  1. FUUUUUUCK!!!

No, they replaced the whole damned thing, which makes me the proud owner of a circa July 2008 PAL 360; thankfully most NTSC games I have run on it (I had to say goodbye to the bundled Forza and GTA4, but meh)
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

Terry Gilliam might be the only director that I'm completely partial to, because my enjoyment and fascinations for movies is directly linked to watching his movies. I mean, discovering Munchausen when I was 10 felt like having my imagination being completely unlocked and discovering that you could layers of layers of different emotions at once. Also, when I was 14, I fondly remember playing geeky Indiana Jones with a friend as we hunted down for a whole summer a VHS of a rumored trur-er version that we weren't sure even existed (namely Brazil's directory). And being blown away when it turned out to be awesome And then, I remember stumbling upon the Pythons, and seeing other movies I loved instantly and discovering there was a single guy behind all of those, Terry Gilliam. And finally when I was 22, I ended up in Melbourne the very day Tideland's preview was screened in a 30's theater. It was a rainy day and of course, it was sold out but a shady guy in a raincoat offered me a ticket 10 minutes before the beginning of the movie and Tideland was the most thought provoking film I had seen in a while.
  3. FUUUUUUCK!!!

Kudos to Microsoft Dusseldorf's repair center : sent the box last friday and got it back yesterday and it took them only one day to process the repair, the rest is UPS getting from here to there and back. Best service ever.
  4. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I discovered today, McBess a funk/rock band (I guess ...) through the weird Wood music video featured on CgUnit cD1Rrfc0y-M and then discovered their awesome take on the main title of a movie that just got adapted to video games and got some LBP's DLC love : Vruy8P5rtYo Their youtube channel features several Guitare! pieces that are also quite nice.
  5. WTFFF!!!!

Also , in the first picture, aren't those Spaff's signature E3 2005 Top Gun glasses ? The mystery deepens!
  6. Everybody seems to have a PC copy TF2 here - except Toblix and that's because you're not worthy enough,H4ck3r boy. - but I've only been playing with a handful of Thumbeteers, mainly Thrik, bgbennyboy and Norfolk'n'Clue.I've been trying to convince Metallus to join us, but he keeps insisting that he's on a different time zone - which is possibly the silliest excuse ever : timezone, on the internet ? Please. So this thread is a call to all Thumbeteer from this side of the Atlantic and the other to organize some kind of TF2 session, since I reckon that'd be quite fun. Lot's of you are now in the UK, so maybe UKThumbs vs The Rest of the Civilized World would be in order ... it should bring you all, old memories of the British Empire trying to invade France or something like that. It doesn't have to be right now, but I thought I'd post this while I haven't forgotten about the idea.
  7. Awesome MI2 2D/3D Projection thingie

Les Gobelins is an awesome school - I mean, I've never met a guy who went in and out of there who was less than excellent at what he/she did- and every year, the 2nd year students output awesome shorts for the Annecy festival. are pretty awesome, my favorite one being Monstera Deliciosa (despite the music) and Le Lac Gelé.Also, Tekkon Kinkreet really felt like a step down for Studio 4°C, both in terms of animation and content. I hope they stray away from anime's stereotype for their next one. The short you linked to is brilliant though : IZYNS3p-Scg
  8. Awesome MI2 2D/3D Projection thingie

This is a very successful technique if you exactly know what the point of view will be : we used it in a more limited and straightforward way (in that case, I think most people call it texture projection and sometime camera mapping) to get a very awesome matte painting of a city landscape straight into the game without loss of quality and still get room for some minor camera pan, traveling and shiny fog/atmospheric post processes. Mulan uses a similar technique for its opening sequence on the Chinese Wall dpYRZdw0UpA It'd be a great day when the Deep Canvas tech from Tarzan ends up in games (ZBrush polypaint is a step forward I guess) RZA6nitNeYw This is so awesome.
  9. And they might even outsource, to Singapour!.
  10. Nice! The EGA version is totally new to me : is there any record of how the port to VGA went down and how the artists felt when offered the squared number of colors they previously had ? It's funny because, I always thought the style for MI close ups and cover was inspired by Howard Pyle/Wyeth and, to a far lesser extent, Rockwell ... and that it succeeded bloody well in getting these onscreen. If I was melodramatic, I'd say that knowing it was not the original version feels like having based an opinion on some sort of a fraud. But I'm not melodramatic. Not that much anyway.
  11. Totally agree with Cheetohands, here. Thanks formulating it so well!
  12. Well, I meant "developed and/or supported by blahblahblah". Though, I didn't know it was from Poland, so thanks for the info.
  13. The discussion about European games is funny, because most people here would describe these as German : the Settlers, the Witcher, the Anno series ... are (like adventure games) mainly done and supported by our friendly neighbours, ze germans.
  14. The sad sad tale of Tim Langdell

It's fun but not so much : there's now a small part of our brains dedicated to Langdell but I, for one, can't remember for more that 5 minutes who are Johannes Söderqvist, Soren Johnson or Andrew Chrysafidis. It's unfair
  15. Scribblenauts

Maybe : magnet (to get attracted to the second steel thing) scissor (to cut your own rope) axe/key (to bust the cage open) ?
  16. Left 4 Thumbs

You guys make me want to play the game again; I'm re-downloading it right now! You should know though, that I'm complete shit as a Zombie in Versus mode - didn't really have the chance to play anything but the campaigns in difficult/expert mode :/.
  17. Trine

So, I played the Trine demo, liked it, went to the FrozenByte forum to see which channel I should use to give them more money, it ended up being Steam, but then I got frustrated by the EU price tag vs. the US price tag (30€ vs 30$) and thus, my whiny, cheap-ass request is : Would someone from the US have the kindness to organize some mass steam gift operation for us European gamers, so that we can get the sweet thing at a fair price? Yey, that's cheap, but with what I'd be saving, I could donate to this poor, starving Sahel kid you maniac US steam week-end deals mongers have been neglecting. Also, obviously, I'd be paying the generous soul via Paypal, beforehand.
  18. Mmm, I stuck at the very beginning : I've chosen the stealth approach and now I can't think of anyway to put it in practice. Also, how are the sales going ?
  19. Can I just share something with you...

OMG toblix, what's happening to you ?!!!?
  20. Tales of Monkey Island

How is 7 a harsh score ? I think it's a pretty good score. Maybe it's cultural perception : 7/10 is 14/20 in the french grading system, a mark any pupils would perceive has very good, 16 being the threshold at which you were considered to be part of an elite.
  21. Really ? I can't remember that .. and frankly, I don't feel like going through the epic 101,48 minutes of the last podcast again to find a 20 second snippet. Meh, maybe leaving the ending of this story ambiguous is what's best, too.
  22. Dantes Inferno trailer

Toblix video made me giggle a lot since all the people being interviewed are drenched in shadows just so that they look a tad more extreme. Also, half of the game footage is about Dante's beheading people in different fashions, so meh.
  23. Mm,so how did the Lumines game ended, Chris ?
  24. Tales of Monkey Island

As far as usability is concerned, I don't think I would trade 2 seconds of explaining a mechanism based on very well known HCI interactions (i.e. right click and drag 'n drop) against hours of 5 clicks away actions. The rest might be true, but it seems strange that they tried to contain item combination by making it a hassle; if such a gameplay feature is so toxic to the rest of the game, maybe it shouldn't be there in the first place. Now that I think of it, I can only remember 4 instances in which I used combination ( ) ; so they just might have been able to go away with making those automatic.
  25. Tales of Monkey Island

The inventory UI is so unnecessarily convoluted there must be an interesting story behind it. I mean, why they haven't use right clicking for inspection and using a selected item on another for combination, is a mystery. Also, putting it on the side of the screen makes it a nightmare for dual screen users like me, but that's a minor flaw.
