  1. Can We Discuss the Possibility of Shenmue 3?

So if one wanted to figure out what this Shenmue thing was first hand, is it possible to play the original without tricky emulation or is there some suitable let's play that would show it off?
  2. Social Justice

Essentially yes. As much as you might wish it not to be the case, what race you are affects your responsibility as an individual because if you have privilege you should wield it carefully (since you don't really have the option to not wield it). Also the reason the race matters is entirely because it has a different effect. It's not that a white dude doing it gets blamed when a black person doesn't. It's that a black person getting credit for another black person's cultural work still means it's seen as a contribution from black people as a group, so there is no appropriation style 'theft' going on. I don't want to say too much on this because I don't have the best handle on cultural appropriation but thus much seems pretty clear to me at least.
  3. Social Justice

It is essentially taking away their culture. It's not about individual's achievements, it's about the idea that (for example) black people have not achieved anything with black culture. Because white people will take things from the culture, make it a commodity and remove it from the context of the original source so that it's now just assumed to be part of the 'default' white American culture.

    GoT spoilers.
  6. Recently completed video games

Me and my girlfriend finishes Sorcery 1 and 2 today and they really highlight how much better 80 Days is to me. Dieing and rewinding to redo stuff is part of the design but feels awful and means too much repeat playing too. I think Sorcery's premise and core design being so gamey essentially procludes it from doing the smart writing choices that made 80Days such a joy. The second one has you collect a set of McGuffins, but in a game where you can't properly double back without actually undoing progress that means you're supposed to get it right in one run, or deal with the punishments that the incorrect path burdens on you. It doesn't help that the game is portrayed as being hard, but finding the right choice is often about luck or having the correct knowledge (from happening upon a source of information). Puzzles are relatively rare. I should just reinstall 80Days again and never let it leave my phone.

This may be of interest to people: http://klls.cr/1Gw1o3v
  8. True Detective Weekly - Welcome!

In Pocket Casts, if you can't find it with with a normal search then you can enter the exact RSS feed link in the search box and add it that way. (I believe this is how new shows actually appear on pocket casts's search page too)That shouldn't be a problem now though, cause I added the RSS to Pocket Casts.
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Woof. Whether it's maliciousness or negligence that allows that to happen, your site has serious problems.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The difference with reddit is that the most popular subreddits are still harassment hot spots that are unfriendly to different opinions. The only way to get a good opinion of reddit without being blind to harassment is to ignore the main subreddits that they have you follow by default. The entire set up of the site is one that encourages mass consensus and mob behaviour. So though there can be upsides, built into its' core is a strong culture of othering anyone who is different. That makes counterracting harassment and antisocial behaviour hard because popular opinion dictates what's good and what's bad. Of course a select moderation time can take care of that, but they've not made much of an effort to moderate it previous to this so it has been well entrenched in the problems the system encourages.
  11. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

As far as I remember, Steam allows developers to essentially generate free steam keys and hand them out either as giveaways or as multiplatform sales, like itch.io also offering a steam key. Steam gets the benefit of hooking people into the platform more, so they're ok with essentially giving free games in this manner. (and I suspect the number of people that seek out alternatives to Steam in the hope of still getting a key are limited)
  12. Idle Thumbs 214: Ship It, Droopy

The David Cage thing was the actual tutorial in my copy of Indigo Prophecy. I got it on gog a few years ago and it opened with him walking around a movie set environment teaching me the controls and hinting about what the game will handle. Also since you apparently get shit for them a lot I just wanna say thanks you for the spoiler warning, it was much appreciated!
  13. It's funny you say that. I felt like the ending with Cooper was a shallow cliffhanger the first time round, but on this rewatch it felt more fitting for his character.
  14. Unity Questions Thread

For what it's worth, I follow object oriented programming but Unity seems to have an extra layer of weird obfuscation that makes it harder.
  15. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

You can still get PP in TWEWY with mingling if you never meet anyone because they will occasionally just give you some PP anyway in case you're not a DS mingler but still want to collect every pin. (which was my exact situation)
  16. No Thumbs, Especially Chris! Just a dev log, don't worry.

Please tell me you're using the classic fart noise for that.
  17. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

Instead of the VATS system I opted for the 'melee everything to death' approach, and it was also way too effective for me through the game. I didn't really play it for the combat.

  19. XCOM 2

Any hint of adding undoable moves or at least a consistent understanding of what moving into a square will allow you? One of the worst parts of EU was moving a soldier into position to take out an enemy, only to discover that apparently it's not an adequate spot for line of sight. The soldier can't do anything else in their turn and now the alien gets to move in on the idiot that ran so far they couldn't see the alien any more.
  20. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

I'm going to be in Sweden for this year's Dublin pride parade. Which sucks cause I expect it'll be a good one. Also fun fact, I recently heard on the Allusionist (Helen Zaltzman's podcast about etymology and word culture) that the original Gay Pride parade was going to be called a Gay Power parade, which would be much more uncomfortable! They changed the name because Pride is something anyone can have, even when oppressed.

My username is just my actual names stuck together as one word.
  22. Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar

The just play path is actually incredibly simple if you click the tick box for official servers only, because then you can only get vanilla servers with none of the custom crap. Also usually less experienced players go there so it can be more fun and casual.
  23. Conspiracy; Open your eyes sheeple

I meant that people will believe they're real conspiracies, but I like that you flipped it to be on the other side.
