It's definitely not his plan when I have to politely help him debug his mess.

I think it's technically illegal but nobody cares. The reason for region locking is that the owners of the film and TV charge sell regional based licences. So if Netflix wanted everyone in the world to see Luther it's more expensive than only having it on Irish Netflix. So technically the show's owners ought to get more for people from other regions watching it, but both they and Netflix are still getting paid so it doesn't seem like anyone's kicking up the biggest fuss about it.

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Hrmm, right that's what I get for leaping to respond before considering the possibility of inaccurate surveying... I mean, being less official doesn't inherently devalue the survey but there are some creative answers given to the gender question. So this is not the most legit set of data. It's still super weird though because having had the idea floated does make you really consider the idea that 'whale' style customers from free to play games can easily be people who can't afford it at all even though the traditional mental image is some working professional with money to burn. -
I am the biggest butt. I get so internally frustrated to see people doing bad work, even though this is in a course for all levels so everyone's learning at their own pace yada yada yada. But that doesn't stop me being irritated to see a guy on my project team copy and paste from tutorials he doesn't understand while trying to get it to work with images he took off Google images and photoshopped a bit. This is supposed to be an Android app people will actually use, so seeing the mess on his screen makes me wince. I AM being a butt for caring too much but I'm able to be a butt and still be partly right.

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool

Wow, those Star Citizen figures are horrifying. I would love to know how the studio reacted internally to them. Speaking personally, I'd be demotivated to the point of being unsure I wanted to work on the game any more. That is totally a personal reaction, I'm sure to some people this wouldn't affect their feelings about it at all but there must be some people who took the results badly and are trying to process it. -
Oh well, whatever...

I'm kinda hoping that experience in both animation and programming is the holy grail I can offer them... that and enthusiasm. They're actually a really good studio and I would enjoy the job a lot. I'm gonna do a ton of preparation, read up on the stuff I'm supposed to work on and bring some stuff I've made to try and demonstrate what I've done before. Maybe? I guess I'm too used to animation where (basically) minimum wage jobs aren't uncommon for experienced people so there isn't that kind of incentive to snap them up. I guess programming is probably different, but I've no experience of it. Yeah, I would be much more sceptical but these people in particular are a small studio, friendly bunch. I know which animation studios to have that kind of scepticism in my head for. I'm willing to let it go for these people... and instead have scepticism about them considering me capable enough of the job. But that's all fine as long as I'm outwardly being confident and charming. I can fake those things.

Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best

But little do they know, only one bluray copy still exists and is being sought out by the Russians. That intern, one Indiana Jones Jr must seek out the lone DVD in Indiana Jones Jr and "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull Bluray Edition" -
Hearing a bunch of people's thoughts and reactions with the potential to engage with them is why I think twitter is great and GG gave me the impetus to mass follow a bunch of people who I otherwise don't hear enough from, I recommend it to anyone who feels like they don't understand this that well. Especially because hearing a bunch of people can give you a broader range of ideas to draw on.

Also to chime in as someone who watched his old videos, I could believe that TB thought that was harmless and didn't believe that he's biased in recommending the game.
-
Yeah, I used to watch him but I feel loath to actually watch his stuff knowing that he's waded this far into blood and carried on through. I think he has some opinions of value but I wont any more until he does a complete 180 on GamerGate and acknowledges it for what it is instead of trying to keep it going.

Hooooly crap. So I just got called and offered an interview for a job with an amazing studio looking for someone with an art background to work on developing a program in house. I applied for this job cause I'd be great at it in theory... Except on paper I have no experience or education in the field (except a 6 month course in another programming language that I'm only halfway done). So I didn't even send them a CV, I just emailed and talked about how great I'd be for the job. So they believed me enough to call me in. God, what if I'm one of those assholes that explains how he got his first job through confidence even though he had no idea what he was doing and was unqualified. ... I hope that happens, but likely they'll realise I have catching up to do when I have an interview with the IT head and the guy who knows the job inside out.

Idle Thumbs 190: A Very Spectrum HoloByte Christmas
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
We say those in Ireland! -
I don't think the comic deserved damning, but more examination. On my first read it was pretty ambiguous in its meaning and I was linked to it as being about GamerGate, I just couldn't tell whether the Sealion was a GG person or the humans were GG people ignoring the sealion that represented... ???. Ultimately I did realise what it was but I think it's unfair to claim the comic is clear and that someone couldn't honestly making the mistake of identifying with the sealion and finding it problematic. It's really not clear and direct, and without ambiguity comes unintended readings that you have to accept and deal with.

Everyone I know has always said flah (rhymes with blah). Isn't spelling it out cumbersome? -
"It's not men's fault, it's the ruling class." Who do these people think the ruling class are? Do they genuinely believe that there's only a small group of people dictating the rules of how society works and everyone else is prey to their whims?
-
Another aside, pushing the door close button often doesn't do anything at all. They're included just so people feel like they've done something but have no mechanical effect.

I'm a butt who hasn't had time to go over you guys' stuff just yet but I'll dump in my list. It's all small stuff, none of it was worked on for that long cause I'm trying to accumulate experience, have fun and enjoy the general work more than making finished stuff. My twine games first: Perfection The Agency Sorry this has to be downloaded, itch.io treated the twine game weirdly and I never uploaded it to philome.la. On an unrelated fun note, this was my first game sale ever, woop! Chat with sassypantaloons And then some of my other games: Life Unfortunately due to a bug I never diagnosed, the web version of this doesn't adjust colour values and they all look the same shade. Unlike in the screenshot there. If anyone really wants I could send a standalone build cause those worked for me fine. Don't Shoot Beat Me (Android app only) and my last release, technically out on New Years Day, Funeral If my game a week endeavour goes as planned, I'll have another... 47 games by the end of this year. At least. This is gonna be a fun year.

The weirdest was how I always said anime without emphasising the e. You're supposed to say it as if it's ani-may but I said it as if it rhymed with time. Only in college did I meet more stringent anime nerds that corrected me. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 12: Laura's Secret Diary

I keep meaning to bring this up but does Hank remind anyone else of young Hal from Malcolm in the Middle? Not Bryan Cranston, Hal specifically. -
I'm kind of curious about this too. I'm from Ireland where the police don't generally have guns, let alone citizens. But I've never been that big of a fan of shooters (for unrelated reasons I think. I enjoy movement based stuff way more, clicking on things to kill them doesn't engage me much) so I don't know if I can contribute much to the specific point but I'm curious to see what other Non-american thumbs might say. In general it does feel gross to me, I'm not keen on it. When it's more real that feels to me like it ties into and evokes actual conflict more, which can illicit a less detached reaction (to some people that might still be positive). But regardless of realism, I think people internalise the implicit narrative of things that go unquestioned in people's minds. In an old episode of the podcast, the Thumbs talked about the creators of a Splinter Cell game not realising there was a possibility to make their game have sections with torture that don't work as part of the narrative. To the game creators, when torture failing was suggested, they thought it would require a branching timeline, instead of just having the torture fail to get good information and making that part of the story. I've always remembered this because it's a perfect encapsulation of how you can limit the possibilities in someone's brain by constantly presenting a view of reality and never giving alternatives.

That's weird, cause I definitely didn't d... oh god. You're right, I had an old line of code still lingering. I first just had a basic way of setting each value to 0 or 1, when I was just making sure that I could set up the system to iterate through the array and assign values, but I never got rid of it. My new system does overwrite every cell anyway, so when the whole array was iterated it worked fine and I didn't get invisible walls, buuut when it was determining where the walls were, those ghost walls were still in the array. This is exactly why I should examine the parts of the code that aren't the bit I'm working on, too often it's because of something else rather than what I'm focused on(even if it's not as dumb as old code lying around). Thanks for the help!
