Ah, I don't have those yet! Just push, pull, speed and jump. No heal either Yeah, I kind of knew Op Flash wouldn't be my thing before installing it! As for RTCW, I had difficulty finding any in-depth retrospectives for it, only general Wolfenstein ones and even in those it is portrayed as mediocre. I think the shine must have come off it over the years, as I was under the impression it was fondly thought of, too. The flamethrower effect is sweet, though!

Yeah, Speed lets you dodge them mostly, but you can't have it on all the time. I had a bit of a trial run Force-pushing my own thermal detonators and it was far too random to trust in a combat situation (apart from which you don't really get the time to switch force power and line it all up all while you've got snipers taking your health from 100 to zero in three quick, accurate shots - maybe if I keep Push as my selected power and use F3 to put speed on instead, I might pull it off occasionally.). This is the problem a lot of games with loads of different powers/weapons have - it's often too much of a hassle/risk to use them so you just stick with the third gun up. I had the same issue with Dark Messiah. .
-
I can deflect blasters but not the snipers or the thermal detonators (which are also annoying because you have to kill from a distance the triclops guys - 'Grans', says Wookiepedia - who throw them, otherwise they explode). I actually managed to push on a bit further without cheating, but it took a fuck-load of quick-saving, memorising and luck. I pushed through some pretty annoying sections with these two games, so I'm obviously enjoying them in general, it's just there's a fair amount of very difficult/unfair bullshit in there too.
-
Nope. Unlocking my saber and Force powers unleashes a load of snipers and suicide bombers against which my new stuff give no protection, so it's even harder. This is just stupid, I'm going to have to start cheating to top my health up. Otherwise I'd be quitting here, I think.

Right, I discovered a couple of things which have helped: area-specific damage apparently exists in this game, so head-shots help; supply keys open a certain type of crate. The main things that are annoying me are the difficulty - you can fire five times directly at a stormtrooper and manage to miss him as he ninjas about the place and your weapon fires anywhere it likes - and the bad signposting which means I'm always missing switches, lifts, tunnels etc. I haven't had to check a playthrough for a game so much in a while. If it weren't for those two issues I'd really be enjoying this game as the presentation's great and when you do know what you're doing and get lucky with the combat, it's good fun playing Han Solo, blasting Imperials and hitting switches until shit blows up. I've just got to the Jedi Temple on Yavin and met Luke Skywalker. I'm on the cusp of getting my saber and Force powers, so hopefully it will all pick up soon.

Right, this is stupidly hard. The Imperial Remnant apparently hired fully-trained ninjas as their stormtroopers, each one is like a fricking boss battle. I'm going to see if there's a console cheat to put it down to easy mode. EDIT: fuck, there is not. Not sure how many times I can be bothered to attempt the third level with its Serious Sam style enemy-filled rooms but shitty weapons and sparse health packs. I may just have to cheat my way through.
-
Yep, that's Dark Forces games for you! Iirc, there are a load of console cheats that you can use to cheat your way through the shittier bits. I'm resisting the temptation because once I crack I'll just cheat my way through the whole thing and not really experience it properly.
-
This is generally good fun. A bit too much of the typical Dark Forces running around mazes pushing buttons, and it's pretty tough even now I'm getting used to the alternate fire modes, but it's still cool running around blasting Imperials and seeing gronks walking past. There was a nice little bit where I needed my mate Jan to push a button for me, and she asked me to come back and help her fight through some troopers then escort her back to the button. I've got to a bit where I can't figure out what I need to do (oh Allied Assault, how I miss your objectives compass!) so I'll check a walk-through before I get back to this (EDIT: grrr, I had to blow up a crate through a window which opens a door for some reason - I can't tell which crates explode, they all look the same!). I didn't start again on baby mode in the end, which might be my undoing, but these games really should be balanced well enough that I can get through on normal.

"The Swindle" from Size Five Games for PC and consoles
Ben X replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
Yeah, Dan made a decision not to "over-tutorialise" and to let players figure the rules out on their own. I think that trips some people up because they worry about the 100 day limit, but you can piss away 50 of those just learning the rules and still have a good run. I'm glad you're enjoying the ability to upgrade so you can achieve the previously impossible - some people don't like a level including something they can't do, and put it down to bad proc gen, but it's actually a way to show the player what upgrades they should be aiming for. Some players can't bear the idea of not being able to 100% every level, which is not what the game is about.- 103 replies

I was asking badfinger what lines "allude to the desperation of getting the Death Star info in A New Hope", I don't remember any...
-
Ahhh, thanks! I'm planning to read the manual if I can find it, as like the previous games it's got bacta tanks, binoculars, force powers, saber fights, all sorts of stuff to get my head round.
-
Thanks! I was considering that but wasn't sure if it was strong enough to make it worth it, will give it a go.
-
Okay, I've played it for about ten minutes and it's pretty nice so far. Looks really good (the exterior textures are really nice for once), nice little cutscene with Mon Mothma, some light puzzles at the start, and stormtrooper banter is always good. Seems quite difficult already - I might restart on baby mode. The blasters are clumsy and random, which is true to lore but a little irritating when you're firing straight at a trooper and not hitting them; I got my health knocked down pretty easily in a firefight. I seem to remember hearing this game really only gets good once you're given the 'saber. Also, the shadows are a bit wonky, but these little glitches seem to be pretty standard as I go through these 2002 games.

Aaaand I've just got to the sniper level, which takes the worst problem with the game - hidden enemies with magic aim - and fills an entire map with them. It's like the equivalent of pixel-hunting in an adventure game, except if you don't click the object within two seconds flat you have to start again. Knowing exactly where every enemy is doesn't even help, this is stupid. I may well have to give up on the game, unfortunately. I feel like it deserves it for all these incredibly frustrating sections in between the good stuff. I can't be bothered with Serious Sam 2, especially as I only have the HD version, so I think I'll move straight onto STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast™ (Dark Forces 3).
-
Turns out they are infini-spawning and the only way to get through this section is in fact to just leg it past everyone and get to the truck before they catch you.

Alien: Covenant (and all other Alien-related stuff)
Ben X replied to baekgom84's topic in Movies & Television
Reports on this were a little confused, but I think he downgraded to circumnavigating the events of those films rather than retconning them out of existence. I don't think it's yet confirmed as definitely happening anyway. We discussed it here: -
Come on and stream and welcome to the jam
Ben X replied to SuperBiasedMan's topic in Wizard Jam 4 Archive
Even positive-only stuff would be great! It's just, for me, a bit deflating to see someone play your game then get zero reaction at the end. It's something that happens a lot with streamers (understandably) when they're working through a large batch of jam games. Anyway, just a suggestion, it's still very cool to see people play all the (and especially my) games! -
Yeah, there lots of little steps towards that directed campaign thing, where you're running about with a platoon and getting given orders by a captain, or running and gunning along with a spy by your side. It does give extra atmosphere, but those parts tend to be the ones where you get funnelled down a corridor of death - really the open sections should be harder as you can approach them in different ways, and the corridors/scripted bits should be easier.
-
@Badfinger - not like it's a big deal or anything, but I do keep seeing people ask "where were all the Bothans?", which is about That One Line. Perhaps sclpls was referring to that general feel in New Hope, but I don't think so. (EDIT: and I don't remember any of these allusions in New Hope, what are you referring to?) @TychoCelchuuu - well, I didn't miss it, I was looking for signs of it! I put more weight on his hands not doing anything remotely post-shooting-a-guy over the clues you listed, though, seeing as he wouldn't need to hide it from anyone once the deed was done. (I may well see the film again at some point and notice he's stuffing a blaster back in his belt or something, though!)
-
Yeah, I gathered after seeing the film that he definitely shot the dude (and I do think it's a conscious reflection of the whole Han Shot First thing by the filmmakers), but I found it very unclear while watching...
-
THIS IS A SPOILER THREAD RIGHT? SPOILERS BELOW! SPOILERS! Did anyone else find it unclear whether Cassian shot the other spy in that early scene? When it happened, I thought "ooh, was that the troopers or the spy that shot him?" so I looked carefully at Cassian when it cut back to him. But there was no sign that he had just shot someone, his hands were fiddling with his lapel or something, so I assumed it was the troopers. I can understand why they decided to add some exciting stuff at the start, but it was just too much stuff on top of an already full movie. I wish they'd just added to what they already had instead of cramming in more planets, more spies. The film really needed to become laser-focused on the plot point of the diverse and ethically compromised rebel factions becoming a pure Rebel Alliance, and have everything pertain to that on some level, not pour more shit in there. Just off the top of my head, cut from the opening title to an exciting sequence where Jyn is abandoned by Saw (as mentioned later in the current cut) and that's how she comes into contact with Mothma's lot. (nb I had to google all the character names outside of Mon Mothma; like many others, I forgot them very soon after seeing the film, if not during it)

Correct! Spoilered in the OP is a list of the games I'll be playing. I'm only doing this to clear my backlog out, so unless someone buys me a game (as Paul did with Allied Assault, actually!) I'll be sticking to those on the list.
