  1. For whatever reason, American accents generally seem to be easy to understand for me (I'm Irish) while there's some Irish accents that can make me pause when they're extra heavy.
  2. So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)

This is an irish phenomenon known as "holy shit, that famous person will be here!? In this country? Screw it, let's go then I guess."
  3. Recently completed video games

Finished Transistor. It was surprisingly even more complicated to follow than I expected, even though the basic plot was a pretty simple concept. It was just like they wrote a normal story, then cut out all the flashbacks and some worldbuilding, then ran with that. I liked it, but I could tell I'd enjoy the gamplay a lot more if I'd actually been good at the game and not taken a few hours to realise that things i do during turn will move around the enemies and affect my attacks in ways the plan wont show me. (end game spoilers ho) I was also Now I can look forward to reading the spoilers from the thread and seeing how everyone else responded.
  4. So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)

Basically the concert was planned to be in this big sports stadium that's literally in the middle of a residential area. Nearby residents aren't that keen on how actively the stadium is used for general events, but there's special provisions to keep it from being too bad, like limiting the number of concerts they can hold. Along comes Garth Brooks, and the agency running the gig book a few nights that sell out, then they say "Ah, why not book 5?" I've heard a lot of people say it's supposed to be maximum 3 concerts a year in this place, but I don't know if that's entirely accurate cause I haven't looked into it myself, the point is it's too much. The residents complained and actually got their complaint heard, so Garth was told 3 nights only. Then Mr. Brooks said "I don't want to disappoint my fans, if not all of them can be there then I wont do any of the nights." So yeah, cause of that people went a bit mental. Also it turned out the agency never even applied for the permit they needed for the initial few days run. So there was that too.
  5. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Soon will be the day to fling money and portraits at me.
  6. Help me forget about Olly Moss and move on with my life

I just wanted to say it's fun reading this thread when you accidentally keep seeing Oily Moss in every post.
  7. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

"Ahm, the strahngest woman in da woild" I don't know. I do know that there's nearly enough money for the portrait now. Based on the amounts people have donated we'll hit total goal with one or two more people sending money (and me making up the difference). Hooray for awesome community effort!
  8. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

Damnit now I do too. But Nintendo will probably never allow it, which is crazy! It's not like they once tried to get a film made of a popular mascot that failed in their eyes in every conceivable way.
  9. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

I don't know about totally inevitable just because a feature length animated production is a whole magnitude more work, not simply the equivalent of making a bunch of shorts. And they have publicly said there were plans but they decided against it. Of course that doesn't mean they never will, and it IS Valve. ...wait wasn't there some deal where JJ Abrams was going to direct a Portal and maybe Half Life film?
  10. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

Valve were talking about doing one but decided instead to make a 15 minute short, called It was funny and the right spirit and all. A little disappointingly the main plot was but I still liked it a lot and I agree it's one of the better diversions into film a game has done.
  11. So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)

I don't remember what but I feel like this isn't the first time that a random country said "Oh you need a hand with something Ireland? We could help." Also there's gerbil gossip too now? Having a job has me so out of the loop.
  12. So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)

Is this just our official chat about Ireland thread now? Cause I'm for that. The Garth Brooks thing is so weird, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister/head government) had a meeting to try sort something out because of just how much money this'd make for the country.
  13. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

The explorer finds his old buddy Yang that lead him to the site in the first place. Yang congratulates the explorer, they shoot out of the volcano on their pile of treasure and the two of them are carried away in the parade into the sunset. The screen fades to black, and then a torch is illuminated. The explorer wakes up at the entrance yet again. The archway is adorned with valuable just enters, saying the only word he speaks in the whole movie "More..."
  14. Fan Fiction

I know some people who sell print fan art stuff at cons and it's because realistically it's what sells. People in cons indulge in their fandoms and don't often care as much about original content or characters. That doesn't make it any less illegal but I think it shouldn't be ignored that the artists are still putting in plenty of work to try making things that are inspired by or involve copyrighted characters.
  15. Transistor

I was mostly amused because I've never even heard of Bink do that made it seem more arcane
  16. I feel like the amount of work needed to get into Lords Managements is kinda disappointing. Me and a friend tried to get into LoL a bit but the level of strategy was so inscrutable that my usual approach to games (playing around, choosing things that sound fun or interesting rather than focusing on effectiveness) didn't just make me play bad. I was totally crushed. I don't think I even got a single kill, just a few assists. By contrast, TF2 hooked me immediately with the idea that I could just light people on fire then push them around. I was presumably garbage for many hours of TF2, as someone who can't aim and just flung bullets and projectiles around. I slowly got not terrible at the game because even if I was being stomped I had fun running around and stuff. I've played it for hundreds of hours and I know more of the meta and higher level tactics but there was no way I'd get this deep without the basic level of accessibility it offered. I don't really get why Lords Managements are so different in that way, whether the actual design framework procludes a simple low level to draw people in as fun or if it's because the audience actually wants it to be hard to grasp from the get go.
  17. Fan Fiction

I think that fact is kind of inevitable given the fact that fanfic writers have immense passion and no editor. As someone who doesn't get that deep into 'worlds' (I usually only watch/play/read the original source, not the expansions of the universe) I find fanfics an odd fascination. Especially when they become the fans way of correcting the mistakes the author made, where it's essentially "Your story is great but if it used my ideas it'd be truly amazing!" It's like people use fanfics to personalise their experiences of a universe more to them as an individual.
  18. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

I think it might cost me a tenner to get to Kildare village. Just give your postman a letter that says "For the chadwick lad" and it'll find its way back to me. I also found this.
  19. Movie/TV recommendations

Well I guess I should clarify that I meant as a person who works in media I didn't think many people cared about the credits. I feel like actually having my work appreciated or acknowledged in person matters more than getting my name on the screen. But I guess I haven't gone to that many screenings where the people who made the thing were all there.
  20. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

It depends on what cafepress things we want to clutter their office with. There are cushions. Also you people work fast, already 2 donations sent and we're basically a quarter of the way to the portrait. (PS Grufff I like that you accidentally referred to yourself as a lurcher instead of a lurker)
  21. Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita

Well I was under the assumption that the phrase was actually required in the press release info that was being sent out, rather than the writer feeling like it was the best way to describe it in the article.
  22. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Ok, so if people want to go ahead with this I'm up for sorting it out. The total amount needed isn't that high, just $70. (Unless people want to just fill a cafépress store with Danielle mugs, t-shirts and underwear to send to the Thumbs) So my paypal email is iamoggvorbis@gmail.com (I thought OggVorbis sounded more like a cheesey super villain name than a filetype) If you're chipping in you can just note you're a Thumb and I'll update people on how the total goes here.
  23. The spelling of Danielle Riendeau does not fit with that accent.
  24. Movie/TV recommendations

I think everyone who contributed to a movie should be given credit, but I've always thought that post movie credits did very little for that since most people only take note of the famous actors, director and then maybe the head person of one of the other disciplines, but I've never gotten the sense that the credits really do much to highlight the contributions of low level employees.
  25. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Just realised it'd be a perfect hook for Bloodborne.
