  1. Feminism

I've never understood gendered aspects of life that so clearly having nothing at all to do with gender. Clothing, hairstyles, even fucking colors get associated with gender. It takes all of a second to realize it's a bunch of bullshit based on no inherent quality of the thing. How can a color have a gender? Why is baking a 'female thing'? Why is appreciating flowers, or sowing for that matter? The biggest 'fuck you' sign on the wall is our association of pink with female babies and blue with male babies. This is so ludicrously ingrained that no one even thinks about it, but a hundred years back the colors were the reverse. What switched it up? Why commercial companies of course, such as greeting card businesses. Conclusion: ruling ideas on attributes of gender are shallow and based on nothing.

Are you working for Polygon on a regular basis or was this a one-off article, Niyeaux?
  3. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

Related and slightly more lighthearted is this Channel 4 ad for Sochi, which is pretty good.

Then forming your own indie studio is the way to go. Apply for a job at the bigger studios and you run the risk of being trapped in a soulless, competitive environment where everyone is frantically scrambling not to get laid off. Either way, it'll be super hard work, but doing it together with friends in a small team seems a lot closer to what you're looking for.
  5. Feminism

Regrettably, it was. It happened I believe two weeks ago? Surely we posted something a few pages back about it, I don't have the heart to dig it up.

That's rough, Subbes. Hang in there, Cabot.

It's nice to read, though I'm now a little concerned that they'll all read like "this game was really special to me", "And this game was also really special to me", &c. This must be super frustrating to you, but iterate and iterate some more, to make it perfect! The book deserves it. I do like that they're all about your own experiences with the games though, so it's good to think a little more on how to tackle that. Maybe by describing the thing you liked about it, or a memorable scene, without necessarily emphasizing your feelings about it? The fact that you're already drawing it is testimony enough.

Hmm, strange, I'd say the dentist needs to have a mold of your teeth before they can accurately recreate one for a crown. Perhaps the procedure is different for front teeth than molars?
  9. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

This is all the best thing of the year. Thanks, Subbes, for taking the time to set up this elaborate Weird Thing!
  10. Getting into the industry?

Yes, don't worry, Gray, it wasn't in the slightest meant as a dig at you or your enthusiasm. The finger pointed directly at the crazy reskinning thing that's been heating up the internet.

Jón, I can totally help you do a few of these. I love writing silly things. We can discuss my exorbitant fee in a PM you will now send me.

BigJKO, that book is something I definitely interested in. I've been mulling over buying some of your work in picture frames, but I never found the right one (the Star Trek picture is in my top list for it). A book is super cool though, collecting them all in one. About the descriptions: I like having them, because it adds some context to the pictures, gives you a reason to linger a little. But for heaven's sake, make them fun! Not just an informative Wikipedia quote - show us why we love these games, why you picked them, reminisce or share an insane anecdote. It would be a wasted opportunity not to make this deeply personal and inspiring.

  14. Okay, I arrived at the pinnacle of Star Trekitude: the first ever 'alternate universe' episode featuring Spock with a goatee: "Mirror, Mirror". And you know what? It's fantastic.
  15. Getting into the industry?

Why would you learn how to design a game when you could get into the lucrative business of reskinning apps?

So, yesterday I was crowned twice. Better than any current monarch in a kingdown, I have two, not one, crowns. Two is better than one, it is clearly the superior number of crowns to have. In a few weeks I'll get my gold crowns, the ones I have now are temporary. The procedure was not pleasant. The drilling down of two molars to cones wasn't bad, that's rarely ever bad. It wasn't annoying either that it took an hour and half. The killer thing was having a spoon of blue clay pushed in my mouth to make a mold. That was horrendous. I have a phobia for vomiting, so when the assistent over-filled the spoon and brought it too deep against the roof of my mouth, I started gagging, panicked, yanked the thing out of my face and jumped out of the seat. The silly putty they put in there hardens after a while, but it was still rather viscous, so I started desperately scraping it out of the back of my mouth. A nauseating experience. The assistent had put way too much on the spoon, so when I had calmed down the dentist came back and did it way more professionally, with less of the blue stuff and only on the area of my teeth, not in the middle. He carried me through the thing and the rest was peanuts. There were flakes and bits of putty all over the room and the seat and myself though. In short, I'm afraid I just blue myself.

Seems to me your choice is between a stable job that might be mind-numbing, but is also easy and doesn't require you to take any mental strain (listening to podcasts all day is not bad), and a job that will definitely take its toll. I think you should only choose the latter if you actually mean to pursue a postal career, since it sounds like a big investment to make for something just 'in between'. The pay is .5 times better, but is that worth risking a burn-out? With the first one you're keeping your options open while also having at least a steady income for six months.
  18. In other news, Kirk and Spock visited a planet where a bunch of red shirts died by poisonous venomous (thanks Teg!) plants, then they fucked up a perfectly fine society of immortal savages because it didn't appeal to Bones' sensitivities. The Original Series.

What a pleasant encounter! I can see how that made your day, Ucantalas.
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

I thought it was the weirdest thing, and sort of jumped the shark, despite it perhaps being alluded to in the original material. In this iteration of the fiction, it completely fell apart. But then season 3 has been filled with world-breaking events that make me view the show with a sense of anarchic enjoyment, but certainly not the serious consideration it once had and in an ideal world, still should have.

That's insane, Nachimir. Take good care of yourself, before worrying about other people's [mental] health. Don't be that mother that puts the airplane oxygen mask on her kids first.
  22. Magic & Mayhem is fantastic and I played it a lot. Super charmy and a lot of fun choosing your spell loadout. Mystic Towers (!!!) I also played a lot on our old 386 computer. It was hard as balls. Maybe because I was a kid and didn't understand what the hell was going on.
