  1. wrong thread

    Sorry, wrong thread.
  2. I think the one thing that your map misses Problem Machine is that you can see areas from each other too. So even if the demon ruins and giants tomb don't have paths from to one another, you can see one from the other, and that's a recurring part of the game. That's a very big component in how the world feels, which is what mattered more to me than the literal available paths.
  3. I'd be interested in what about Bloodborne makes Nick think it could be his favourite. I've never played, and he mostly talked about why it fell short of that mark, rather than what potential was encouraging him. Also, there is no correct way to play and I enjoy seeing how Nick approaches Dark Souls. But he might be interested in a let's play of it by someone called Kay, if he hasn't heard of it. She basically approached it in exactly the opposite way, mostly blind and still manages to notice all the tiny hints that are in the game to figure it out. I'm watching and I'm very surprised that she can grasp parts of the game I had to look up or ask friends about. I highly recommend checking it out for a bit at least (though it is a slower pace than Nick), it's fascinating to watch.
  4. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Yeah I'm all in for any console based RPGs that I'm interested in. Skyrim's not my style, but I'm on for Xenoblade. If Fallout or the Witcher were on it I'd be up for those too.
  5. Night in the Woods

Yeah, that was great. I can't speak to the real life experience of a rust belt town at all, but in universe it was clear that the characters comment on it because it so clearly permeates the whole town and their lives.
  6. Night in the Woods

Finished this earlier in the week, playing with my girlfriend and we both loved it. In the middle it felt a bit too slow, but then happened and afterwards it balanced the pace a lot better. To be fair, it was maybe partly because I spent so much time seeking out people to talk to and things to do. The characters were all great, and I kind of want to replay to learn more about Gregg and Angus (if I can hang out with him more). I mostly hung out with Bea, because her relationship with Mae was really interesting, but I was surprised how much that route taught me about Mae herself. Very happy to be a backer of this, it came out wonderful.
  7. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

It hadn't occurred to me before but lots of PC indie games are trying to do local co-op, and the Switch is a very good way of introducing that to a console and getting people into it without it feeling like a big deal for them to give some games a go.
  8. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I had a similar experience with that Shantae game. I think having discrete levels really disrupts the idea of making it a metroidvania, so it just felt like a game where I had to constantly walk backwards through levels. Plus I got tired of seeing the same oversexualised female body type everywhere.
  9. Actually the difference between PAL and NTSC framerates is 0.024 (at least today it is). I have no idea why NTSC needs to be 23.976... But it is.
  10. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I agree about Ulti, but the thing about Resi is you can't just shorten it to "Res" cause that's too far removed from the actual phrase to be properly readable. At least to my ears.
  11. Oh cool, Steve's rebooting a new podcast too?
  12. Night in the Woods

I kickstarted it and haven't played at all but I already love it.
  13. I have a stub of a response there which is that I think it's hard to claim they're not a voice for an enlightened author when they're the singular moral authority. Showing individual characters' moral views to contrast and compare them is a fine goal if you have more than one to make it abundantly clear that there's non canonical worldview you're putting forward. But if you just show one angle, it gets taken as the angle.
  14. The Leftovers (HBO)

Oh I missed the part of your post that indicated you already were watching. But yes, exactly that. I'm not sure if it's meant to be relateable but the dad just doesn't work for me as a character and gets an even bigger spotlight in season 2.
  15. The Leftovers (HBO)

I watched it with my girlfriend and overall enjoyed season 1 but really fell off season 2. I think we stopped 20 minutes before the end of the finale and neither of us went back to it. I agree that it's generally character driven, but I think season 2 suffers from being further injected with the mysticism that's 'not the point of the show'. There's a significant magic plotline in 2 that I'd rather not be there because it seems to just drive some shocking unexpected points and narrative twisting. I liked a lot of the characters, but the show focused too much on the American dad trying to hold himself and his family together. It was a case of the creators focusing on different characters than I would have, so I just got frustrated with the priests airtime. I'd definitely recommend trying season 1 at least, I fully enjoyed that even with the above complaints.
  16. Can confirm, spacejam.com is still live. (or should I say www.warnerbros.com/archive/spacejam/movie/jam.htm)
  17. I legitimately thought the cast was just getting confused and that the one who said "Exit stage left, stage right even" was actually the Pink Panther. As the conversation continued and I then googled his picture, I had a very slow descent into realising that the true fool was me.
  18. Into the Breach (new game from the FTL folks)

It looks more to me like a Pacific Rim mod of XCOM I had been asking for, I hope my expectations aren't setting me up for a fall.
  19. Other podcasts

You had me at Jermaine Clement.
  20. Casablanca (1942)

I had a similar experience to Ben of just being like "Ok?" when there's plenty of old movies I've enjoyed (love me some George Melies) but I want to rewatch it again and see if it ignites any new sparks. I have a strong suspicion that I'm missing a lot of the cultural context though by not knowing that much about life during World War 2. I find I often have that problem with movies assuming more knowledge than I have because it's expected to be ubiquitous, especially if they're American or an older movie. It's not a fault with them really, I just think I'm not in the group the film was intended to play to.
  21. Into the Breach (new game from the FTL folks)

I'm a big fan of "Available: When it's finished."
  22. I had heard America on the Waypoint podcast but Patrick wasn't sure so I guess I should've hedged my bets there. And yes, I also like the Irish ladder man in DS2 who sounds like a bit of a boyo. That's all cool info, and indeed I know what Oirish is.
  23. I was going to post that I've started doing the same as of last week. I had a hankering for Dark Souls after many hours of Nick. I've only finished the game once but I'm still not one for replaying games that much normally, so I made up some rules to challenge myself to try different parts of Dark Souls and get more out of it. I have 32 different potential limitations and I randomly pick one to put upon myself each time I beat a boss. I also randomly roll which stat to level up when doing so. It's been fun and weird. I had to play with no estus (the healing item) last week and it killed me. Then just the other day I got "Kill every NPC I meet" and after a really good fight with a blacksmith that had amazing wrestling moves I got crushed by our old friend Siegmeyer (the onion knight who says "Hmmm" a lot).
  24. The teaser was great. If it helps, I intend to use the acronym IiT. (it wont help)
