A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
Ben X replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
Good sum-up article for Discovery: http://www.gamesradar.com/star-trek-discovery-news-cast-trailer/ A few points: set 10 years before TOS, will ignore nu-Trek but redesign a lot of stuff; "very cinematic, very high production value, and grittier"; GoT-level sex and violence a possibility if the show runners want to, as they're online; redesigned Klingons (possibly per 'house' rather than species-wide) and other species; will be on Netflix a day or so after CBS; Rainn Wilson is Harry Mudd; James Frain is Sarek; this big-ass trailer which, thank goodness, confirms that there will be a scene in which a female crew-member is down to her underwear to get space-scanned or whatever: -
A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

It's probably difficult to go back through this thread during a watchthrough and stop before you hit spoilers, as there are a ton of different viewing levels overlapping, but y'all should definitely post your thoughts as you progress and then have a read through the thread once you're done! -
A Eurogamer piece discusses the changing of the vibe a little, though this is from just before the latest update came out:

If that's the case and it avoids assholery, do you think it will still be to the detriment of the 'lonely explorer' vibe? (I don't own the game, but I'm just wondering if they're actually losing cool stuff about the game by trying to fix this 'broken promise' shit.)

Crashed freighters! Yay! Maybe in the next one they'll introduce sandworms. I do wonder if some people aren't happy with these big updates, though - particularly sharing portal codes so everyone can jump to the same planets and having VOIP seem like they might lead to a load of the standard MMO gamer assholery and fuck up the game's atmosphere...

Ha ha, fair enough. Maybe if I re-watched it I'd agree. Did everyone notice how Skyfall ripped it off at the start though, with all the abandoned beardy Bond stuff?

The Italian(-American) Author of (The) Godfather! Not much to say, really, just couldn't resist making this thread to go with Patrick's. Um... Did you know there's a whole sub-plot in the original novel about Sonny's wife getting her vagina embiggened so she could cope with his massive dick?

Wrong! DAD is actually very entertaining. It has some great action and is silly enough to recall the Moore heyday.

I quite like the idea of revealing Quantum to be an arm of an even larger and more secretive organisation, but the way they did it in the movie was pretty terrible.

This caught Spaff out as well with the DF forums. Don't know if he'll have discovered any shortcuts or anything you could use to get stuff back to normal.

Yeah, I've got shock +2, armour-piercing bullets and frag grenades now, so it's a lot easier. Also I've realised I can check out their health bar before picking a fight. I've been away from this for a little while. It's like a heavy drama film where I know once I'm in it I'll love it, but it's hard to get in the mood sometimes.

Once again, I will link to crazy people here thinking Crystal Skull was good (on a par with Raiders, even)
-
I think you may be overestimating the links between the two movies: More may be revealed one the next one comes out...

Loved Cloverfield, and just watched 10 Cloverfield Lane which was also great. There's now a third one in production which, as with Lane, was written as an original movie but will now be part of the very loose Cloverfield universe.

Also, it seems like Innes is defining "soft boy" not as disingenuous but sincere...

Important If True 24: Eye Explodes, Brain Expands
Ben X replied to Chris's topic in Important If True Episodes
It's really cool, it's like the popcorn version of Videodrome but still with lots of goop, plus data-streaming umbilical cords etc. Definite endorsement. -
Thanks for that, very instructive! I think it's the anonymity aspect that I hadn't really clocked and is the key to understanding a lot about it. Seems like far too much bother, especially as it wouldn't provide me with any tangible benefits.

The Thumbs walked right up to it by describing Cronenbergian flesh-blocks and organic memory storage, but didn't mention Cronenberg's film eXistenZ by name. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone here who hasn't seen it (and then Videodrome after that for further tech/flesh melding). -

This ongoing Idle Thumbs joke about the pronunciation of segue caused me to make a mistake when proofreading Kickmen's text >:( -

Apparently, and I may have read this here, the Mona Lisa was not very well-known by the general public until it was stolen and later recovered. -
That was only a month before his casting in 3hor was announced, which makes it extra salty.

I watched Sausage Party and enjoyed it. The narrative structure is a mess (the A-plot is a character slowly learning what the audience and many other characters already know), and the humour can occasionally get a bit lazy, but it's enjoyable for the first hour and then it gets really good for the last thirty minutes as it gets more inventive. The last section reminds me of A Bee Movie (which I thought was great) in the way that it takes a Pixar 'the-secret-life-of' premise and goes in completely unexpected directions.

I think Roderick liked it too! Perhaps Besson aimed to do more world-building with this one, but if that has a negative impact on the film as a single entity then it's not a good idea or needs to be executed differently. It's a trap lots of franchise-starters (and even -middlers) fall into these days.
