  1. Its beginning to look a lot like GOTY

To copy and paste my 2014 list: Bravely Default Demo (3DS, 2014) 2048 (iOS, 2014) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PC, 2014) The Banner Saga (PC, 2014) Broken Age (PC, 2014) Bravely Default (3DS, 2014) Dead State (PC, 2014) The Last of Us: Left Behind (PS3, 2014) Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition (PC, 2014) Titanfall (PC, 2014) BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea - Episode Two (PC, 2014) Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS3, 2014) Dark Souls II (PC, 2014) WATCH_DOGS (PC, 2014) Nidhogg (PC, 2014) Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC, 2014) Always Sometimes Monsters (PC, 2014) Dark Souls II: Crown of the Sunken King (PC, 2014) The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection (PC, 2014) Dark Souls II: Crown of the Old Iron King (PC, 2014) WWE SuperCard (iOS, 2014) Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PC, 2014) Sunless Sea (PC, 2014) Hack ‘n’ Slash (PC, 2014) Valkyria Chronicles (PC, 2014) Massive Chalice (PC, 2014) I am also still hoping to afford at least one of either Persona Q, Far Cry 4, or Game of Thrones before the year is out. 2014 is definitely the first year in a while without a major standout! Even though my relationship with it soured harshly by the end due to getting humiliated in PvP and hating the DLC, I'd probably have to go with Dark Souls II, but fair dues to Wolfenstein.
  2. How do you organize your steam library?

All I ever do is prune my Installed list and let my Games list sit wild and invisible in the background. However, I'd love it if Steam would incorporate this sort of thing for the Wishlist, because that I actually do have a sort of system for (since you ask, my list is subdivided into three categories in descending order: Games I've Never Played Which I Eagerly Want, Games I've Played And Enjoyed Elsewhere Which I'll Eventually Repurchase On Steam, Games I've Never Played And Have Reservations About But Which I'm Still Interested In For The Right Price, and titles are organized within those categories by preference; I used to also add genre to this as well, but it was a mess). Which isn't to say I'm lax in my organization otherwise, because I am a man who knows how to Google Drive:
  3. MO MONEY MO THUMBS - PAYDAY 2

If anyone wants to spend an hour pursuing a doctorate in misery with me, hit me up on Steam.
  4. MO MONEY MO THUMBS - PAYDAY 2

Two words: cheev ohs. Don't stop until you curse Big Oil with a thousand lifetimes of hatred.
  5. Oh, congratulations on the first game. Wish I'd realized it was on, I would have spectated.
  6. General Video Game Deals Thread

Evil Within is down to $16.32 on GMG with their current voucher, YEHWO3-8WN62G-KZ7AVT. Code's good for all their current deals, which also includes the new Wolfenstein at the same price - but you should have already played that. Disapproving stare.
  7. Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

I'm sorry, but do you really think that Steve Gaynor is the Thumb most associated with cyberpunk these days? I can't even read the word "cyberpunk" anymore without changing my accent.
  8. Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

I don't follow pop music enough to contribute meaningfully to this conversation, although I find it fascinating. (I say that with ignorance, please be assured, not comical haughtiness!) I have been learning more and more about Taylor Swift today due to the latest episode and this thread. I watched both of her 1989 music videos (haha, she was born in 1989, I'm going to shoot myself in my stupid head) and thought Blank Space's message was "Women are nuts!" and then had to shut off Shake It Off halfway through because the cultural appropriation and the image of Taylor crawling through a tunnel of twerking black women with the curiosity of a nineteenth century missionary was just too much. (To note: my first ever exposure to Taylor Swift was finding her MySpace page years ago had a small banner on it saying "Republicans do it better.") I wish I had a clearer picture from either of these of where she stood as a virginal contrast to other female pop stars, but then her Wikipedia page offered me this insight, which you shouldn't read if you don't feel like throwing up right now: So that's good, I'm always looking for my singers to be described by withered conservative husks as "unspoiled" with "maidenhood intact." Anyway, music is a nightmare, here is a picture:
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

My favorite KotakuInAction quote of the day, from this elegant deconstruction of academia:
  10. Totally irrelevant, but I think it's "out of."
  11. So, Reyturner's first session is currently scheduled for two days from now. Unless I missed something from before I was put into that group, has there been word of whether or not we should have read any specific materials or have characters made by then, or will this session be for creating characters?
  12. This is actually some problematic stuff for me. Sonic's weird canon makes Knuckles a descendant of an ancient tribal race and he is notoriously designated for having (awesome) hip hop character themes (and level themes in Sonic Adventure 2), so transforming him into a comic relief goofball is not just some move you can make indelicately.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This Jack Thompson slash Sarkeesian Effect crossover is gaining a huge amount of momentum very quickly but it should be noted that, for all intents and purposes, even though Jack Thompson is saying exactly what they have been, the moderate and authentic face of GamerGate will disavow any genuine allegiance with him and Davis Aurini. This is the sort of thing I care about knowing before I go all in on rhetoric claiming they're bedfellows now.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, their new interest in That Dragon, Cancer blew up on Twitter last night. I don't know how much traction this #Op will get since it's so easily viewed as maniacal, but I was taken by the image used to begin the thread on 8chan. Vivian James has been discussed here, hasn't she? The point of bringing attention to that image now is, until I got the full resolution version to link in this post this morning, it was impossible to see the tiny text at the bottom mentioning James' origins in the The Fine Young Capitalists' Indiegogo - only the relatively giant text at the top reading "SUPPORTING REAL WOMEN IN GAMES. BECAUSE WE'RE MISOGYNISTS, RIGHT?" - which, if you're not totally familiar with her history, can't see the minuscule invocation of TFYC, and only know her as the de facto GamerGate mascot (although obviously GamerGate will pedantically refute allegations that she is), bears the obvious implication that Vivian-kun represents the aforementioned "real women in games" as more than a mascot for charity but as who they should be in character.
  15. anime

I'm sure anime thread regulars can offer more profound opinions than this, but as far as I know Madoka Magica is pretty essential viewing when it comes to the past five years in anime. (I'd be shocked if it hasn't been previously discussed here, as a matter of fact.) If you are totally unspoiled to the show, I don't want to say too much more because I can see a lot of the satisfaction of watching it coming from discovering the ways in which it diverges from traditional magical girl stories. The first few episodes may be a struggle for that reason, in fact, as you wait for it to subvert expectations - but I'm not at all literate in this genre and by the end I still found the story extremely satisfying. I will say that to call the art breathtaking is an understatement, and that the - however you'd refer to them - "action" sequences in the show are a creative joy to see in motion. As to how qualified I am to speak to how exploitative it is, I don't know. I couldn't last one episode of Kill la Kill because I thought it was too gross. I can't remember any particular parts of Madoka being problematic. The movie is bizarre, though. Not in a good way. Just my opinion. Feel free to stop with the show.
  16. Video games and Influences

It is. It's hard not to fall in love with him after District 9, for me at least, so it's always a little bitter to see him in such weird, bad projects like this, the Oldboy remake, and the shitty movie the District 9 director made after District 9. (He was also in Europa Report, which was just weird but not necessarily bad.) I hope he's just choosing roles that interest him incautiously, because I find him an incredibly charming actor, even in this.
  17. Feminism

Apparently, Time removed "feminist" from its word poll. Or, as KotakuInAction put it: SJW bullies get Time to remove "Feminist" from their poll about which word should be banned in 2015 even though it crushed other options
  18. Video games and Influences

Dumb concept or not, that video is incredibly well made. I'd have to watch it again to see if there were any spots hide cuts to fake the single take after the halfway point, but I don't want to ruin the magic. I guess I had low expectations going in if this a professional team which has already shot the entire feature length film.
  19. Valkyria Chronicles

I thought it might be a joke, but there's also that blank space in the R&D menu and why shouldn't it be a biotech lab?
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

By far the hottest topic on KotakuInAction today, incomparably so, is this article about Matt Taylor's apology with a short, embedded video of him crying during its delivery. The thread title on the KotakuInAction subreddit? Don't worry, though, the mods had the perspective to tag the link as "Kinda off topic."
  21. Valkyria Chronicles

So if you can replace their talents and they warm up to each other regardless of their Likes, is there any reason to choose one character over another and not just pick the most sugoi senpai or kawaii kohai?
  22. Valkyria Chronicles

Are all of these people supposed to suck at first? Do their shitty potentials eventually get replaced by good ones?
  23. General Video Game Deals Thread

If I could spare $40 right now, I'd buy this $50 Steam Wallet Card on eBay for 20% off with the promo code CPLAY10. This post brought to you by Best Buy.
  24. Feminism

I don't think I agree with that interpretation. On the poll page Time seems to be indicting "the word" for no other reason than celebrity fatigue (surprise, you write for Time), as they might have a decade ago with liberalism in general as a supercilious Hollywood cause. Beginning the entry by stating that you have "nothing against" feminism is akin to saying "I have no problem with black people, but ..." It shows a profound lack of empathy for why the amount of discussion on feminism is necessary, not a higher-minded critique of its cultural misuse.
  25. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

With the influx of PUA types, I'm surprised they don't go with "players."
