  1. Yes, Ironman is a good idea. I look forward to being the quickest one to fail spectacularly!
  2. Idle Thumbs Streams

I watched the first few Rimworld streams, decided to buy it and now I don't have time to watch the new streams because I'm playing it instead. It's definitely one of those games that put me in Civ mode, where I can play for 8 hours straight and not realize what I'm doing with my life.
  3. ketchup on pizza

    Yes please!
  4. I have mildly bad news: the Batman episode generator (and most of the predictive text stuff out there) is not exactly the Voice of Robots. Most of the stuff I've found is using this code; it generates a dictionary from the text corpus fed to it, but then it only suggests the next word given the previous ones. It gives the user a list of suggested words, and it's up to whoever is using the program to "write" the story by continuously picking the next words. The amusing results are great, but they are heavily curated. (I'll try to write a quick thing that uses this code and picks the next word at random based on the probabilities that the code already calculates and see how much nonsense comes out of it)
  5. Don't get me started on professional cycling! It's probably one of my favourite things in the world and I'm always happy when someone has any reaction to it that's not "it's really boring". So the central mechanic that generates the strategic component to cycling is how much energy you can save by riding behind another cyclist. Inside the peloton, you're spending 30-40% less energy than at the front, because overcoming air resistance is where most of the power goes at those speeds. That's why a team leader needs other guys to "pace" him: not because they need encouragement (though they might!), but because having other cyclists to punch a hole into the wind for you is super useful. That's also why breakaways are normally doomed to fail: you have a limited number of cyclists sharing windscreen duty compared to the peloton, so the average energy expenditure for those guys goes way up.
  6. UK Thumbs

Last chance to join! We'll be at the Post Office Vaults tomorrow at 19h!
  7. Rimworld

I remember one of the colonists specifically complained about having their sleep disrupted, and another complaining about having to share a bedroom when Chris forgot to put a vent between two bedrooms, so private quarters seem to be encouraged.
  8. Inside

I think this might be the most visually accomplished game I've ever seen. There's a distinct aesthetic throughout the whole thing even if the environments have a lot of variety, and the animation work is just ridiculously good.
  9. UK Thumbs

Alright people, it's time for... real life socializing If you are around/in Birmingham and would like to join some other Thumbs for some drinks, we have a plan! On the: 23/07 (a Saturday!) - probably in the evening? At: Probably some pub? (I have suggestions!) We have 3 (three!) confirmed* presences already, but the more the merrier! *by confirming your presence you agree to Terms and Conditions
  10. I just wanted to reinforce that what those guys were doing is incredibly sleazy even without the getting-kids-into-gambling aspect! I know we all know that, I'd just like to make it clear that this is not only a "think of the children!" scenario. Also, I don't see a problem with the gambling by itself, but if one of the big sports betting websites started a series of videos where people discover their site and go on to win huge prizes without disclosing those are ads, they'd be in all sorts of trouble. It gets ugly when a potentially harmful industry like gambling meets the complete lack of regulation of social media/youtube.
  11. HELP: Attempted upgrade of PC gone wrong

I think a good PSU in this range should be more than enough if you don't have a monster of a video card (or SLI stuff), but as clyde mentioned, there's a number of wattage calculators out there!
  12. HELP: Attempted upgrade of PC gone wrong

Maybe the power requirements for your new setup are bigger than the old one and sending your PSU over some cliff? It's the only thing I could think of. It's a difficult one to check, though.
  13. Recently completed video games

I just played/finished Thirty Flights of Loving and Gravity Bone yesterday for the first time! I know, I'm years late. They're really good! Also, I had them on my wishlist forever without ever knowing about the Idle Thumbs connection, so it was a strange (and exciting!) surprise running into the Thumbs logo.
  14. [RELEASE] The Eyes of Luigi

Hey! I'm late but I would just like to say how much I enjoy everything in this game (especially the VO work!).
  15. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

I just came back from vacation but wanted to submit something. The result is the most half-assed entry possible: https://medium.com/@erickratamero/space-boss-the-lord-of-space-draft-5a03d069ad23#.tr7munp4b
  16. Pre-paid travel cards

Visa has a similar service called TravelMoney (MasterCard has something similar as well), I think (at least in the UK and back in Brazil) you can get it from most foreign exchange places. They work in any ATM with Visa/MasterCard logos, which at least in Europe tends to be most of them, and also for payments anywhere you could pay with a normal credit/debit card.
  17. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

I might end up doing something small on Twine or play with some visual landscapes in Processing for this if I can find the time, motivation and ideas for that
  18. Thoughts on Ultrabooks?

I have a XPS13 that's almost 2 years old now, mainly because it's the only laptop which offers customer service for Linux machines. Other than eventually getting fairly hot and noisy when under a large load, I have no complaints at all, it's my main work machine (which involves some light simulation software) and was my only gaming option for about 6 months. It won't run anything very heavy, but it's a solid, well-built and beautiful machine.
  19. UK Thumbs

if I didn't know that leaving the EU is a stupid decision in almost every way, I'd be tempted to support it just because this horrible government is pushing hard for Remain.
  20. Phones

I am still very happy with my 2nd generation Moto G. It's fast enough to be responsive (almost) all the time, it has a micro-SD slot, it's cheap, it's fairly resistant, it comes with virtually no bloatware. It's a very solid choice if you don't need to have the latest top-of-the-line thing.
  21. We probably have enough people for a West Midlands Idle Drink already (EGX is coming!)
  22. You were 100% right! It's in one of the "gameplay options". Thanks, 2K! (I've promptly changed my nickname to Big Dog)
