This is probably where I can put this... has anyone else used Tinder? Me and my girlfriend got it out of curiosity to see what it's like and it has a weirdly nice game feel and system design. It's a meeting people app (seems like it's mostly for dating (seems like it's mostly for hook ups)) where you're presented with a picture of them and limited information. You can tap in to look at some more photos and more information (if they chose to provide it) before deciding if you want to either swipe left to reject them or swipe right to choose them. If you choose them AND they choose you, you get a match and you can start talking in a chat app, but that's a much less interesting part. I really like* the loop of taking in information, rapidly judging it and making a concrete binary decision and seeing if you successfully get a match later. It makes me want to emulate it in some bizarre game where maybe you can skim through a bunch of profiles to recruit soldiers for an upcoming battle, hoping the scant peek was enough for you to make a good judgement call when the recruitment and battle simulations run. * I also think it's a kind of terrible thing because you're judging people's worth on a tiny impression... ok actually maybe that's what most people do but I'm the opposite in dating so this feels weird.

Sweet, new gaming podcast! I enjoyed the Gay Witch Aesthetic. And I appreciate some good cover art. One thing, though you might be aware of it, I would love better sound quality on the cast. I'll keep listening regardless, that'd just be a nice bonus.

I think the point though is that it's not that respectful to emulate something you don't entirely understand.

Everybody's ben there with their games and dan that so I don't think you can claim plagiarism. The game was good! Definitely approve of it being short and easy so I actually finished it, unlike most adventure games.

I've thought about this a lot too, and also the thought that there are probably improvements that could be made and potentially better systems, but ultimately this is just a difficult issue with no good solution. Even with massively vast surveillance of everything, intent must be judged and the footage must be interpreted. Objects are more reliable than people with their memories and biases but what facts they represent is still a fluid thing, as the cell tower evidence demonstrates. No matter what, people are judges and people don't make perfect systems.

I'm usually late to playing games and this thread seems to vindicate that, there's no games mentioned here that I have played and would designate GOTY. Transistor I did play and like a lot but it was covered in a weird mist of difficult reading that I couldn't clear away enough to fully grasp that game. One PC game that WAS from this year and I enjoyed a lot was the Fall. A sort of puzzle/adventure game? It just was a really solid experience... though only the first part is out so it might not count. 3 GOTYs I have are Android based since I played a lot on my phone in the latter half of the year. Desert Golf, Hitman Go and Monument Valley all demonstrated just how gooood a phone game can be. Everyone's already talked about mechanics of these Thumb favourites to death but just the way you touch a screen to get results is handled so nicely it does make me think I'd love more games with touch controls (as long as they're not real time/actiony)

That name makes me think it's like the giving tree but with a lot more business sense. -
I broke a hole in my skull by running into a window. (I was playing with a wheelbarrow)

Idle Thumbs 187: Half a Brain
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Oh shit I never noticed that, I thought it was just meant to be a cool shot (and it was). Related to the cast, I'm starting to wonder if I really want AAA games to tackle social issues. It seems like even the relatively good ones come with caveats and goofy stuff. Maybe games studios should shed attempt at social commentary until they can make a good story without that stuff. But maybe I'm enforcing a false dichotomy? It just seems like involving social issues is seen as progress and that can turn people complacent instead of making real improvements. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 8: The Last Evening

Yeah, as demonstrated in the mill she is a stoic person. She stands still and thinks in a burning mill so she can figure things out. Pete's display is presumably going to seem silly to someone who's that emotionally controlled. -
(I meant racist of me to be anti american and presume it's an issue there more than one other countries)

Twin Peaks Rewatch 8: The Last Evening
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
My read on this was always that Lucy had concerns about Andy being a father, seeing as how he was the most bumbling and useless member of the force who has repeatedly flubbed his different duties up until now. Then he performs his job so well he potentially saves the sheriff's life with a quick draw and accurate shot. Aside from showing off his competence, this is a pretty significant development from his previous character and could show that he can rise to the challenge of bettering himself, which is obviously necessary if he is going to be a father. -
For the record, in Ireland the concept of titles denoting classes isn't really a thing, but we definitely still have distinct classes. And I do agree that people just expect social immobility. I see a lot of TV on this side of the Atlantic depicting the fact that people are resigned to their fate, those that try to break out are dreamers and when they succeed they're an exception with talent, perseverance and luck on their side, not proof of what sheer determination can get you.

And they have also repeatedly demonstrated that they're willing to rely on the community and fight fires later. -
I'm aware this might be a racist presumption, but is the voting on the basis of how wealthy you expect to be a phenomenon in other countries? It feels like a particularly American sentiment and it doesn't seem like people do that here, most people openly criticise when taxes for richer people are disproportionately cut. But maybe I'm just blind to how it works here.

Facebook is not afraid to make political statements.
-
I know, and it's not easy to just dump the added taxes on people now and assume it'll be fine. I was just pointing out the irony in thinking when people uncompromisingly feel that way about wanting low taxes.
-
Couldn't you use coloured lights and just use the code to access the colour value on the lights?
-
The thing is, the idea of taxes are that you shouldn't have that student debt in the first place. Or at least, it should be way lower. Taxes are supposed to drive down cost of living for people across the board, as long as they're used well.

It's clearly fabricated! Those weren't the real devs, just fakes created by the feminist illuminati. -

Visually seeing the Idle Thumbs crew is still weird for me. Did anyone else think Chris's head looked 'photoshopped' on? -
I think so, yeah. (disclosure: I had to Google Paula Deen to check on this). A media presence has an effect on people and I'd rather be mindful of it. Also I mainly felt like responding to call out the idea that social issues are important but food is not. I think that's not a good mindset (the best cure for anything is preventative measures) and I feel like this stuff reinforces the mindset.
