My #1 complaint is grocery shopping. Having to get a taxi to grab some groceries is so stupid.

Of course, anything I said is not true when it comes to very select major metropolitan areas, where public transportation works. But I'll never wrap my head around huge cities where everyone needs a car (as your Dallas example, or LA).
-
Of course, you'd probably need a car if living in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere in Europe. But you can live perfectly well in any urban area without a car, no matter the size, which is absolutely not true in the US. It just so happens that public transport in general sucks here, and cities tend to be much more spread out. I do think those things are the consequence of a car culture, not the cause.

That's the thing I've been finding the most difficult to deal with when living in the US: not having a car is a major pain here. I never owned one, my driver's license expired years ago and I never bothered renewing it, but living in a major city in Brazil and pretty much anywhere in Europe without a car was absolutely fine. Here it's a hassle to get anything done.

VGCW (http://www.twitch.tv/bazza87) is the kind of thing that I can feel myself becoming more stupid when I watch, but it's SO MUCH FUN

Now I can't imagine how they've done a Demo Derby without Jeff. You can call him negative and cynical as much as you like, but very few people know about the last 25 years of this industry as much as the guy.

Dan reminds me a lot of my best friend in high school. He was in equal parts brilliant and infuriating, one of those people who will kick your ass at pretty much anything, do amazing stuff but answer every question in a History exam with "slaves" and ask for all directions to be given in relation to the supermarket across the street from where he lived. That being said, he comes across as much more thoughtful and reasonable on Danswers, which makes me think that a lot of the time he's just playing stuff up for laughs.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I'm completely addicted to A Sunny Day in Glasgow's album from last year. -
I think it will take me a while to be any decent at combat, so I'll probably just stick to courier/trading for a while. For now I'll stay in my solo game as well, and eventually move to PvE. It's the first game I buy at full price since maybe Age of Empires II, so I have all the incentive in the world to give it a fair shake. Thanks a lot!

So I've started a solo game, played for about 20 minutes and felt completely overwhelmed by everything. Do you guys have any resource you'd recommend to someone who's just started to play?

God. Can't imagine the feeling. I didn't get a mutagenesis working for 3 months, it was totally my fault and I felt like shit. It would have been 10 times worse if it was someone else's fault, I think.

There's also the U.S.S. Millicent Kent, part of one of my favourite scenes of the book.

So I'm not a native English speaker, but at some point around 6 years ago I decided to try for it and ordered a paperback copy. The Wardine section right off the bat, and then the yrstruly section almost made me drop it enterily but boy, am I glad I didn't. For the amount of times I had heard this book described as "challenging", I've found the read relatively straightforward in terms of vocabulary at least (maybe having a maths/engineering background helped there, since DFW tends to borrow lots of words from that, just like Pynchon does). I'm now on my third read, this time reading the Brazilian Portuguese translation that just came out last year. I find it very difficult to articulate what exactly it is that I love about Infinite Jest; it just feels right. That being said, yes, I'd say it's a male-centric book. Joelle and Kate Gompert seem to be the only female characters that get fully constructed. I would have loved some vignette from an Avril Incandenza POV, even though I understand why it is that we don't get any.

I wasn't expecting it as well. Not sure exactly how it was unlocked, though, story-wise it didn't seem connected to anything I've done in the previous runs. The north pole stuff has a nice plot, but it's not so great in terms of gameplay. Since I don't really care too much about the gameplay on 80 Days, I enjoyed it a lot.

New options have started opening up for me after some trips. I've completed 4 now, and just now I've got a second option for leaving London. As for making it on time, it's not really that relevant, but using the Trans-Siberian made me complete it in 60 days, and there's a slightly broken way of making it in roughly 40 days without really going around the world. All my journeys have been absolutely great, there was very, very little overlap between them.

That damn thing has text equivalent to 6 mid-sized novels. I think no one will ever 100% that bastard. (I did get some easter egg-y stuff already, but no idea how much is still left. )

80 Days. Multiple times. (as much as you can say you've "completed" it, of course.)

Hi there! I'm exactly 23 minutes into the first Idle Thumbs podcast I've ever listened to, decided to check the forums in the meantime and it seems the kind of place I'll be spending my procrastinating hours into. Anyway, hi! I'm Erick, born and raised in Brazil but living in the US for the next 2 months, after which I'll go back... to England. I'm working on my PhD and studying for a living is great. I love games and it's just so difficult to find a place to discuss them properly! I'm looking forward to being a part of this community.
