That picture probably offends people who were abused as children.

(Too many capital letters? You tell me.)

My graphics card has been acting up as of late. At least, I'm pretty sure it's my graphics card, since what happens is, when I play a game, suddenly the screen freezes, then it shows a weird crazy brown pattern, and everything stops responding. Weirdly, the sound continues normally, but I can't even toggle caps lock (which, now that I think about it, leads me to believe the problem might not be the graphics card after all) so I have to hit reset, and everything's fine after that.

ANYWAY, since I'm (or was) pretty sure it's the graphics card, and I wasn't planning to build a new computer until next year, around Sim City or Dishonored, I ordered a temporary card to hold me over. Now, my current card, an AMD 5870 is so old I can't even buy one anymore, so I thought, okay, let's get some other okay card, and, even though I'm going to go with Nvidia for my next computer, I thought I'd go with another AMD now, so I can just switch her out and bob's your uncle.

ANYWAY, I was checking the stats on my current card versus my new one to see how many more CPEY/GGR channels I'd be able to parallax bitstream in 92bps supermode when I noticed this weird thing, and this is the real subject of this post, and this thread if you know what's good for you:

This new graphics card I ordered, an AMD 7870, though more powerful (I assume!), uses less power than my current one. Weird, right!? One would think it was the other way, that the more powerful the card, the more power(!) it would consume. This can't go on, obviously; the Laws of Physics tells us you can't end up with a graphics card that simultaneously draws sweet ass graphics on your monitor whilst also powering your computer! Also, the new graphics card has not only twice the R.A.M., but also twice the fans (it has two fans)! This could mean two things: half the temperature, twice the noise, neither, or both. Whichever way it goes, I'm in for a hell of a ride!

Sorry if this thread was a disappointment. I tried looking for a generic hardware thread but failed (I didn't try that hard)

edit: Oh shit, I forgot to add references:

Wikipedia et al (2012), Comparison of AMD graphics processing units

First of all, nobody can replace this guy, whoever he is. Don't try to find someone with his exact build, winning smile and personality. There are lots of fish in the sea, man. Put up one of those sheets that you can tear the bottom parts off of up on a cork board somewhere, and say you're a cool guy and have an Xbox.

Fucking MOSFET scaling, man. What worries me now is that I may get the same problem with the new card, and then I'm stuck with a graphics card I really don't need, and a computerful of components I have to diagnose. Maybe it's the one of the RAM sticks, maybe it's the MIDI keyboard, maybe it's the PSU. Whatever it is, I'm in for one hell of a ride!

Holy shit.

Suddenly everyone is like OIMG DONT READ MSNBC OR GOOGLE NEWS OR THE GUARDIAN THERE ARE BATMAN SPOILERS EVERYHWERE!!! Though I find the thought of managing to this apparently film-breaking spoiler until it's released here (apparently they still send big rolls of celluloid by steam ship) I'd still like to give it a go. Have any of you been exposed to the spoiler against your will?

So, apparently Revolution have been working on what is likely Broken Sword 5, and it's going to be 2D. More here, at the new and rather great games site Hookshot Inc.: http://www.hookshotinc.com/charles-cecil-how-app-store-saved-revolution-software/

Could be great, too.

The London 2012 Summer Olympics that are in London with Sponsors and will feature Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals
toblix replied to Nachimir's topic in Idle Banter
I can't really think of anything that embodies everything I hate about commercialism more comprehensively than the Olympic Games. Also, when you mix it with Orwellian London, warships and soldiers my head explodes. -
Charles Cecil twote this the other day: I guess this just confirms something is happening. Oh boy, I hope it's a 2D adventure with beautiful hand-drawn graphics.

All the Hotman games are really cheap on Steam now, if you're into killing people. You get all three games for almost nothing. WARNING: NO S&M NUNS

I have this idea that gaming headsets are more for comfort and having a non-shitty mic than audio quality. Whenever I use them, it's to be able to hear people talking in Skype or other chat systems with even lower sound quality, so I turn any other audio down to almost background level. I haven't heard a single song on them, but I bet they're not super great for music.

https://twitter.com/#!/search/uplay The sad thing is, these companies have never cared about these complaints, because they don't need to. Once it's back up people will quickly forget about it, and then Far Cry 3 comes out.

I bought Dead Island because I assumed it has online co-op. It does, right?

I have to say, though, I'm a huge fan of this kind of user interface. Not necessarily for its usability, but for its high resolution, detail, use of tool-tips and general PC-only-ness.

Hah! "Unfortunately you don't have enough money to do that now, but if you did, it would look like this" and then a tiny picture. Worst. Tutorial. Ever.

I bought this because it was cheap and I really like how the maps look. I'm terrible at strategy games, especially ones I have to spend a lot of time in to get a grip on, so I came into this expecting to find it terrible. I jumped right into the tutorials, and my gosh if these aren't the most terrible, pathetic, useless, tacked-on-at-the-last-minute excuses for tutorials I've ever come across. It starts out pretty good, telling you where to click and what things are, but it quickly becomes just one or two text boxes telling you sort of how things are, maybe referring to buttons that aren't there, and then if you're really lucky, it does that thing that tacked-on-at-the-last-minute tutorials always do because they realise their GUI doesn't support it, which is break spectacularly. If I ever develop a strategy video game, one of the key features will be that the GUI and game engine is fully scriptable, and supports tutorial stuff like locking down functions, pausing everything, indicating stuff, whatever.

Yeah, I guess they're pretty bulky, but not more than most circumaureal (enclosing the ears) headphones.

I assumed he was referring to headsets (i.e. with a microphone.)

I have these, and am quite happy with them. They're called G4ME, so you know they're for cool gamers.
