Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SuperBiasedMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
Oh I doubt DS3, but I'd love to be able to just play DS1 randomly when I feel like it. It's honestly just a pie in the sky wishlist of things I'd enjoy, not thinking about any of the logistics. Also realised another one, the Witcher. -
I consider it to be a headline used to goad people into reading an article they'd have no interest in if you described it less hyperbolically. So it could be that it's designed to enrage, or catch curiousity, or confuse. But no matter what, in retrospect the headline is making promises that the article doesn't fulfill.

Idle Thumbs 306: Nick Breckons: 1, Mackle: More
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think a small difference is that the story of Dark Souls is often described as incomprehensible by the people who didn't dig into any lore. I read Lord of the Rings and knew what happened. But I didn't follow the events I had done in Dark Souls without hearing about some of the undercurrent. Also I've been using this same username everywhere for a decade-ish now and it feels increasingly questionable in the given climate. Especially when I'm a randomer on someone's twitch channel, posting in chat. And I'm not finished the episode, so maybe this gets mentioned. But didn't this exact thing happen to Nick before, where he was mistaken for someone else and emailed an itinerary for a trip, leading to the Thumbs positing how he could still go. -

Any long form game I've had a passing interest in but haven't engaged with please. The Witness maybe, Dark Souls definitely, Farcry 2 of course. -
I want a Knife Wielding Stabbing Machine and Hooch detective show.

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

The Switch is slowly metamorphosising. Once the process is complete it will be ready to have the device inserted, turning it into a chainable supercomputer that will unlock the device's true potential. -
Important If True 7: Human Behavior
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Important If True Episodes
Amazing! For April 1st, Pixar made a fake trailer for A Bug's Life, pretending it's a real movie that came out years ago. They get so many details right, it even looks like an animated film of the time. -
It was and at the end of the Suffering Game I think Griffin does make these gestures, I just wish he did it more often and they weren't just minor detours before returning to the main path.

I think much shorter arcs would be more fun. Like if there wasn't one long running story over everything, and the individual arcs happening were entirely standalone (though setting/characters could carry over).

I like the pulpy storytelling, I'm actually in this show in spite of it being a McElboy thing because I'm not normally big on their humour. There's fun, silly twists that are entertaining and since I know multiple people who listen (including my girlfriend) it means that we can be surprised by it together. It's similar to playing the Zero Escape games, where there's a lot of narrative threads and lore wrapped up in itself, but it's fun to hear it untangled even if I don't think it makes a lot of sense or means anything.

I haven't listened to The The Adventure Zone Zone yet but the thing that's especially disappointing to me is that the 11th Hour opened up a lot by having it be a town where Griffin let the boys loose on it. Functionally it wasn't that different but it allowed an atmosphere where it didn't feel as though the boys were being shepherded down a corridor. Then wonderland was 100% the exact opposite, and it didn't work at all for me.

I second all of what Twig says. Despite being a bit disappointed with the current season relatively speaking, FatT is still my favourite podcast.
-
I am a little bit down on this season of FatT. I'm enjoying it a lot, but it's a significant drop from the highs of season 1 (my favourite season). I think the story has gotten heavy with all the mythology and backstory building up. I had kind of hoped they might be building to an ending. But it seems like they just finished this season, with more threads to continue. If it helps though, I suspect they'll start a new campaign soon. I do recommend trying 1. You can skip the first few episodes if you find the quality manageable after the first few, ropiest episodes.

Separately, now that it's the Max Fun pledge drive I have a question. What kind of commitment do you make when becoming a member? I couldn't see anywhere on the site if there was any kind of minimum/set period involved.

Passengers is a bland film with a very problematic romance that just wraps up light and fluffy. It's not worth seeing.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: open your eyes and die a lot
SuperBiasedMan replied to eRonin's topic in Video Gaming
My brother came over with his Switch and I got to try this out today and I'm surprised that it met and exceeded the hyped expectations. It just dumps you right into the world so fast, lets you loose to face real threats and find your own way. The moment of leaving the resurrection chamber and seeing the world out before me was incredible. The fighting is so good. I kept jokingly asking my brother if X thing from Dark Souls was in the game, and they all were, plus stuff like "Perfect dodges" that DS doesn't even have. The cooking was already fun and I liked having to prepare for a snowy trek up a mountain. As well as solving a tiny puzzle to cross a river. It's good to see there are snippets of puzzle design loose in the world and not just for secrets. I also had not realised the game straight up gave you a basic set of power ups at the very start. I had assumed I'd be going through 4 shrines with just the magnetic powers, but then I got almost the full set in my 1-2 hour playtime where I also wandered off into skull caves. Given the amount of things I accidentally set on fire with the arrow nocked in my bow, I also look forward to unlocking all the little pieces to how this game works. I'm so glad this is on a handheld because I can't imagine finding enough time to play this fully only sitting at a couch (in my case my computer desk, where my only screen is). Now I just need to wait for myself to cave and buy the Switch already. -
Idle Thumbs 303: Great Play Dad
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It might be apocryphal, but the original intention of O and X on the PS controllers was meant to be confirm and cancel respectively. After that proved to be an unnatural mapping that PS games flipped how they worked. -
Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SuperBiasedMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
Aw man, I hadn't thought of that before and now I may actually want to get a pro controller just for that purpose. -
I didn't seem to see any threads for this anywhere so I figured I could set one up! I've become a next level nerd and played my first game of D'n'D with some friends this year so I got into other games and started listening to pods about it. It seems real fun! Even if I'm just an enthusiastic baby who hasn't played many games. In particular I just discovered that there are a lot of 2 person games, so I want to find out about ones that I might be able to play with my brother who hasn't played any (that I'm aware of). Anyone got suggestions for 2 person games? Especially comedy ones that are welcoming to newbies like us, though we're both up for rules and systems. Also if people wanted to play some sort of game together here might be a place to talk about it (wink wink, nudge nudge) I got bored and made a Google Sheet of info you can add to or peruse for possible players: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aV2-k1dcpwmZmS0HOJ9-33GNyXSQ3SQ1hYfOCWLHyTY/edit?usp=sharing

Idle Thumbs BONUS: Ruination Online March 2017
SuperBiasedMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I like TF2 a lot, but only came to it when it was full of hats and money laundering. I wish I could've been part of the fresh release TF2 experience. -
Crypt of the Necrodancer is a very good merging of Rogue Likes and rhythm games that solves my problems with both. Having to match the beat means you're working in constant flow, always moving and meant to think on your feet. Rogue-likes can get very slow and tactical, and rhythm games can become all about memorising and perfecting rote levels. CotN is chaotic, and you need to adapt as you go, all the while moving with every beat as you try to figure out what to do next because a dragon just burst through the wall while you were trying to clear the skeletons in the current room. Not to mention the art and music are so chef kiss.

How many people are playing in predominantly tablet mode and how are you finding it? I see more people than I expected using the joycons off the tablet (either with or without the grip). -
Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SuperBiasedMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
I don't super mind. If it never gets Netflix I'd consider that a disappointment, but I'd still get it. Likewise streetpass and miiverse style social stuff would be a nice addition but aren't game changers. -
Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SuperBiasedMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
That along with the fact that the Switch is basically a tablet but doesn't have Netflix is a little baffling. It should be their most social thing yet especially with the multiplayer angle of selling it, but I guess (hope) that stuff just isn't done yet?
