  1. New people: Read this, say hi.

Oh man, welcome! Thanks for coming by!
  2. The Hypothetical Adventure Game

Yeah there are actually quite a lot of simple state machine and dialog branch managers for unity at this point if you just want to replicate SCUMM or Mass Effect style dialog structures. I've never used AGS though so I have no point of comparison. This art style seems like it would work very well with a high frame, rate slightly floatey (or at least untethered, unafraid to move) camera like that employed in Broken Age. Reducing it down to a retro look would be a bummer. Yeah I quite like it too. The colors and levels feel very strong. I can see why you might be frustrated with the layout not feeling winding or other aims we can't see as outside observers, but it has a lot going for it regardless.

Please don't shut up! What people wrote in the posts below yours but above this one say it better than I could. There is interesting discussion to be had, beyond insinuation and accusation, even on the Internet! Sorry if I was contributing.

I don't think he's off base or being opinionated in a way that is different from me by pointing out that the Mr T character is being stylized only to look more like minstrel imagery. Those choices by the artist aren't arbitrary. Your not being bothered by the image is fine but it's not a reason to blanket label someone else's opinion and feelings.
  5. Feminism

Ehhhhhh. The joke was that she's a toddler who plays (presumably destructively) with Duplo, then her creations were revealed to be not destructive, but already more surreal and interesting than her brother's or father's Lego stuff.
  6. The vernacular is wanting

I've never heard alpha and beta defined by the testing pool before. I've always heard it as internal milestone definitions, going back to Apple II software I geeked out over in elementary school. That's not to say my internal definition is correct or there aren't competing definitions, but defining your software state by your testing pool seems backwards to me, unless you happen to be a tester.
  7. It exists! You listened to it! Let's hang out.
  8. Nick wrote about exactly this earlier in the thread, if I remember correctly!
  9. Idle Thumbs 133: Johann's Baton The next generation is here and seems pretty similar, but way sweatier. Nick sweatily plays NBA 2K14, Jake sweatily attends the NYU Practice game design conference, Chris sweatily probes the beginning of the new XCOM expansion, and Steve "Hot Scoops" Gaynor sits in the guest seat, sweating profusely. Games Discussed: NBA 2K14 (PS4), Killzone Shadow Fall, XCOM: Enemy Within, Crusader Kings II, Pause Ahead, Untitled Pong-Style Game, Risk Of Rain Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  10. Been a smiley on here for like 8-9 years!
  11. For whatever reason, the comparison to Airplane just finally clicked for me. It's totally applicable. Comparing it to a Zucker movie wasn't being initially allowed by my brain, I think, because I don't associate Airplane and the like with any sort of high concept aesthetic humor -- they don't make any attempts to look like high budget or particularly well production designed movies. Jazzpunk has it's own crazy style front and center, but that's kind of a headfake as far as what's actually going on moment to moment - unlike a Blendo game, Jazzpunk isn't really about that a lot of the time. What happens within that, though, is very much in the spirit of those movies.
  12. Gone Home from The Fullbright Company

Shh, don't give away his secret!
  13. That seems incredibly unlikely given that they're similar on their most notable axes - mechanically AND aesthetically - but stranger things have happened.
  14. Idle Thumbs 143: This One's Fr4e Could Steve Jobs have saved Far Cry 2? Is Sega the Pepsi of video games? Is Apple the Nintendo of tomorrow? Things Discussed: The Banner Saga, The Yawhg, Crusader Kings Kings 2, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition, Far Cry 2, Super Mario 3D World, Apple, Coke, Nintendo, Pepsi Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  15. He went home! Had stuff to do, unfortunately.
  16. He's just been busy! Family in town and stuff. Next week is Sean's return. Or a really awkward episode that's just me and Nick.
  17. Will Armstrong, our programmer, was a programmer on Bio 2. He worked on the player movement and weapon interactions among other things.
  18. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

We saw the Boston dynamics logo right after we finished podcasting. An ill portent. I'll have you guys know I barely slept last night, but it was because I was so wound up with exhilarated happiness from opening that package. Not because of Steve's secret BigDog leanings. Edit: Blambo!!!!!!! .......
  19. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Olly has been on Chris' last two Spelunky dailies. Watch them on his twitch channel!
  20. Idle Thumbs Portaits

Those are all strangely effective at looking like I'm sticking my head through holes in the paintings.
  21. Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2014
