  1. Far Cry 2

The Tone Control episode with Clint Hocking was great!
  2. Building a home theater...

That sucks, I hope they'll replace it. My screen is finally done (mostly, maybe only some small adjustments needed)! some of the magnets tore off (I had them superglued to screen), but thankfully none have come off after regluing.
  3. Building a home theater...

I got it mounted using 4 mirror mounts (the kind of clips that hold it from below and above). I saw it wasn't straight enough so I thought a while about how to make it straighter and ended up doing my first idea with magnets (and tiny metal plates glued to wall). Worked out great I think but I may need to add a few more magnets - currently have 4 in corners and 2 near center. In the end I could probably have used just magnets, but seems safer to let the couple of mirror mounts bear the weight. Today started adding the black velvet border and that is a pain in the ass to do, plus the velvet somehow produces unbelievable amounts of lint (if that's the right word) and gives some black color to everything it touches. The first border is done, looks ok.
  4. Building a home theater...

Ok, marked the first holes for mounting the screen. No going back now, will drill some holes into my wall tomorrow morning.

I think I forgot The Stanley Parable from my list. That is actually my game of the year. It's beyond brilliant, the way the narrator often actually seems to read your mind.
  6. Essential PS3 exclusives

Since the forum doesn't allow searching for "PS3", I'm creating a new thread My PS3 was at my parent's house for a long time so I haven't used it a lot. But now I set up my projector and are ready for some console gaming again. What are the essential PS3 games I can't play on PC? (I also don't have a working Xbox 360 at the moment so just console exclusives are ok to recommend too). I've played all the Uncharteds, am playing Last of Us, and have RDR: Zombie Expansion, ICO/SotC, echochrome, Stacking, Journey, Flower. Any interesting indie game exclusives I've missed? [edit] Oh, I've also played Heavy Rain and don't care much about shooters (such as Killzone, Resistance or whatnot). Also I didn't like the first or second God of War much, so 3 is probably not for me either.
  7. GOTY.cx 2013

I think gamse of the year is becoming less relevant to me since I often play games on a later year than they are released and don't really keep track of when something was released. Notable things I've played this year: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons -- this was really brilliant, with an interesting twist on input, some memorable emotional moments and a great overall structure which eliminated almost any repetition. It really felt like they managed to distill the design to its very core elements -- there was nothing superfluous in it. Gone Home -- not my favourite game of the year, but an important one. Miasmata -- I don't remember if it was this year or the last, but it was amazing. Civ V -- got me back into playing strategy games. (or at least A strategy game, not sure if I'll play any others -- crusader kings II requires too much effort) The Last of Us -- an ok game so far, haven't finished it yet. MotorStorm: Apocalypse -- really fun racing in 3D Spacebase DF9 Alpha -- very promising game Kerbal Space Program -- to be honest, it's a bit intimidating and I haven't found the time to really play it much, but I want to Botanicula -- was it from last year? Still worth mentioning. Awesome music and visuals and fun puzzles

So I got myself the K400 and it's ok (works with PS3 as well, except in YouTube) but I can't figure out how the multi touch scrolling is supposed to work. Most of the time when I touch it with two fingers it scrolls to the top of the page, and only sometimes does it actually scroll down when I pull down with two fingers. I can't figure out when it works and when not. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the gesture I'm making or how I'm touching it. It certainly recognizes my two fingers every time because it never moves the cursor when I attempt to scroll. So it seems more like a software issue. I wonder if it could be conflict with a previous mouse driver (I used to have MS intellimouse).
  10. 3D PC Gaming

The FlatOut games are not bad in 3D. FlatOut 1 didn't seem to have any objects at wrong depth. FlatOut 2 had ridiculously elongated cars with a high depth setting, and Ultimate Carnage (a more detailed remake of FO2) had some minor things at wrong depth. I think the initial wow effect is wearing off though. In mid-game I tried switching the 3D on and off and at some point I wasn't sure whether I was in 3D or not. FlatOuts do look a bit more cool in 3D occasionally, but most of the time it doesn't seem to matter a lot. In 3D I find it easier to notice various superficial details, such as the interior of a car. I still have to try some more types of games, but so far my impression is that 3D is more than a gimmick in games where most of the important details or effects are near screen depth or closer. Trine (2), The Witcher 2, MotorStorm: Apocalypse and Super Stardust HD are great examples where I really enjoy 3D. In MotorStorm you obviously need to look deeper into the scenes to know when to turn, but a lot of the action and various effects happen close to screen. Games where you look towards the horizon a lot don't seem to gain that much as the 3D effect gets lost the deeper into the screen a thing is. FlatOuts have so many fewer goings on near screen depth that most of the time you might as well be playing in 2D. Far Cry 2 has some close to screen things going on, but I just couldn't get the brightness/contrast right (active glasses make everything much darker) so I gave up on playing it in 3D for now. I have high hopes for Batman: Arkham Something, as it should be similar to The Witcher 2 in how close/far to the screen the focus of the action is.

I got like 10 2€ games from the sale. Incredipede probably the best. Also got some PS3 games but that was just because I had only recently got it set up again. I wanted Metro Last Light and The Last Express, but the account I use only for online buying ran out and I was too lazy to add more money to it. This sales season is turning out as bad as the one from two years ago -- still haven't played all the games I bought then.
  12. Building a home theater...

Just tried MotorStorm with the new screen. Feels like a resolution upgrade from the brown wall I projected on until now!
  13. Essential PS3 exclusives

Oh, I also joined PS+ and am installing some of the free games, but WTF, 1h+ to install a 12GB game (after download!) [edit] I guess it was downloading the other stuff while installing, the later installs went faster.
  14. Essential PS3 exclusives

I've been enjoying the shit out of MotorStorm: Apocalypse and Heavenly Sword! Will try some of the other recommendations soon. I also found the demo of Super Stardust HD to be a very promising 3D game, but not sure if the full game holds up.
  15. Building a home theater...

You are certainly moving faster than me, but I don't have a wife to push me so I took it really slow building this, with various in-progress stuff and garbage lying around on the floors I just finished applying the last coat of paint to the screen, and hopefully will hang it up in a few days or so. I still haven't got any material for the black borders, but I'm thinking that I'll try it on without any permanent damage to the wall, and if it looks really ugly I may just stick with projecting on the brown wall for a while. On another note, I've been noticing that whenever there are really highly saturated blues on screen, they really stand out awkwardly. I wonder if projector calibration is something I could handle myself (being somewhat red-green colorblind) or if I should get someone professional to do it (not sure anyone even does that here)... I once tried messing with the color settings while looking at BioShock (lots of blue and other colors as well), but I could only improve the situation marginally.
  16. Assassin's Creed: Buccaneer

Do you think there's any hope that it will be some % off at the holiday sale?
  17. General Video Game Deals Thread

FlatOut 1 is only 1,74€ on Steam! Just bought it to get a digital copy. Also FlatOut 2 is on sale and there's a whole FlatOut Complete pack for 9,99€ , but I hear the 3rd one is not good (by a different developer). Note: FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is a PC version of an Xbox remake of FlatOut 2. I think I haven't played it yet, but I think it's very similar to 2, but supposedly improved in some way. I would really recommend at least the original to anyone who plays racing games. I think it was (one of?) the first to introduce physics with destructible scenery into racing games. Playing MotorStorm reminded me of FlatOut a bit. There's a lot less going on on screen than in MotorStorm, and car damage is more final, but the cool physics element is there. And the AI is actually challenging and doesn't seem like it's obviously rubber-banding (don't remember if it is somewhat or not).
  18. General Video Game Deals Thread

Personally I think you won't miss much if you don't play it. It's ok, but definitely not as good as the first one.
  19. Moirai: Fast Farm Fun

I played it, but the catch didn't make the game that interesting to me.
  20. Incredipede: The Meta-QWOP

Just got this off the sale. It was boring at first, with many levels doable just by holding down one of the muscle keys. But at some point it really becomes interesting and has moments of both QWOP and GIRP in it. It really seems like a meta-QWOP. It isn't as challenging as QWOP, but explores what happens if you have control of differently connected muscles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TIxef7gelnI
  21. Building a home theater...

I'm guessing you would have to look up the specific lag for a specific receiver... I actually forgot to do that with my HDMI switch, but I haven't noticed any lag so far.
  22. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

    Now you're just taunting me
  23. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Yeah, it is bad in the very first cutscene already, but something I can live with. 3D is a bit weird too, but not too much. Probably should've gone with PC version.
  24. Assassin's Creed: Buccaneer

Is this the first time the PC/Console releases of AssCreed were simultaneous (or were they, I didn't pay much attention to actual release dates)? Now I'm doubting which version to get, although I would usually pick PC. The PS3 version seems to support 3D while with the PC version it doesn't seem to be officially "NVIDIA 3D Vision Ready", but I'm not sure if this game would be good in 3D, especially considering how long it probably is (might be tiring in 3D). [edit] Actually Wikipedia seems to be lying about PS3 3D games, as the PlayStation store says Black Flag is not 3D compatible.
