  1. I Had A Random Thought...

I got AdBlock to use on one site only - AVClub - because of those awful "stories from around the web" adverts (done by Taboola or something mostly). They consistently used disgusting imagery, like a photoshopped picture of Cameron Diaz with swollen, pus-oozing spots all over her face. Now those adverts are everywhere and even on sites like RPS where they apparently screen all their ads. Even though the pictures aren't as repulsive, it's still all stuff like "Use this Life Insurance trick or your family will be starving and penniless when you die very very soon" or "these photo fails are so hilarious (btw they all involve high school cheerleaders accidentally flashing their vaginas)" or "actors you didn't know were gay" or "20 actors who used to be attractive and are now HIDEOUS". AdBlock recently got bought and introduced a system where it defaults to only letting unoffensive ads through (though you can turn these off too) and also seems to have a system where you can tell it to block certain types of ads. So I might see if I can put it on for all sites but only block those shitty Taboola ads...
  2. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Okay, I think I'm going to have to give up on Dark Forces. I just can't get off this level (it's only the 4th or 5th, I think). I get all the way through it, do a great long involved thing with switches and doors and shit, then I have to get all the way back to the start of the level except I can't find a route back because I've come down a high step to get here and there are these turret things everywhere that kill me in seconds so I can't methodically search everywhere. The map doesn't even help because it only shows the floors that you're at the same height as. If the game allowed me to save, I could probably push my way through until I figured out the route, but as it is, my lives get wiped out before I'm able to. I might take a quick look at a play-through to see if that helps, but I'm not sure even if I find out the route whether I can be bothered to go through this huge damn level yet again. It's a shame. The atmosphere is great, but the levels are really frustrating in a way that Doom's weren't. Turns out I was right about the music - it is by Clint Bajakian, who also did Sam And Max Hit The Road. The music for this level gets very reminiscent of the Mystery Vortex music at one point! EDIT: I watched a walkthrough and it seems I was really close to finding my way back, it's just the crappy cliff textures make everything really confusing. Also it turns out you can shoot those turrets! So I might give this one last go...The problem is that it's not too stable so if you start alt-tabbing out to watch playthroughs and stuff like that, it tends to fuck the graphics up.
  3. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

Well, you're the only forum-goer who's seen this thread and bothered to submit their location, anyway...
  4. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

Hope you find a wig! Do you already have: crystal ball/snake different coloured eyes prominent crotch bulge ?
  5. Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

I got a Steam code for Arkham Knight from a mate who got it in a gfx card bundle. I expect they'll just include anyone with it in their Steam library. I already have Asylum and City though, and I hear Origins is utterly skippable, so it will actually be a bit annoying for me to receive it because the completist in me will demand I play it before moving onto Knight!
  6. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

Oh cool, thanks! Interesting to read that they tried to make it feel like it was made digitally (and that they were still using mice not tablets).
  7. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

Just found out from Tucker at DF that there was original artwork which was scanned in and cleaned up: As it had such a clean look compared to the scans of MI2, I always figured the DOTT backgrounds were created digitally...
  8. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

Well, you're not the only one - the only reason they clarified that was because someone brought up those pixelly notices on the DF forums! I've seen them pointed out elsewhere as well.
  9. Black Lives Matter

Like I said, he was apparently a school monitor. I don't really know what that entails, but I guess that means he was at least on the grounds already? He also had two prior complaints against him, one regarding excessive force.
  10. Black Lives Matter

Guardian article. Says this was about a phone in class, not chewing gum. Something else it mentions is that the deputy there is also a school monitor. Not that either of these details makes it less fucked up. EDIT: this Independent article has a witness suggesting it was about gum. It also says "A third video of the incident also surfaced on Instagram. It shows the student throwing punches at the officer as he tries to remove her from her desk chair." EDIT2: That third video is here, and shows her ineffectually batting her hands at his arm once he has her in a head-lock/choke-hold. That the Independent phrased that as "throwing punches" is pretty disgusting.
  11. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

I'd call that more of a video poem tbh.
  12. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

Yeah, they just confirmed on the forums that it is - they're waiting for Tim etc to tell them what these should say! Also, all this art is alpha/first pass. I wonder how clear they made that at Indiecade/in press releases, because it hasn't come across at all and everyone is assuming these are all final art.
  13. [DevLog] Cwine!

    Simpsons did it.
  14. Gave up on this after 7 episodes. It's quite fun, but the writing is so clumsy and slow. It's all so clunky, crappy-villain-of-the-week superhero-season-1 type stuff, and the dialogue is dreadful: Fireman in speeding fire-truck: "We're two minutes away!" Dispatch:" But people are going to DIE!" Stern scientist: Hey, what's that on your monitors? Are you helping Barry to save people from fires? Lovable nerd scientist: What? No. Barry who? Stern scientist: You know, Barry Allen who was hit by a bolt of lightning in the storm caused by our particle accelerator explosion and then went into a coma which he came out of nine months later with super speed? Episode 7 had the gang doing a name-the-scientist picture round in a pub quiz (names of scientists probably not the actual ones they used but it's irrelevant): Nerd 1: I think 4 is Pasteur. Nerd 2: No, number 5 is Pasteur, 4 is Tesla. Cop: Are they even speaking English?!?! What word in this conversation was too nerdy for you, cop? "Number"? "Is"? Also, the Flash could defeat every single villain so far by running up behind them and conking them on the head. But instead he runs up in front of them, makes a quip and then waits until they start firing their fire-weapon or ice-weapon or whatever before he runs away and is like "how can I defeat this guy?!" It is infuriating. Like, we've all seen the powers on display (hero and villains) a ton recently (Matrix, X-Men etc) so we're used to them enough that this stuff is glaringly stupid. Meanwhile, I'm binge-watching Once Upon A Time. The characters and dialogue can be pretty dull, but there's enough different stuff going all the time to keep it interesting. Twig's right, though, the central kid is very annoying.
  15. [DevLog] Cwine!

    Looks promising!
  16. Let's discuss what a video game is

I did a quick survey of myself and my girlfriend and neither of us would consider these things "play" unless the person in question was under ten years old or being super-camp/ironic. I was not going to post in this thread, but I found this statement particularly at odds with my life experience and I suspect many others would also.
  17. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

kickinthehead, why didn't you take any video?! Re. documentary, I get the impression this won't be happening. At most it'll be a half hour thing. However, it sounds like they've got loads of every other thype of special feature planned so I'm excited.
  18. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing it moving. Regarding filters etc, Spaff on the DF forums sez:
  19. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

That thing about the voice recordings is correct, and I was really happy to hear that. The DOTT board at the DF forums has lots of good info direct from the devs, if people are interested and don't mind going through a few multi-page threads.

  21. I had a similar thing to Chris with knowing a lot more about video games than my experience allowed for, simply by reading PC Zone every month (and watching friends play). I had it even moreso with films - I'd read loads about films even when I was far too young to see most of them. I still haven't seen Un Chien Andalou, but at age 14 when I first heard Debaser by The Pixies, I immediately got the reference.
  22. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hello Fireflower! I recognise you from the Double Fine forums. Please head over to the Plug Your Shit thread and post about your site's current sale
