Just watched Batman V Superman (my first time seeing it, and I went with the Ultimate Edition). It was... perfunctory. Better than Man Of Steel, I think. Not bad, as such, but just unremitting, brooding tension and grey muted tones throughout - even the big final sequence where is a glum, weary slog. I did like the way they played on the destruction of the previous film and questions of who Supes should answer to, if anyone, but man they needed some pacey sections in there.

Idle Thumbs 292: Sit In A Row And Look At The Wall
Ben X replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Ugh, I hate those 'stories from around the web' ad sections, they always exude so much sleaze and sadism. The new thing they're doing a lot at the moment is pretending Richard Branson has some awful illness (and using some repellent over-'shopped photo of him). -
The Ranking Of the films of Steven Spielberg By The Coward Robert Ford
Ben X replied to Patrick R's topic in Movies & Television
I know what you mean about JP - it's pretty softened compared to, say, Jaws. But it's still brilliant in so many ways (and I don't think I'd call the flea circus scene saccharine - I read that speech as (aiming for) pathos for an old man suddenly regretting all his mistakes). And Last Crusade is definitely the comedy of the three films but I'd rather that than a poor facsimile of the original (which I think Skull leant back towards), and anyway the banter between the two leads and Spielberg's skill at tightly constructing comedy setpieces to go along with the action ones make the heavier comedy aspect a success for me. (Finally: I actually really like Short Round and Quan's chemistry with Ford, it's Willy that sinks it for me, along with other issues with the movie.) Hope you enjoy the trilogy screening - I've seen Ark and Crusade on the big screen and they're glorious, especially the first one. -
The Ranking Of the films of Steven Spielberg By The Coward Robert Ford

I'd put Last Crusade and Jurassic Park higher up, but otherwise a solid power ranking. I just saw Ghostbusters 2016 and I cannot fathom how so many of you liked it so much. It was a passable Scooby Doo movie at best. An unfunny mess of a movie, seemingly aimed at 6 year olds. -
Winter Jam Along with dibs and Friends 2: The Unseeing Game Dev Choir, Conducted by dibs

So, did anything happen with this? I did you a sweet drawing! -
Only £3! Totes worth it, everyone (also the Dan and Ben games are now 29p for both, but everyone owns those now, right?)

Ha ha, but he's brilliant in Supernatural and Blues Brothers so it all evens out.

I think this is a common enough state to warrant its own thread. I'm going to start with a rant, but there's room for positive stuff, advice etc too! I remember when to get a job you just had to post your CV in, come in for a ten minute chat and that was it. Now you have to register online, fill in all your details (address, education, job history, references) bit by bit into badly formatted boxes, write a massive long thing about why you're right for the job, write out different examples of when you showed innovation, dealt with a difficult customer etc, then attach your CV and cover letter anyway despite having just fed them piecemeal into a load of shitty text boxes, then go for an interview, do some fucking Krypton Factor challenges, then do an interview where you get to answer the same stupid example requests that you've already written a mini-essay about in your online application. Then a second interview where you talk about the same stuff but with another person in the room listening, then you get turned down because you talked about having regular catch-up meetings but you didn't use the phrase "one to one". Other shit thing about job-hunting: everyone asking "how's the job-hunting going?" Well, I haven't got a job, so it's going poorly. It will continue to go poorly until I get a job, at which point it will be over. What do they expect the answer to be? "Oh, it's going really well! I haven't been offered any jobs yet but applying for them is so FUN!"

Nice little series of docs on NuDooM, includes some footage of the cancelled DooM 4.

No, that was a shared flash forward of Sam and Dean's that they experienced because of the mermaid event.

Ugh, I know, it's awful. I keep meaning to pick up The Wire on DVD for the same reason. From a quick Google, it seems like a similar situation - they were filmed on such a format that the extra information for 16:9 is there, but the move still involves some cropping/re-framing and of course ignoring the intent of the original compositions.

The X Files Season 12 Episode 13: "Wrong Thread" Mulder and Scully investigate why this isn't being discussed in the X Files thread. (And discover it is because of mermaids.)

Did people here end up liking this game, then? There was certainly a lot of trepidation at the start of the thread!

Awesome, thanks! People who enjoyed the engine should check out the showcase games that Cheese linked to above, especially Winter's Wake.

Sorry, I ended up rushing my reply and not answering your question, TLB: yes, the show does continue to throw a hotchpotch of belief systems and supernatural stuff in as MOTWs (and I'd argue S1 did that a fair amount - ghosts, werewolves etc). It is a bit jarring to see everything sharing equal validity. Also, you are right about the "Mulder is always right" thing, but they do start to play with that a bit as the show goes on. Incidentally, that episode with the guy stealing hair ("Irresistible") is often read as not being supernatural - the glimpses of that stuff can be taken as purely metaphorical; also, Chris Carter has said that it alludes to accounts like those of Jeffrey Dahmer's hostages who thought they saw him shape-shifting in front of them.

Bah, I left my reply in draft by mistake. Here it is anyway, despite now having some overlap with Patrick's: We have an X Files thread here btw: The show does continue to include MOTW episodes ("monster of the week", ie episodes that stand outside of the series arc plot), but I'm not sure why that's surprising you in S2 - as far as I remember there was plenty of that in S1...

So does this feel like an accurate use of the descriptor "magical realist"?

Thanks all! I feel like having an interactables highlighter might compromise the feeling of 3D exploration - it's better rather for the designer to make sure they lay out and size their objects to avoid (unseen) pixel hunting. Still, it's certainly an option something that some designers might appreciate having included in the engine...

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

In his biopic, Reggie should be played by Richard Kind.
