  1. New people: Read this, say hi.

This is like a pure distillation of introductory posts on here, I love it. Welcome!
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

    Fixed it for you.
  3. Tacoma from Fullbright

Sweet trailer. I love the range of body types they tried to show off here too even with the limited way of representing people.
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

Oh, I got mixed up in my notation. You are correct. That is a lot less ludicrous, but still much better than I'm used to.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

Finally got my internet in the new place, 120Mb/s is sooo good and totally unnecessary since it amounted to a maximum of 15Mb/s downloading on Steam... though that's still ludicrously good. (Weirdly this is basically the lowest speed this provider offered, so I didn't even choose this speed so much as wanted the low level plan)
  6. Other podcasts

I come with a recommendation and a related request. I started listening to Backstory, which is a history podcast about a new topic of American history every week. They've done topics like rights battles, attitudes to the ideal body and Islam in America. They treat them pretty broadly and get lots of little interviews and segments. It reminds me that the most interesting way to view history is to examine the way a different world worked, which also challenges your assumptions about how the world always works. Does anyone have any recommendations for similar podcasts that aren't American centric? Whether they're about history or just examining modern societies in an interesting way.
  7. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I forgot that you don't just assume I'm joking when I try to make clearly ludicrous statements.
  8. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

It is 'round these parts. (probably?)
  9. Idle Thumbs 218: Yanis' Last Move

Yes Jake, Full Watto did sound like Full Throttle.
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I eventually gave up and skimmed the trash mob discussion, but it's weird that people are mostly looking at the actual enemies rather than the game mechanics (not genre) as the problem. If the gameplay isn't intrinsically engaging, then you'll probably get trash mobs because there's no reason to do the fights apart from the extrinsic reward of loot, experience etc. Old Final Fantasy games are the perfect example of this, as Twig and others have pointed out. But the Mario RPG games are a good counter point, where the timing of button presses is important for fights. You can reduce the damage you take by reading enemy tells and pressing buttons at the right times, likewise you can increase your damage with the same. Even on trivial weak fights, it can both give you the satisfaction of performing well and is important so you don't get worn down before the important fights. Likewise if an FPS is full of bullet sponges and no headshot mechanic, you absolutely have trash mobs. The little skill required to aim at the creature is minimal and negligible (compared to other FPS games at least) so you're not really going to care about them and you're just fighting trash. Also I don't normally use the word trash or mob at all so this was a weird post. If you want to read it in my native tongue, replace trash with rubbish and mob with monster.
  11. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

'Yous' is a favoured expression among inner city Dubliners here, for you plural, similar to 'ye'.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm going to see Inside Out on Monday and will be pleasantly surprised if it is the return to form for Pixar that others have claimed.
  13. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Minor note, there IS a way to get attacked by the green slimes in Crypt of the Necrodancer. There's an achievement for it.
  14. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

If you like the Swapper, I recommend the Fall for very similar setting, tone and themes but overall more successful to me. I was less of a fan of the puzzles because they're more adventure gamey, but that seems to be pretty popular in this forum.
  15. Job Hunting

I work in animation and my girlfriend is a freelance illustrator. Neither of us have ever heard of CorelDraw before.
  16. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I totally disagree Osmosisch! TF2 is largely about movement. It's not very overt but there's a reason I'm pretty good at that FPS even tho I can't aim at all.
  17. Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

I entirely agree with this and will probably discover myself having done this stuff in scripts from earlier in the year at some point.
  18. I Had A Random Thought...

You're eating too fast and cooking too slow my friend. (though admirably fast at washing up)
  19. Movie/TV recommendations

You forgot Dreamworks 1998: What if Moses made a wacky face?
  20. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

@natellite For sure, I'm not claiming that anyone who's made mistakes needs to be in some shit list. I explain better what I mean below. @Gaizo I think you have it backwards. I'm not advocating that you bet everyone's past. I'm advocating that you think about everything you consume. If you think it's iffy at all, then considering a history of troubled output is useful to judge that person's output that troubled you in the first place.
  21. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Funny how you say you can't play 3D platformers, cause I often find it much more irritating how it boxes in movement in FPS games (which is why TF2 is my FPS). @Griddelol: Yeah I wasn't sure if you meant that or not, I thought I worded my response to be taken either way so sorry if it sounded off!
  22. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I like 2D a ton more not cause of nostalgia, but because they have a much higher fidelity of precise movement and exactness. 3D stuff is inherently looser because it has to be with that 3rd dimension. But good 2D games, like Mario and Spelunky benefit greatly from allowing the player to hone their understanding of the movement and develop their abilities accordingly.
  23. Movie/TV recommendations

Have you seen the original pilot or even what the designs for it were? Cause they used to be damn ugly.
  24. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

If you can't question someone's judgement for having previous questionable decisions, when can you? It's not like the linked comic is without problematic interpretation. So if anything, the previous questionable comics would justify aversion to this particular one. Also I'm sorry, but I really hate this quote You should never accept anyone's word as gospel. Everyone is fallible, despite best intentions, and you shouldn't be a passive consumer. If you care about social justice stuff, you should actually consider the aspects of what you're consuming. To take a common example, I think the Thumbs are great folks who make an effort to be good for this stuff but they make mistakes. I'm not going to pretend they're designated good ones and ignore that stuff just because it's rare. And I apply the same to anybody else, no matter how much I feel aligned with the majority of their social justice output.

Oh, I missed subscribing last time you posted and now you've come back and got the author of one of my GOTY's. Sweet!
