  1. I was very startled in the middle of eating to hear Chris read out my full name. I had a moment of panic in that very childhood "am I in trouble?" way. Thank you so much for answering my letter, very illuminating. And now I know how Nick has time to play games for complete work days! I can't believe I forgot the right Caesar, I was trying to recall an old old memory of reading a Mad magazine in my grandmother's basement and got confused. Hearing Chris' muttered "...Fuck you." so delighted my partner and I that we went to the video to make sure that it was directed at me rather than someone else in the room. Nope, sure enough, there's that moment where he tries to read DaDatman (which was not meant to trip anyone up, sorry!) and then realizes that the's wasting brain power on something powerfully stupid. "Fuck you," he mutters at me through the phone. Owned. "Make a Thumb laugh" is now crossed off my bucket list.
  2. @Jake One shudders to then think what Genesis would do that Nintendon't.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

@SecretAsianMan Why not keep a bag of those little disposable flossers in your desk? That way you don't have a thing you have to keep clean it's a little less intensive.
  4. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War(dor)

@Dewar I don't think there is a ton to get out of it, and considering the rich bounty of good new games we are in, one's time might be better spent elsewhere, imo. Thought I'd post a gameplay video here in case someone comes to this thread not having seen it. I'm pumped!
  5. @Patrick R hmmm, I wonder if someone in these here parts would help with some UI design for a nifty web/flow chart.
  6. This was a really great episode, feels like you guys are really hitting your stride. My partner and I have listened to each episode on car rides, and we turned to each other after this one and both said "That. That was a good episode." @Patrick R The Wes Craven thing might make a good letter? Also, I kept hearing Tomes and Talismans in my head in the same cadence as Griffin McElroy said Omens & Portents.
  7. On ads, I came here to agree that I love all the goofs and banter that come with them, but then I heard my first episode sans-ads and it was pretty sweet. It's sad to think I would have missed great goofs like Jake whispering at Nick to creep him out, but without that "intermission" the podcast feels like it goes by at a speedier clip. Not that I'm quick to be rid of the pod, but there is only so much time in the day.
  8. Ranking the Films of the Coen Bros.

Going to make my on but I need to watch a few of these, and also re-watch those that slipped from my mind. I literally don't remember a single thing about Ladykillers, I think I enjoyed No Country but after reading it I would like to evaluate it again, and Barton Fink has always been divisive for me. I think maybe it was too front-loaded for me by other people's expectations, but I remember just sliding off it and thinking that it felt amateur-ish and poorly paced. That was ages ago though, and I think I'll re-watch it today.
  9. Painting tabletop miniatures

In case folks don't know, the Crate & Crowbar has started a second some-times podcast about miniatures! The first episode is up and even if you don't listen to it, scroll down on the episode page for some pretty sweet models from Tom and Chris' collections (they are both doing Age of Sigmar at present). http://crateandcrowbar.com/2017/02/28/miniatures-monthly-001-tiny-plastic-people/
  10. This is making me shamefully aware of how few Spielberg movies I've seen. I was actually just enjoying this video essay on his use and style of long one-shots and thought it belonged here. I think I have much more fondness for Last Crusade than most because my grandpa taped it off TV and gave me the VHS. It was always around, while Raiders was something I would rent regularly. I wouldn't see Temple till I had already established Indy's universe in that context, and it seemed shockingly ugly, loud, and garish. Which I did find weirdly captivating, it was like an underground comix version of an established favorite. I find that most of my film tastes were sculpted by my grandfather's obsessive and cheap habit of taping any movie he thought was decent with his unlimited cable plan, then giving tapes to each of his kids. Why did I grow up with a tape that had on it Gold Rush, Modern Times, and City Lights, in that order, while my cousin grew up wearing out a tape of Duel and Close Encounters? I will never know, but I think he was loosely trying to sculpt his grand-kids in different directions, to see how they would play out, taste-wise. @Patrick R If you haven't already, I'd love to see your power rankings for Cohen Bros. films.
  11. Consolidated ID Exchange

Added! I hadn't realized this was here.
  12. Letterboxd

Excited to have so many new people to follow! I'm Meat2Bones
  13. General Video Game Deals Thread

Humble Bundle Space Sale A lot of good games on here, although some of the deals are not the best. Good excuse to pick up something like Stellaris or Off-World Trading Company you might have missed.Weirdly I can't find a link to it from the homepage, just from the newsletter. The sales still seem good, though!
  14. Casablanca (1942)

Hmm, fascinating @Simon. I had noticed that it was one of those movies that every time I went back to it I felt like it was multiple movies whereas I had only remembered my own "fan cut" (pretty much just the bromance). @Patrick R There's such joy in that kind of experience, I just saw Spotlight for the first time and ended up watching in 4 times in a a week, once I had moved past the plot and surprises I was just enjoying watching those actors turn those conversations and play off one another.
  15. Very excited for all the Truth coming down the chute. I am always trying to get more people into the show and I'm excited for the new and broader context.
  16. Quitter's Club: Don't be afraid to quit the book

Gah! Sounds awful, probably best to dodge that bullet!
  17. @Mawd Is that the read on that relationship? I hate the relationship, but because it seems like the most deeply unhealthy and abusive bullshit ever, and especially bad for Kvothe. I thought it was being set up as this terrible thing that is eventually going to cause him to kill a king, but he still won't get the girl, because their history is one of just awfulness. I felt like Kvothe's attempts at being a "white knight" were more a reflection of his naivete and inexperience, and were ultimately destructive and harmful to him.
  18. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

@eRonin Woah! I went to the VOD marker and after a few minutes felt like I needed to sit down, there was so much going on! The game looks great, though, I was commenting that I was not familiar with it and when you had talked about streaming it I weirdly had been picturing Chrono Trigger. Waaay off base.
  19. Photos of things

@neonrev Also, a neat idea if people are interested but having a hard time suggesting things because of the technical gap, would be that you could send out flawed/discarded lenses and let people play with them to see what happens?
  20. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

@thenexus6 I almost did the same thing, but I found basically playing with a walkthrough up was still fun. I don't care about trying to prove I can get the leaps of logic needed to get the puzzles, and parts of it are just obtuse. I love the setting and music and humor, so I never tried too hard on this go around to beat my head against it's rough edges. I did find that restarting once I decided to do that helped me stay in the story, though. That way it was basically a good movie I watched in 3 parts.
  21. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Nice. Although, to be fair, I imagine that was true or writing in it's first generation.
  22. For those still waiting for the 3rd book, there are 2 very good in-betweeners to read. The first is the short story "The Lightning Tree" which was written for the Rogues anthology of stories edited by GRRM, itself an excellent read. The Lightning Tree describes a day in Bast's life about town, as he bargains with children, seduces and is seduced by, eats, naps, and tells stories. The story is a tight encapsulation of much of what is great about the Kingkiller books, and is wonderful for everyone who saw Bast rip that bird in half, turn it into fire, and then use it to mend a table, and thought "more of this guy, please." The second, The Slow Regard of Silent Things, is at first a novella about a day in the life of Auri, the strange waif character who lives in the walls of the university. The book excellently describes more of the structure and nature of the University and it's older sections, while focusing on Auri's extreme difficulty in making it through a day due to her mental conditions. It's very specifically about someone living with mental illness, and while this will make it a tough sell for many, I found it ultimately rewarding and not exploitative. The second half of this book is something that all fans of the books should read. It's Rothfuss directly talking about writing the books, his writing process, and writing Auri. He explains that it is painful for him to write and that he can't release a thing until it has gone through at least 20 re-writes/edits. The Slow Regard of Silent Things was meant to be something he just did for himself, and he was surprised at how much time he ended up devoting to it. The section where he describes who prompted him to publish it I found extremely lovely.
  23. Ben, is that what that is? I thought so but then I assumed I was just misunderstanding it. If there is precedent then it makes sense, though. Bleh. I found most of Prometheus terrible in terms of writing and acting, and this looks like it's going to continue the super heightened everything. My favorite part of Prometheus was it's focus on the android during the beginning, and I found myself wishing that the whole movie had just been Michael Fassbender on a spaceship trying to become Laurence Olivier. This trailer again made me fascinated as to what Fassbender is up to, then just has a bunch of people screaming while blood splashes.
  24. Life

@YoThatLimp That sounds amazing, congrats! I've never worked anywhere nearly that long, I imagine that must feel crazy to make a change after that long. @Gormongous I'm so sorry about what your going through, it sounds rough in every way. My only advice would be that hanging on is probably hindering healing and causing you more pain. If you can find a way to call it 'done' in your mind then you can start to recover. Otherwise it's slowly bleeding out, from the sounds of it. Please take care of yourself and I hope that the sense of renewal at New Years helped. One of my resolutions for the new year is to out loud say nice things to myself from time to time, even if it's just thanking myself for remembering to take advil when I have a headache. Self-care is important in these times.
