  1. In a sense, but I'm sure there are 2D games capable of the same idea theoretically if they just added tiny pieces of interactivity everywhere. I don't mean masses of voiceclips, I mean being able to push and pull on drawers that might be totally irrelevant. Or pushing stuff out of the way. It'd probably be a design mess but pulled off right it would actually make for a good experience. I feel like the actual problem with pixel hunting is that you're looking at a rigid picture for the one piece that you can do anything with. Not that searching a screen is inherently unfun.
  2. Bedlam - A post apocalypse Banner Saga

Essentially it's less about needing to have everything available to you and more about disliking the implied developer attitude that the babies playing on Easy don't deserve the unlocks?
  3. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I entirely agree with griddelol. I (against the odds) really enjoyed the main plot of 1. The exploration and the maturing of humanity as well as the hinting at a wider world. Then 2 established that they weren't at all interested in those ideas, they just wanted cool characters in a badass space fight. 2 doesn't do anything interesting with a *good* set up. There's a lot of conflict/potential for conflict but in the end all you do is shoot a bunch of stuff and then it says "Look forward to ME3!". (this is aside from the characters' stories)
  4. Feminism

    People clap at the cinema!?
  5. Feminism

Oh wow. Neither of these was my experience. People clap at the end of lectures? We had no dorms at all but we still had a clear cohesive group because I studied a degree where I was one of 30 people specifically just studying our classes. So for every single class I'd see the same full group of people for all four years (aside from new additions, drop outs and repeats). My college experience was even more insular of a group than my secondary school. For reference this is an Irish college but I was studying animation in a relatively small college so I had a weirder experience.
  6. Best Robinsonade games?

Thus is apparently the thread for me to poop on games but I have big reservations about Out There. The game devolved into luck and swapping out materials in an overly simply system for me. And the narrative never really paid off, the aliens all have very simple prescribed speech and no actual culture to speak of. The endings all fell flat and those were the only real story points. Does anyone know if their updated edition made a big difference?
  7. Best Robinsonade games?

I just started Miasmata today! I would not suggest it here as much. It's more directed with an intended throughline than it is about general exploratory play. That said I'm enjoying it a ton but partly because it doesn't do what a lot these Robinsoes do, and I don't enjoy a lot about them normally so the changes are much more engaging to me. I actually felt pretty uninterested in Don't Starve. It seemed to be very crafting focused and I have never found any game that made me give a shit about crafting. The total loss of progress every time just frustrated me too (though I assume after a point of progress I could have saved to some extent).
  8. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

The recent Zelda game with the rental system is one way to try it. I think the problem is less that there aren't other solutions and more that the unlock one seems tried and true, so it's a safe seeming bet
  9. Idle Thumbs 227: Quiet The Clown

To sound like a white American woman. Note that call centres have very specific scripts the employees should follow anyway. They have a script that's supposed to contain all the stuff they could possible need to say, so presumably it seemed easy enough to transfer to a soundboard.
  10. Game Jams

I have no idea at all yet so I'm trying to run the brain machine this weekend. The requirements are a little odd, to base it on an existing IP but abstract it away so it's ideally not even recognisable. I should probably think about specific IPs to copy and then imagine ways of abstracting them into 30 second games. I'm currently thinking the opposite way around and not doing as well.
  11. Pokemon GO

Not sure if this is what you meant but it will be on Android too.
  12. Rocket League

added u can i ur earbud bud hahaha srsly plz You can add me here for more riveting jokes like that.
  13. Idle Thumbs 227: Quiet The Clown

After that discussion of the quiet it seems appropriate to plug this thread on the forums: https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/9724-baby-got-backstory-a-trope-creation-thread/
  14. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

The question both The Quiet and vegans dread.
  15. Pokemon GO

They've really diverged even further here than they did from Hitman Go to Lara Croft Go. It does look pretty fun as a direct copy of a generic game model that might be more fun if it's got Pokémon and tons of players. Glad it has actual Android version too, but what the hell was that trailer? It seemed like it was meant to be an inspiring thing. I wouldn't have been surprised to see "We can make a difference." flash up on screen.
  16. Rocket League

I am on the Rocket League train. I entirely agree with the sentiment that it actually feels like playing the game compared to older football based games. I was not prepared for how exciting and frantic the physics makes it, but I am very pleased. If a Thumb sees me playin, feel free to message about a match.
  17. Game Jams

I am down with this. Need to get my jam on and 2 weeks to make a 30 second game is pretty ample time.
  18. I Had A Random Thought...

Why isn't there an easy way to say "That sounds like a fun idea, I would love to do it but I'm not comfortable with spending that much money to do it."? In particular cause I can't imagine being able to respond with that without people either assuming I have financial trouble or just don't value their friendship very highly.
  19. I Had A Random Thought...

I think it has less of a racial connection in the UK and Ireland, but not none since we are exposed to American media. You can hardly claim it was a good choice of words, even if it's been misconstrued.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

There's actually a thread called Stealing on this exact topic, I think in the game development sub forum? Clyde was interested in the ethics of appropriating other people's photos/work without permission.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It seems pointless to police the effort people put into their work since there's no meritocracy anywhere and people get a lot of money for lazy work all the time.
  22. I can't wait til they make a shitty ARG centred around W10 Cortana to promote a Halo sequel.
  23. Idle Thumbs 225: Read Our Lips

Your dwellers have finally rebelled I see.
  24. Other podcasts

I definitely think they're pressured for it. They're the only consistent output for the company so theyre being relied on pretty heavily, meanwhile Mystery Show was delayed for weeks before suddenly appearing and being the last in the first series. I kinda wonder if one mystery just didn't pan out, I'd like to hear a StartUp episode about it.
