The way values are being set is by looping through every cell and then setting the value. There's a series of else if commands, so first it decides on whether or not to place a wall and only if that doesn't happen it sets an enemy. So I never need to test the current cell for being a wall, only testing to see if it's empty or if other cells are walls. But that does mean you're right about adjusting the loop! I'm wasting a cycle checking the cell itself, twice in fact. I have it set as > rather than >= because the 0 cells are always just set as walls, to make the level enclosed. ...so I just rewrote it and now it works fine for reasons unknown. For posterity here's the rewritten functioning loop: for (curr = i - 1; curr > 0; curr--){ if (cells[curr,j] == 1){ break; } if (cells[curr,j] > 1){ return -5; } } I was just planning to tidy it on your suggestion iax, then went back to basics (ignored walls and didn't allow more than one in any row or column) and that was working, so I added what is practically the same code but apparently different enough to fix it. Yay!

So I have returned again. I'm trying to make a grid based game where each square of the grid is an element of a 2D array. But when trying to determine if a square is a viable place to put an enemy I'm getting some erratic behaviour. I go into detail and have my code in a Unity Questions page here if anyone thinks they could shed some light on it. (to be clear, the code functions and even catches some instances where there shouldn't be an enemy, but not all of them. And I am not sure why that is since i can't see a pattern to it)

Browser only games are inherently free but have a donate button. It's functionally similar to pay what you want but without prompting the user to suggest they donate money. You could have a download option alongside a browser based game though, I think. Also a tumblr is a good way to organise them. I'm doing that, currently a bit overdue for writing last week's post cause I'm working on this weeks game...

Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
No, but Raiders was. ...ok now to be clear and not just inflammatory. I saw Crystal Skull first, and it was just an ok movie to watch in the cinema. I was aware it was hated but without pre-existing context I just thought it was alright. Raiders actually bothered me because Indiana Jones is a prat. He's kinda the movie equivalent of video games' space asshole, the way he treats Marion is terrible and in general he just destructively blows through the movie in pursuit of his goal. And yet the film is predicated on the idea that you're supposed to like this guy. I think I was a bit more childish when I saw this, so that irritation probably distracted me from the fun of the movie itself. I think if expectations were the same for me in both movies I'd say the same. And yes, Crystal Skull does have a crazily long car chase sequence, it ends with a massive swarm of bugs or something. -
GameJolt for general stuff is good. Itch.io is too but has a limit on the number of games you can upload. (you can request to have a higher limit but I'm not sure what the criteria for allowing that is) Philome.la can host twine games. If it's a Unity game you could upload a webplayer version to dropbox and I've heard that can be played in browser. Also you could make any standalone, upload it to Dropbox/Google Drive then provide a direct link for people to download it from. EDIT: Clyde beat me to it, but to clarify about the EU screwing things, check out recent posts on the business of video (space) games thread. The short answer is, if you put your games down as free but give people the option to tip you then you avoid a bunch of nonsense.

Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best

Well since everyone's saying how they liked Ghostbusters 2, I guess this is the thread where I say how I found Crystal Skull more enjoyable than Raiders of the Lost Ark? -
I can confirm that the one time I got a job here it was partly cause I knew the guy interviewing me.

Worth pointing out that this guy making dumb tweets has a sizeable following as an Internet personality so it's not the same as your buddy who says a lot of dumb stuff, Dan has a real impression on people who casually view his stuff and subconsciously absorb his message.

Also quick reminder that a video game will not make you violent but media in general presenting a narrow view of an underrepresented group of people will give you unfortunate biases towards them. And GTA contributes to that in the worst way. It doesn't even matter if they are technically more capable than other NPCs. It's still a problem if their general representation is still that of a vending machine for sex that you could smack a little if you want a freebie.

I think last time this came up I tried to make this super clear but forgot to do so this time. So... Casual cronyism is a rampant problem through all industries and so I'm not saying GiantBomb are a special example of being bad at it. It's a pretty (unfortunately) common system that this is just one more example of.

Largely you make fair points but I have to say that this isn't a valid reason. The onus is not on unprivileged groups to create diversity. The onus is on those who have the power to hire to make the choices that undo the systemic oppression. If you really care about diversity you can seek out the applicants even if they didn't get in contact with you. I know this could be hard (tracking down potential hires that didn't reach out to you) but it's what has to be done if you do care about diversity. The hire also does depend on what you think the job entailed. Like you and others have said, Dan bringing fun to the cast is a fair choice and in some ways being just a casual happy gamer style dude is a personality that performs that job more than a person offering a new voice would. I don't think it's impossible to have hired a woman for that kind of role but it puts the hire in a different context.

Yeah, I watched the trailer and was a tiny bit disappointed just cause most shmups, like most FPSes, just feel unengaging to me so I might not play it much but I definitely want a good look at the art since the way that did it was by making actual physical models. ...which sounds like it may have been a folly? Hard to tell from a trailer so I wanna look closer.

Unrelated to the steam sale, there's a wonderful Humble Bundle for those of you that love sweet graphics. It's the current weekly bundle, which includes Year walk, Lovely Planet, Eidolon, FRACT OSC, Dust, MIND: Path to Thalamus as well as The Blue Flamingo. I dunno about everyone else but literally all of these (bar BF, which I've never heard of) were games I wanted to pick up at some point so this has me pretty jazzed. EDIT Also the average price is crazy low, people ought to raise that up.

The issue with it though is that the interactions with them are so narrow then that informs the players mental model of who these people are and what you do to them. When sex workers are always just people to be acted upon with no agency of their own they're not going to be humanised. Even if it has no incentive like getting your money back, if there's so little you can do with or to them, then the game implicitly honours those choices and says they're viable. Plus this is a prevailing depiction in other mediums too. It's not just that GTA is shitty, but it's a prime example of how this manifests in games. And even if you don't personally find it gross, you should pay attention to the underrepresented people who do, like the sex workers that made the petition in Australia.

This cast for medium has had some prior discussion. EDIT: Also worth noting for anyone who's heard the medium part before, this official episode has an extra 18ish minutes of... something? (I have not listened yet) -

itchio has written an extensive blogpost clarifying their system for VATMOSS, The short answer is, they wont be handling it for sellers. They WILL provide the option to collect location data and automatically calculate VAT based on the buyer's location (but these can be turned off), They do offer a handy back door though, They mention how amounts payed above the minimum price are not subject to VAT and that if you have a game with a zero as the minimum price then none of it is subject to VAT. Sooo that's going to be my monetisation model for 2015. -

Also Mordin was this way. I tried to romance him and he said "Oh no sorry, I don't do romance." I think what'd also be great is if the characters made moves on you, even if you didn't instigate a conversation and you just behaved in a way that triggered them wanting to talk to you. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 11: The Man Behind Glass
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I read it as that after the initial reveal but to me it did read as scepticism when Cooper first mentioned it, and even Cooper seemed to think it was less valid except that his ring was actually missing. I'll just say it here, but the sound quality was fine! I heard everything. And I think at the moment you sometimes struggle to really find things worth discussing, so it makes sense to drop two episodes at a time when so much of the show is filled with insurance, amnesiac, James plots. Also I thought that the scene with James screaming No was directly connected to the Leland and Maddie scene because as James leaves he swipes a lamp off a table out of frustration and then Leland walks in to look at his random act of violence to be like "...what was that?" and right after we follow James out it cuts back to Leland and Maddie there. -

Uhhh well after googling Patreon and VATMOSS I got an unsatisfying result that indicates maybe it and kickstarter would render artists liable for their rewards: http://www.cheryl-morgan.com/?p=20123 It's so nebulous though that sometimes the advice seems to be asking how careful you want to be, since this is all new territory and it's unsure exactly how these things will be enforced. Here's a petition about stopping it by the way. https://www.change.org/p/vince-cable-mp-uphold-the-vat-exemption-threshold-for-businesses-supplying-digital-products/share?after_sign_exp=default&just_signed=true
