Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to SuperBiasedMan's topic in Idle Banter
The first theme begins! We're all going to be writing about Space Boss: The Lord of Space. Looking forward to what people do with this title I did not remember existing at all. The poll has also closed on a 3000 word limit. If you think that's low, bear in mind that if 10 people were to write stories, that's a difference between a total 30,000 or 50,000 words. In the interest of making it more readable, 30,000 is much more manageable (though I don't expect everyone to hit that maximum of course). Use the extra time to refine what you've written, tighten it up and do extra drafts. I have edited the first post to include the basic rules and all the diversifiers. I recommend reading all of them now, then going and mulling over your story. When you have a basic idea, reread the diversifiers and see what changes they suggest to you. Diversifiers are good at pulling you out of ruts, or turning a bland feeling idea into something more interesting. Now get out there and write your Space Boss stories! -
Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Each jam will be a month long, to write a maximum of 3-5000 words (voting has not yet finished on that). There is, however, no age restriction. So forum babies are entirely welcome. -

I added a poll about word counts. Remember it's a maximum. You can absolutely write less, 15 word haikus are valid entries. I think it even makes more sense to vote based on being a reader. How long of a text do you think is comfortable and easy to read, especially with multiple stories to read. -
I have a copy of Broken Age from the same bundle if anyone wants it.

I'm thinking of making no minimum, especially since people can choose whatever form to write in. But having a 5000 word maximum, that gives a cap to stay under without being too restrictive. I think that's short enough to be readable for people too, since we want people to be able to read the full set of entries without getting fatigued. -

Idle Weekend May 27, 2016: We've Been Playing
SuperBiasedMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
I liked the topicless episode. Though I'd like if you talked a bit longer about individual games, it felt like a series of appetisers instead of digging into any particular games. That might just be a side effect of having a lot of games to be fair, since you don't normally take this approach. -
Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to SuperBiasedMan's topic in Idle Banter
Barring any delays or issues we should be good to start this coming Saturday, the 4th of June. I will unveil the theme on the day, and then the writing begins. I'll encourage people to chat about progress or roadblocks as they work, both in this thread and on the slack (a link to where you can sign up is in the first post). In the mean time, I'll brainstorm some diversifiers and have a list ready for Saturday when our first theme and first jam will begin. -
Oooh, that's great! For the first time I regret not having a bluray reading device.

I love that idea twmac. You could even just use idioms even if you're writing directly in english. The literal translation of "I'm very hungry" from Irish is "the hunger of the world is upon me". Neither slack nor constant participation are mandatory! You absolutely can drop in and out, I just want a good sweet spot time so that a lot of people can be a part of it every time if that is what they want. And yeah slack is just another communication method, there'll still be regular posts on these forums. So it is looking like we might be doing monthly. As for where to host it, I was wondering about setting up on Medium. It's free, it seems pretty popular at the moment so maybe people outside the forum/jam community could find it. We wouldn't be officially gathering onto our own special page like an itch.io jam, but we could use a tag so all our stuff can still be gathered in one place. Anyone have thoughts about that? I don't post any writing online at the moment so I'm totally open to suggestions, especially if there's concerns about Medium for any reason. -
I'm not gonna retweet it just cause you asked! I will retweet cause it's super good tho.

You can grant lands to people to make them vassals, or diplomatically offer for independent people to become your vassal. You could also go to war to claim another person's vassal I think?

Sorry I haven't been responding about people's games, I will catch up and give feedback to both of you! As it's my turn now, I have a simple twine game I made a couple years back. It's quite short so it shouldn't take people long, but it's one of my most cohesive games. It actually came out with the feel I intended when I first came up with the idea, which is actually pretty rare for me. It's called Perfection and you can find it on my itch.io here: https://superbiasedman.itch.io/perfection

Yes I was thinking it'd be one theme to rule them all, I'll amend that to the first post cause I realise I didn't make it clear at all. It builds, We ignore it, living our comfortable ignorant lives. and builds, No-one bothers wondering about where it all goes. and builds, We just flush and forget. and bursts. The damn flows, and we all remember. Poetry is perfectly fine. Frankly I shouldn't have even locked off nonfiction, it's just that Idle Fiction sounded better in my head than Idle Writing. -
Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready
SuperBiasedMan replied to SuperBiasedMan's topic in Idle Banter
I'm awful, I never posted about extending the deadline. With wizard jam and possible clubbing fatigue I'm declaring an extended period. Take more time to make a sausage dish, or go back to one you missed and never got to do. This is a free period for the club, I encourage you to make something slightly less constrained than normal. We'll be back with a new theme in a couple weeks. -

If it does expect you to wipe out vassals and allies that creates an interesting end game conundrum. -

Why didn't you like TF2? They're not the same game though there's a lot taken from TF2 in it. -
Idle Weekend May 20, 2016: History Doomed to Repeat Itself
SuperBiasedMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
I'm generally wary of sequels because they so rarely develop the aspects I cared about in their predecessors. Mass Effect 2 polished off the gameplay but changed the story to a completely different direction than I wanted. This sequel problem can happen because of trying to make something with wider appeal, or because the creators just had a different idea of what made the original popular. Either way, it ends up meaning that a polished sequel is disappointing to me, and I wonder if that's what Rob meant on the cast. Though at the same time it can fall flat by retreading the same ground pointlessly and feeling like the same old stuff. My general "sequels are bad" mentality is that I never assume I'll like a sequel just because I liked what came before, but I'm interested enough to find out whether they've built on what I liked or not. -
It would! But I believe Teddy has said that he'd wrap up the show. I suspect he's more comfortable interviewing people from a scene he's established in, rather than suddenly interviewing a lot of people in a new city.

If it matters jenna, Playscape LA will have a limited run since Teddy (the host) will be moving to Montréal.

I tend to listen when cooking, washing up and doing other monotonous tasks or walking to/from anywhere so that adds up to a few hours a day. I sometimes listen to less important casts in work to clear out the backlog a bit because at this point I have too many.
