  1. Speaking personally about Dragon Age Origins (the only one I've played), I agree with the sentiment. And the difference between DA and Dota or Day Z is that the mechanics of DA's fighting don't appeal to me at all. In Dota or Day Z the mechanics of the game involve a lot of down time but those enhance the mechanics of what you enjoy in those games In DA I just wanted to roam the world and talk to people for story stuff. Having the game geared towards balancing that with story was making it drag for me, so much so I just got a mod that bypassed all fighting for me. That meant I didn't really do any more fighting, strategising or inventory management. (except to find key or quest items that might lead to something) Essentially, there is a difference between a slow paced experience you're willing to dive into and an experience that moves slowly because it's giving you more of something than you really want.
  2. General Video Game Deals Thread

That game makes some interesting lofty promises... I'm watching it now. Such a shame when a game has a blatant lack of art direction though. It really undersells it. :/
  3. Fantasy Finale XV

Sounds like another contender for a Baby Got Backstory...
  4. Feminism

Also often the reason said in favour of using those other words is that it's more inclusive, but that means it's trying to welcome in people who are being resistant just to the word. These are not open minded people that can have a productive discovery of how sexism works.
  5. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

That deep dive must be about a twentieth of the movie's total length?
  6. Its beginning to look a lot like GOTY

That's true but I thought most players stopped caring about prestige after they figured out the game.
  7. Recently completed video games

I got Shovel Knight for Christmas! (my family had Christmas at the weekend so no I didn't finish it in just one day... I finished it in 4). It was good solid platformy fun. Quite challenging, especially if I play through collecting all the stuff. Which I might, I'm not one for doing that normally though. There's nothing really new about it, it is all out a retro celebration and just well put together. Had some nice light touches on the story, which is all I want from a game like this. Also this was the first 2D platformer game that actually felt like it was bad on keyboard. That was a new experience for me. It was mostly fine, but the relic activation button combo was finnicky, especially in mid air and that made the phasing challenge level more awkward than it ought to be. I thought they were just meant to be super hard until I did the dust fist one and it was barely any trouble. Admittedly I might just be using it wrong or the controls might be dodgy regardless of whether I use keyboard or controller. It's just a minor gripe, the only one I had!
  8. I'm definitely supportive of Bioware continuing to do this stuff and getting better at it, because as you said it's not an easy choice. There was a reaction that was annoyed at the proportion of non straight romance options. I don't remember what the numbers were but it was pretty ridiculous to make a fuss over. In contrast it is super easy to just walk the line between and present something that's controversial to as few people as possible. (ie If they had one queer romance option then they would probably get some flak for not having more, but it'd be passable to a lot of people) That's why I'm all for it. It's a tough thing to really run with so they ought to get credit for it. ...though it's always possible to do better with this stuff. Like Danielle said on the cast, Bioware has a lack of queer writers. I just think it's definitely a case where you give credit when it seems like a real effort was made and then you can just point out what more can be done too. EDIT: I forgot to say that they definitely weren't so hot with it before. I played Femshep and the fact that there were more lesbians than gay men didn't seem to come from a well motivated intention. They also did have a bisexual female-only race in the game where their existence is explicitly about... gathering genetic material. I hope they find some way to ditch that but having a whole playable race change is a tall order even if people weren't going to be pissy about 'SJW censorship'.
  9. Fantasy Finale XV

It's particularly egregious since it seems like the main party is a group of lads on a road trip. So if you're going to have a limited representation of women then you really ought to be more careful about it. (ideally just don't limit your representation of women)
  10. Its beginning to look a lot like GOTY

You can sorta play that way in Crusader Kings. Admittedly all the other people warring does make it hard to stay neutral...
  11. Crikey, It's Christmas (2014)!

Merry Thumbsmas! A season for all who love the Thumbs. (I'm afraid I'm intolerant of those who don't)
  12. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

A max level amiibo nearly won a Smash tournament. They're basically super good at dodging and timing I believe.
  13. Plug your shit

Ho ho ho. Why not celebrate Christmas with a super simple Android rhythm game that has nothing Christmassy about it at all? Assuming you haven't thought of any valid reasons, here's a link to just such a game I made. I made it as part of my one game a week project, so I'm aware it's pretty light on stuff and I'm still learning android so I might come back to it when I know what I'm doing!

  16. Playables of 2014

I also think this is great! I'm gonna post stuff when I'm down at my parents house and doing shit all. Also by then I should have another game, so yeah!
  17. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Yup, I got that last year and this year. I kept under the actual amount and doubt it'll ever be an issue but it's weird to think that some people are making enough in it that it's theoretically a business and being taxed.
  18. Idle Thumbs 189: Serious Ma'am

There is a little of that but to an extent it felt like there was a worthwhile conclusion to make in openly acknowledging that her mind had been changed and clearly racism was an issue because I feel like there are people who would've heard the episode and not really grasped what that means for society at large. And of course the people who are least likely to conclude this without having it explicitly unpacked are the people who need it done the most.
  19. Idle Santa 2014

Twig, did you send yourself as a gift?
  20. Life

I think there's a weird stigma idea that you're going there out of desperation because you've exhausted all other options, which is also related to the idea that the internet is less safe than real life and people can outright lie about their identities much easier so it's a risky option. It is partly a generational gap and also has reduced a lot as the internet has become a bigger part of people's lives (and therefore not an unusual last desperate option) but the mistrust of the internet still lingers across generations and not without justification. Though I always take the view that people who are particularly suspicious of anyone the internet are probably just being too trusting of people in real life.
  21. Idle Thumbs 189: Serious Ma'am

I got the impression that she avoided deep dives on them because they were authority figures and still alive. She mentions that the detectives involved essentially pushed away from being interviewed or giving comment and it seems like she didn't want to press that issue with them let alone the higher ups in the legal system. She may have considered reporting on them to some extent and ultimately declined to do it or maybe she dropped the angle immediately focusing on the case rather than the people.
  22. Twin Peaks Rewatch 10: Coma

I'm pretty sure he still did that, it was just a lot easier/less creepy to mold his own son.

Those are super sweet Synth! I can also see why you might have trouble with the studio system since it's pretty garbage and tuned to committee instead of individuals. And also games are hard to do with such a specific aesthetic compared to something with rounded off edges (unless you did a visual novel or something). ... I hope that all makes sense to you and not just me. I definitely second the illustrator approach. Like any art career it's a bit rough but I think it'd suit your style from what I saw.
