  1. Check out Idle Thumbs' Ning page

Is this like that Twitter thing I've heard so much about but never bothered to try? Or is that different? (Yes, I'm that lazy.)
  2. VOTE FOR THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME

Go Grim Go! I think at some point we have to make distinctions between influence and quality. While I think SMB wins on both, that doesn't mean that a game of the same quality but with less recognition doesn't deserve a spot on the list. If it were "The Most Influential Games of All Time" or "The Most Important Games of All Time," that would be the case. Lists serve a purpose both to take the pulse of the evolving attitudes of whoever is making the list, and as a an opening to discuss what is important in games and what makes the great ones great. Just because different people have different preferences than others doesn't mean that the reason behind these preferences can't be argued.
  3. VOTE FOR THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME

Grim Fandango. If everyone who doesn't recognize its status chooses to be pussies and abstain from voting all together, that's fine by me.
  4. EDGE names Ocarina of Time 'greatest game ever'

    Except for Grim Fandango.
  5. Nintendo announce WiiWare

True. That all depends on how the store interface is set up. Nintendo would have to have both administrators and customers giving input on which games are worthy of prominent positions and which are buried a couple pages down in the "puzzle games" section. It will require a bit of work to avoid lame-ass games being treated with equality, especially if Ninty wants to appear fair. he other danger would be that only the bigger distributors get prominent positioning, and all the indie devs' games get treated the same.
  6. So, I generally hold any game in strong distain if it expects me to be able to to run around and fire a gun at the same time. But the Wii has changed that a bit. One of the few good mini-games in the intuitive-controls-challenged "Super Monkey Ball" was based on a first-person shooter, and the ability to move with the nunchuck's analogue stick and aim with the wiimote just makes sense to me. But I heard Red Steel wasn't so hot, so I held off getting any Wii games that involve firing guns until the release of "Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition." I'd never played the game (or any other horror game) before, but it seems to be quite revered in the gaming community at large and, more importantly, I'd seen positive mentions of it in a post here on NGC games. I'm very pleased with the controls, though there are a few (not necessarily Wii) issues I'm getting used to. The remote and nunchuck really get you into it in, as can be seen in the first section, in which an army of zombie-like villagers persist in trying to kill you. You stab at them, shoot at them and shake them off you. It's a pretty intense way to start things off, and I got my head chainsawed-off six or so times before emerging victorious, but I guess everyone who has played it before knows about it. My main problem with the control scheme: You have to stop and hold down the B trigger to go into shooting mode, which is a bit of a pain when you have 5 Zombie villager dudes whom you want to kill while running the fuck away. To avoid unwanted pans, you have to move the analogue stick to turn or look up and down. I've continually pressed up to look down, since I feel like looking down is leaning forward. That's not really Wii-related, as the camera-op controls would be the same on any system (and maybe I can invert them in preferences, which I've done on other games). Once you're looking in the wrong direction, it's a pain to reposition your view. But from what I've played so far, I'd say Capcom has done a great job transferring the title to Wii. Anyone else given it a try (or played previous versions of the game?)
  7. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

I noticed another control element that could have been integrated with the Wii: You should be able to look at and pick up stuff by pointing the wiimote at it, instead of just walking close to it. At least that's what I want to do after playing DS adventure games...
  8. Nintendo announce WiiWare

Do the Xbox Live games have to get ESRB ratings? (I don't have an Xbox.) Maybe they worked a deal and Ninty didn't bother to?
  9. Nintendo announce WiiWare

Does it really cost $5000 for a rating regardless of size, scope and production cost? That's bullshit considering that all the console companies have made it mandatory.
  10. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

I appreciate the adding of tension, it just messed up my mojo a few times, as I tried to flee before I let go of the button and ended up with my camera on the ceiling. I'm sure I'll get used to it in a few levels. Without the Wii controls, I wouldn't play this type of game (and I didn't own it before), so it was worth the $30 to me. As for the target cursor, it's not an issue for me, but there ought to be an option to turn it off for those who don't want Capcom to hold their hands. Me, I'd like Capcom to send someone over to my house to tell me it's all going to be OK, where to go and what to do.
  11. Macs Suck

I had the same reaction when I read that post (I only have the PC copy), but since I don't actually have an Xbox or PS2, I didn't actually buy a copy yet. My younger cousins have a PS2, so maybe I'll get them a copy, and an Xbox version to play at my friend's house...
  12. Suicide inducing gameplays

The original Ninja Gaiden is the only one of the series I've played, so I'm not sure which one everyone here is talking about. It's probably the game I've played most without actually finishing (made it to the last level several times). What about games that are too easy, though? I thought the final castle in New Super Mario Bros. was too damn short and simple. I want a real epic last castle! Maybe that's why I appreciated that the Meat Circus was a bit hard. (Interestingly enough, I didn't realize that this was the same old thread from so long ago, so I thought, "Everyone's slagging on Meat Circus again!?!")
  13. What the hell?

Sonic used to be awesome! He really did I tell ya!
  14. Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK

Thanks for the link. One more thing in regards to SiN's question about Canada being more lenient than the US, and it actually applies to a lot of the European countries as well: Very few films in the US are rated NC-17, whereas films rated for 18 and up are quite common in other countries. So children under 17 can see an R-rated movie if accompanied by an adult. NC-17 has an unfair stigma (porn makers don't submit their films for rating, yet many uninformed people assume that NC-17 is porn).
  15. What the hell?

    Fayk said RPG, not poker.
  16. Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK

Oh yeah. That and the Creme Rinse. So, there's no way that they could release the AO version on the Wii? Lame. The Wii is a porn portal, after all. I've always been more familiar with the MPAA's hold, but this de facto censorship is even tighter, in that it completely eliminates format choices, rather than just outlets. So I assume that this will definitely be altered to an M rating and the AO rating won't be available? It looks like in this case there is no difference between the government imposed and the voluntary, unless they want to release the game on PC.
  17. Rather than start another not-yet-released Wii adventure game thread, I figured this'd be a good a place as any to point out this interview with the guys behind Hotel Dusk and Another Code. http://www.cubed3.com/news/7874/1/Cing_Talks_Hotel_Dusk,_Another_Code_for_Wii_&_DS,_Plus_More I've only played about an hour of Hotel Dusk (and will hopefully get that fucking wire hanger off the wall soon), but I've liked it this far (the music has been off most of the time). I know others here have enjoyed the games...
  18. Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK

My problem with any game being banned is that it's impossible to quantify artistic intent. Recognize the game as being for adults only? By all means. Refuse to let mature adults judge the game's merits themselves? That just stinks of the arrogance that the game's makers may have shown in producing exploitational garbage (if the game is indeed that—I don't know enough about it).
  19. Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK

The rating system might be, but the US doesn't officially ban the stuff. Here are some of the films that have been banned in Canada (including something about Pokemon—huh?): http://www.imdb.com/List?certificates=Canada:(Banned)&&heading=14;Canada:(Banned) Anyway, "Fat Girl" was specifically banned in Ontario, but it was apparently later given an R, so I don't know what's up with that. I'm not particularly looking forward to this game (never played the first), but don't agree with banning anything. Does it have any aspirations other than to shock people with violence?
  20. Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK

Any chance of a ban in Canada, Miffy? I know films like "Fat Girl" (which only has one really disturbing scene and that scene has a point) have been banned, but it might just've been in once Province. In the US, the only thing to worry about is defacto censorship—i.e. stores that won't stock the game because it's AO. This is a problem with movies here (Blockbuster won't rent NC-17, some movie theaters won't show them and some newspapers won't run the ads), but not many games get above M so I don't really know.
  21. IGN has just enthusiastically endorsed the game. *crosses fingers http://wii.ign.com/articles/797/797414p1.html
  22. Macs Suck

Sorry—I meant I heard from other sources as well. In terms of looking out of place, does it look like it looks in OS X or is it a Windows style that's not right?
  23. Macs Suck

Yeah, Safari 1 was shit, but it's really stepped up lately. I haven't installed the new beta yet. I hear, however, that the new Windows Beta is atrocious right now.
  24. Macs Suck

I understand that it's irony, I'm just saying that some jackass re-stating all the Mac clichés doesn't really have the observations or insight to be called the best writing about Mac and Windows ever. (Unless that's the part that was supposed to be ironic.)
  25. Pokemon Friend Codes

Could have been one of our own with a mask? So, uh, I've never played Pokemon but find the cartoons and movies quite unbearable. Plus, I'm not nine. Is there still a chance I'll like the game?
