I dreamt last night that I had completed three games during the weekend and was really proud of myself. Then I woke up and was confused and was trying to remember did I really achieve three completions in one weekend. In the end I got disappointed when I remembered it was just Mafia II.
-
Mafia II (PC) It was good, but nothing like the first one. The city looks amazing. I wrote more on the game's own thread. RPS was very much right in their Wot I Think.
-
So yeah I completed this on saturday. Clocked around 13 hours propably, and three hours of that were cutscenes. It was actually better than I thought, but still I agree on most of RPS's Wot I think article of last autumn. I loved the city, it looked amazing and still kind of alive, even though there wasn't much anything to do there. Eating food was useless as was the gas stations and there were no shops to go to with the exception of clothing stores and some restaurants. The music fit the game perfectly. I had not heard for example Bill Haley & The Comets in a long time. Also voice acting was top class. The driving was pretty much fun, just annoying to drive long ways again if you happen to die at interesting points. It was interesting that even though it was advertised that the cutscenes would be in engine and not pre-rendered video. Still some were pre-rendered where Vito is always wearing the leather jacket. That was quite bad decision. I don't know any reason why all cutscenes couldn't have been in-engine rendered like most were. All in all even though they worked on the game for like five or so years, it still looked really unfinished. Like they had the tools ready, but didn't have time to put actual content so much. Also true that Vito is really not a good protagonist like Tommy Angelo was. Now I have decision to make whether to get and play the Jimmy and Joe DLC contents or just forgetaboutit. I don't like DLC in general so maybe I'll just skip it. Is either of the DLC's worth it or are those waste of time and money? I actually found some trains just staying still on the tracks, but those were never moving. This was during some later mission when I just went driving around on the train tracks with a car instead of doing what the game told me to do. The cops were pretty annoying, I could even drive through red lights and the was a cop at the lights waiting and no chase followed from that.

So, of course I had to hunt down and test one 3DS handheld somewhere on friday and while there are no demo stands apparently anywhere in Finland, the nice clerk at a local shop noticed that I was looking at the boxes and reading the advertisements about 3DS so suddenly he asked that would I like to test out one 3DS that was on display in a glass cabinet. I said hell yeah and the guy gave me one of the AR cards and the 3DS. I have to say that the 3D effect is pretty damn sweet, I didn't know it would work that well. Now to decide whether I should wait a year and get the 3DS lite that will eventually come or should I ask a co-worker to bring one from US or should I just not buy it at all because I will always hate region locking. Also the amount of release games seems to suck in my town. I saw only 6 games available and Shadow Wars, the most interesting of the bunch was nowhere to be seen. Also makes me angry that in the advertisement pamphlet they have 16 games listed but no mention of Julian Gollop's game! Even frigging Rayman 3D remake of a 11 year old game gets a mention.

Kirby eats other characters! Cannibal of the rainbow world!

I guess Nintendo still really hasn't learned how they could make online capabilities more easier and user friendly. That kind of function could be easily added with a system update, yes?
-
Yes, this is what I will be spending most of tomorrow on. Time to check all those sweet post mortem panels.
-
Now that is just... What I don't get is if they have to postpone it, why the fuck is the release still not worldwide at the same time! The thing that is interesting is that they switched the way it's released now. Other countries get it first and USA has to wait.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Music from Ryomaden, the taiga drama of last year by NHK. The musics are playing in my head all the time. We have watched almost half of the whole series in less than two weeks. fBqfB_D1Nqc -
At some point I have to take on a quest to play Deus Ex 1&2. rhz_mKDGxm8 Lets hope I would get to those during the summer so I can then prepare for the third one.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/23/watch-the-gdc-classic-game-postmortem-talks-for-free/ I didn't even know that David Braben was having a post mortem lecture at GDC 2011.

In Chris Remo's Gamasutra article about the 2k developed "X-Com" game, Julian Gollop wrote some interesting inputs in the comments. I thought the man and his game deserves an own thread so here goes: In the comments he revealed for the first time, at least to me, that he is developing a 3DS game and it will be a launch title. What is known is that Julian is working for Ubisoft these days and it could be an upcoming Ghost Recon game according to some rumors I read, but it could also be an original title as there is nothing official about this yet as far as I know. There are apparently some screenshots already available somewhere in the net about this Ghost Recon 3DS game. I've always rated Julian as high as I rate guys like Eric Chahi, Michel Ancel, Frédéric Raynal, Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Warren Spector. Julian's last game was the Gameboy Advance game Rebelstar: Tactical Command from 2005 which was very much in the way of X-Com, but due to the limitations of the GBA, it felt a bit thin to me. Julian and his brother Nick are most famous for developing X-Com: Ufo Defense/ UFO: Enemy Unknown back in 1994 and the third game in the series X-Com: Apocalypse in 1997. Before that they made the excellent Laser Squad and Rebelstar games.

Awesome song, haven't seen that in a few years. Happy B day Tiberius Kirk! j9IdUMwWhao

Well then that surely sucks. I have none of those games on a physical disc except Prey. I was hoping for something like FarCry as I still have that somewhere in a box.

Was in the newsletter? I don't get that for some reason these days. Usually I receive it a few weeks later, which is really strange to me. Well, yeah now I did a google search and now it's all over the net reported.

I was checking it more than once yesterday&today and it has been online all the time. They got the AB Rio offer going during the first day and I would've liked to test it, as it's a Finnish product after all. Not otherwise that interested in AB anymore. I did hear about the lawsuit however, funny stuff these trademarks. How can you even trademark something like an appstore. It just feels like a normal word. Application store. Would it be ok if they called it an appshop? I bet technicality reasons would let it pass.

Rumour is that Citizen Brown will be released next week's Wednesday.
-
The Amazon Appstore is quite fucking lame. Only available to US customers. Why even open the shop if you don't have it ready for the whole world? This really makes me pissed off. All the regional bullshit that is still put in movies, games and these kinds of shops are really artificial, annoying and useless. Even Nintendo dropped the bomb on their on feet with 3DS region locking and Valve's Steam with releasing games on different dates in US and Europe.

There was a retro event at a local university campus last friday. I got my first taste on various crap like the old Sega and Nintendo light gun "cannons" from the 90's. Enforcer and Menacer I think the names were. I don't have nostalgia for running C64 games from a tape. That takes forever, like Movie Monsters game took at least 30 minutes to load up. It's all craziness. I do have an overall nostalgia for all things technological from the old era, but I still like to really keep away from hell like C cassette loading times.

Question about Steam, how many of you have unlocked games just with the CD key in Steam? I just got my Prey DVD and it actually did work, I installed it first from the disc, but when I noticed that the Steam unlocking actually works, I uninstalled and let Steam do the rest. Now I'm wondering that do I have any other older games in my closet that had a CD key security system. It would be sweet to get those to my Steam account.

I shouldn't look at forums too much, but overall I've seen that people are dissing it pretty much without even looking because of the name "Tom Clancy game eh, well meh." Of course forums consist for just a small percentage of actual people who go out buying games so you are propably correct. And internet stupidity is at it's max in places like Youtube comments, so those never give any picture about the actual people who buy games. I really do hope this game is great and I hope it will sell. When and if I get a 3DS at some point I will be propably buying this one as one of the first games for the handheld. At least Julian's track record is so good so far that I'm hoping Ubi Sofia has what it takes to make a great game.

Nice, I'm going to look in to the secrets after I play this through for the first time. I'm also wondering what will be unlocked when I complete the game as in the Wii version main menu there are couple of lines marked as ????? This is a nice article. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33373/GDC_2011_Daisuke_Amaya_Draws_Lessons_From_Cave_Storys_Development.php Daisuke-san is one of the game developers I would love to meet and chat someday. First need to get better at Japanese of course.
