  1. Photos of things

I've been experimenting with 360 degree photos: Tallinn at Night from Above Toompea by Erkki Lindpere, on Flickr
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

I guess I had better subtitles. Didn't see that, except in one case it said "(shouts out)" when she seemed to be saying something. I liked the movie, and it made me think of two other movies I liked about kids growing up in islamic countries: Children of Heaven (1997) and Nafas/Breath (2016).
  3. American Honey

Just watched American Honey and it is surprisingly good, I expected less due to seeming lukewarm initial reception by critics. It also surprises by not ending up quite as depressing as I thought it would be after seeing the trailer and the start of the movie. There are some dark moments, but also light ones, and to me it at least fealt like it didn't end up predicting a neverending vicious cycle of poverty. Actually maybe this is the theme of Andrea Arnold's movies - that the negative cycles can be broken. She's really becoming one of my favourite directors besides Jim Jarmusch and Kelly Reichardt.
  4. American Honey

I'm about to see Wuthering Heights soon, but I can easily recommend Red Road and Fish Tank. I especially love the main character in Fish Tank.
  5. Casablanca (1942)

I've seen it as an adult twice and I think it's great, although I wouldn't elevate it as high as seems to be done generally. I don't remember exactly what my qualms with it are, though.
  6. Arrival

I liked the movie, but I kind of agree with Patrick that they glossed over the potentially most interesting aspect of the story in favor of the almost mundane/cliche.
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

I liked it a lot, and the ending wasn't to my taste either, although I no longer remember it exactly - I'm watching too many movies so I may forget some details quickly. I don't think I have much to say about the movie except that I liked it a lot and I thought the visuals and sound were excellent. Yesterday I saw Silences of the Palace, which is a Tunisian film that has some commonalities of theme with Raise the Red Lantern, with the remnants of a harem still living confined to a wealthy family's compound.
  8. Movie/TV recommendations

I am and I did, also because I'm watching one movie from each country and still haven't gotten to Saudi Arabia.
  9. What does "scan the same" mean? Fun list! Double Indemnity would be a great replacement! I would add Stranger than Paradise Coffee and Cigarettes
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

I dropped American services I don't need when trump got elected, also I had to use VPN to access it which I normally don't do.
  11. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Listened to that Sundara Karma album - not a genre I'd usually be into, but quite liked it.
  12. The Next President

If things go really bad, you're all welcome in Estonia! Almost everyone in Tallinn speaks English, and the extreme right party only has the support of about 10% of people (they briefly had 14% last year). But we have only about 4 parties more popular than them. There are some problems with racism & sexism, though. For example, we have the word "neeger", which a lot argue is not offensive to black people. I'm pretty sure it is, but it's very mainstream to still use this word defiantly in the sense that "our language is sacred and I will use this word dammit because it didn't have any negative connotation". Yeah right, then why do we also have the word "leheneeger", which basically has the meaning "slave-like journalist". Also we have a huuuuuuge wage gap, and I think most women in Estonia have pretty much internalized that they are treated as inferior in some ways and despite the wage gap they mostly seem to want to avoid appearing feminist and "gender quotes" are still the butt of jokes sometimes, although less and less, perhaps. I guess it's getting better, though. Gay people can't marry, but there's some civil union thing not exactly equivalent to marriage that was made into law recently, although there have been some problems implementing it. Another small issue is being right next door to Russia, who likes to attack their neighbours.
  13. Ok, I found a python script on GitHub that converts from Letterboxd exported ratings.csv to IMDb format, which can be imported to Criticker. Will give it a try.
  14. I haven't tried Criticker, but I doubt I would move away from Letterboxd because: Started using it about a year ago - it was real buggy at first, but now it's a really smooth experience and I use it daily because I watch movies every day. From the description Criticker sounds like it's all about finding personal recommendations for you. Letterboxd is also about the social network, not just me personally. Although I'm mostly using it for personal watchlist/diary, I'm also checking out reviews by people in my network, such as Patrick, if I happen to be on the page of a movie others have seen. It's been pretty hopeless trying to get my friends on Letterboxd - a lot would just use Facebook as the only social network service, really. Not going try again with another service, I'd rather stick with one. I don't really lack film recommendations. My watchlist is almost 500 long, and people keep recommending me more when I speak to them about movies. I'm trying hard to trim it and watch movies from there. I haven't yet watched 72 movies from the Blu-Rays I've bought over the last couple of years. I have downloaded hundreds of movies I'd like to see and I think I've seen less than half of them. I'm also going to the cinema when there's something I think will be good, and I subscribe to Mubi, so I've a lot of movies to watch. Now one thing that does sound interesting to me about the description of Criticker is the database search. Patrick, maybe I'm wrong, but AFAIK Letterboxd doesn't really have a comprehensive search where you can make up complex criteria? Rather it has some criteria of browsing movies and then you may be able to add a couple of additional filters to it. I wonder if I could easily import my Letterboxd data to Criticker, in that case I could give it a shot.
  15. Best Films of 2016

Is OJ MiA actually a movie? Letterbox says it is over 400 minutes long. I thought it was a mini-series?
  16. The Next President

The republican party is basically sounding more and more like a terrorist organization to me
  17. Best Films of 2016

I do not get the hype over La La Land. It didn't even make my top 20 of the year.
  18. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I have only listened to the whole thing once, but there are two things I really like from Mouth Sounds: ACVC y Shit kind of meh on the rest so far.
  19. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Yeah, of course, actually it might be that doing it real time is efficient enough... although I remember the game having performance problems when it came out... but those probably didn't happen at a time when lip-syncing was important
  20. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Three words: mount, and, blade. Of course the complexity increases exponentially with the dimensions (and more added dimension are provided by different weapons, shields, mounts).
  21. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Sometimes I wish the forum had tree-shaped threads, could be a tiny subthread discussing that alone. I had forgotten that the lip-sync was real-time and now in hind-sight as a more experienced programmer, to me it seems really dumb to do it real time since the input files never change, you could just save the lip-sync info as additional parameters for each sound file and never calculate it again once the audio file has been finalized... Or maybe at the time there were complications with doing that...
