this quiz thread!
