@eRonin Maybe you can help me with Death Mountain then:

      Reveal hidden contents

I've gotten as far as trying to rescue the guy who got stuck in a cave up there, but I can't seem to get the rocks out of the way to get at him. I couldn't figure out what to do :/

    Spoiler

You can change the direction of the nearby cannon by hitting the lever (I thought I had to use magnesis for a long time and couldn't think of anything else!)

  2.

Well this is exciting. I should go back and watch that GDC presentation in its entirety before I check this out as well.

ALSO: Making my way up Death Mountain; the frame-rate on Wii U was just atrocious with an entire second of frames skipping in some cases. Then the volcano erupted and the Wii U just couldn't handle all the particles and actually hard-locked, lol. The framerate has been fine for me inside the divine beasts though! I've been enjoying all of them; though the Death Mountain one wasn't as exciting.

As @BigJKO said in my chat; this is truly the Wii U's swan song, because my Wii U will melt by the time I finish the game.

Without being specific, somebody just 'sang' me the Calamity Ganon story in rhyming couplets and it was godawful! Is it intentional? The writing everywhere else is very good.

    Example:

      Reveal hidden contents

Divine Beast, Guardian, princess and knight

Their plan to rout Ganon was looking airtight.

this segment hurt my inside. Doesn't help that we've already been exposed to this story already at length!

  4. Thumbs_readers is the one more people use, but most folks just stream to other bigger communities with more viewership anyway. I originally made idle_thumbs but decided I didn't want to make it seem like it was affiliated with the actual Idle Thumbs folks, so I made thumbs_readers, and there doesn't seem to be a way to delete a community right now. In general the communities feature seems half-baked. In other twitch news though; they did finally add playlists to stream archives, so that's nice.

Sounds like the horse name character allowance is long enough to have "Shadowfax"!

The maximum is 9 characters so if I find a white horse you can bet I'm calling it Shadowfax!

Anyway since you asked what I liked about the game...

-The game's quest system mostly comprises paying attention to an NPC as they describe a location or direction; and sometimes even something cryptic, which gives you enough context to finish it without ever relying on a quest marker

-The combat keeps you on your toes at all times because even the weakest enemy can use their environment to their advantage to pin you down/surround you/hit you with an explosive barrel or even your own bombs, as you've seen

-horses are actually good, heck that noise

-the world constantly rewards you for poking around in every nook and cranny

-navigating the world relies on you identifying the topology of the land rather than most other games letting you simply take a straight line to your next destination

-even the basic NPCs have interesting things to say that often give you more context into something you may have been pondering about the world

-the shrine trials are amazing and the freedom you have with your rune abilities means you can often cheese them in hilarious ways

-your rune abilities, especially stasis and magnesis, just own in general

-sneaking up on enemy camps and stealing all their weapons without them waking up is 10/10

I've been trying to tag this thread Far Cry 2 and I can't work out how to do it. Maybe only the thread creator can?

Anyway I've genuinely seen comparisons to Far Cry 2 in how dedicated it is to creating emergent stories, including stories where you do something that turns out to be a very bad idea. 'Throwing a bomb and have the moblin knock it back at you with its shield' is a grenade-rolling-down-the-hill moment that feels even more earned because of course moblins with shields should be able to whack bombs away.

  7. I got excited at the notion that Link can get a dog as a pet in this game lol but I have definitely seen a dog in my playthrough so far...Didn't have a chance to interact with it just yet!

Also regarding Wii U/Switch versions: not gonna lie I'm constantly disappointed in the relative weakness of Nintendo's hardware and definitely feel like they're handicapping themselves. Zelda looks beautiful regardless and I lose myself so easily in this game, but the framedrops and some of the janky textures definitely take me out of those moments.

  8. In my circle of friends I'm definitely the one who is most critical of Nintendo. This is because I even know what Nintendo is up to these days...most of them are pretty ignorant because Nintendo doesn't do the best job at communicating things to people who aren't already subscribed to them. I bought Zelda on the Wii U because I don't think the Switch is currently good value, nor do I agree with a whole slew of things that they are doing. Having said that I don't agree with lots of things other companies do. In the end I like games and I like playing them so I can't just boycott every platform I disagree with (depending on severity of course I will refuse to give certain companies my money).

Anyway so like Zelda is really good I played it for 7 hours and I want to play more but now I have a headdache and I should probably cool it a bit.

  9. So the preview embargo lifted on this game recently, and the various outlets seem to be unanimously in agreement that this is an extremely impressive game that many are calling the best Zelda of all time. I've only read two previews, and don't intend to read more, though there are still a lot of embargoed elements of the game so these previews don't go into spoiler territory at all. I've linked the two that I've read here:

    https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article/breath-of-the-wild-is-shaping-up-to-be-a-beautiful-zelda-adventure

What is interesting from the Polygon preview is its discussion of how difficult the game is, which is a sentiment shared by other folks I've seen comment on Twitter/other forums. The open nature of the game means you have to pay close attention to where you are wandering, lest you enter a zone filled with strong monsters that you are ill-equipped to deal with. There are no more hearts that drop in the wild, and instead it seems healing is done entirely through eating food, and more elaborate recipes that you cook will let you recover more hearts or give you a temporary boost in health. The dynamic weather system adds extra challenge through the temperature gauge, which freezes Link to death if you are not wearing enough clothing, or thunderstorms that strike you if you are wearing metal armour. Despite being such a huge game, however, evidently the game has a far shorter "tutorial" than recent 3D Zelda games, allowing you to start roaming free within the first few minutes. I enjoyed the Waypoint preview for its paragraphs briefly touching on the history of the game franchise and the author relating his own childhood to Miyamoto's.

The main criticism that I've seen echoed is the weapon durability system, which seems to be a slight nuisance. When I played the demo last month, the early weapons you can pick up will break very quickly; within 5-10 hits. Hopefully you can quickly find weapons that last a lot longer, and I hope there is also a way to repair weapons. The lack of touch screen to do inventory management is also going to bother me a little, but I imagine folks who aren't accustomed to playing the Wii U HD remakes of Zelda games won't really miss it.

  10. Snipperclips is US$20 I think so it's not a full-price game. I'm definitely picking it up when I get my Switch. I wrote up my own thoughts a few pages back but I really really enjoyed how much freedom the game gives you to do the puzzles. I was kinda worried it being a nintendo game would mean the solutions are kind of pushed at you. (I realise it is an indie game that was shown off a few years ago and now found a home on the Switch)
