  1. Well, on the topic of Battlefield Hardline specifically there's a thread on this forum where there's a discussion between people who do and don't see a problem with the portrayal in the game. Hardline is a less clear example, but overall there are always people on both sides of an issue and there are always people who aren't aware of the other side, or don't see it as an issue, or laugh at the idea that the issue should be taken seriously cause it's just a game.

Also the Transistor thread is 60% spoilered text. (I also think it's not a big debate don't worry I was into it but could entirely see it missing the mark for others very easily)
  3. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

That sounds really fun, I'd be up for doing that, definitely.
  4. Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread

Is this the first kickstarter where people will be disappointed with if it delivers on the promises?

In my playthrough of Transistor I kept putting on every limiter and I also sucked pretty hard, so I frequently lost functions and that did well to force me to change up my moves basically the whole way through. I think that was a good system that worked, but only if you weren't the kind of person who was good at the game and would be trying to master things. For those people I think they were banking on the completionism of unlocking the character bios.

    What did I just read.
  7. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

I was trying dsfix but had to remove it to sort out some other things to get the game to run first, then I just went right into playing once I was actually able to. I'm planning to reinstate the DSfix stuff again now. My brother has PS3 ones but I'm likely moving out of here soon and can't take one with me so I didn't wanna go through the hassle of installing the touchy drivers for it. So I kinda wanted to play a bit first to make sure that I actually enjoy the game first before I buy a controller... I'm aware that may be jeopardising enjoyment of the game but I still wanna try. if it gets shitty enough I can switch to a controller and give the game a fairer go. I'm guessing the button mapping is muddled because enter functions fine most of the time but occasionally acts funky, the equipment way being the most egregious. And yes I am a pyromancer (I like them flames), I picked up a fire hand thing from an undead dude and I can equip that but don't know if there's a special button/different prerequisite for attacking with it. But I realised that I was being a dummy and had one of the secondary hand keys rebound wrong (I switched them to iokl but turns out I forgot one). Also I feel like I should outright say I'm not saying I think the game is terrible, this experience was just a pile more frustration than I expected. EDIT: Oh, and thanks for DSMfix! I knew about the other one but not that. It might make it easier than my current arrangement that requires three hands. (movement, attack and looking around)
  8. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

This is the hardest damn game to get going. I'm 40 minutes in and after dealing with GFWL I am playing the game but after picking up the shield and the axe I'm entirely unable to equip either. I know for certain I'm pressing the right buttons. I know about switching weapons and how each hand has two slots. As far as the internet's concerned, those are the only two reasons I might be getting stuck here, but when I click on an empty slot, it gives me the list of equipment that can go in there, but when I try to click and choose it the game just exits the whole equipment menu and I'm standing there with the default blade hilt thing. It's actually the most frustrating gaming experience I have ever had, mostly because I know there's a bunch more of the actual game yet to come that's SUPPOSED to trip me up and make me work for it. EDIT: Turns out it works if I use the mouse. Hallelujah. EDIT2: I can't tell if I should be able to cast magic yet or not.
  9. TSG said a lot of intelligent stuff already but I feel compelled to say that I'd personally rather a medium that eschews harmful stereotypes even if it reduces the breadth of games available. If the world at large was almost completely devoid of sexism I could see the scope for arguing that it wouldn't harmfully impact as a rare example, but I think we can both agree the world isn't that way... and I frankly disagree that games are like that either. I still think a significant amount of games are severely sexist. Even if it's not the ridiculous booby level, a lot treat women like a device and severely underrepresent them.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

It apparently takes three times linking the to convince my girlfriend to listen to the podcast.
  11. Other podcasts

I guess I'll link this to peeps, since it's ending soon. A podcast called "We're Alive" is basically a serial drama about a zombie outbreak. It starts from the perspective of three guys in the army, but thankfully it's not written as overly celebratory of the military. In general it's kind of ropey writing, never stellar but the writers clearly don't want to totally follow the conventional guidelines of writing and like to disrupt expectations. I've found it enjoyable and compelling throughout the 3 seasons, so I think it's worth a listen. In a few weeks the final episode will be out there too so you could pretty much blast through if you feel like it.
  12. Life

Thats kind of insensitive... I mean, maybe it's just me but doesn't it seem obvious to you guys that the delay was the nuclear reactor saying it's not ready for a commitment and breaking up with SAM?
  13. Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread

This is the only way to prevent any Madden game being released next year. In general about Kickstarters, I actually think the public conception of them needs to be reframed. It should be seen as an outright risk in EVERY case, and the money your giving should be given in good faith that you trust the person involved/enjoy what they've produced so far. For example, I loved the trailer and kickstarter campaign for Hyper Light Drifter. I paid in early, and saw their pile of money sky rocket. Between the trailer and the kickstarter campaign feels of accomplishment, I got what I wanted. In return I donated money to a creator in the hope that it will allow them to progress with the kind of thing they make, because I enjoyed what they presented in the campaign. This has a lot to do with why I like the idea of Patreon more. Though that still has rewards creeping in as a basic entitlement to turn it from patronage to being a purchased subscription to special content.
  14. I Had A Random Thought...

I really try to not be overly strawmany or consider any viewpoint wrong, but I really just don't understand some of the concepts associated with Republicanism. All saw an American friend post an article about making more job security for part time workers. A friend of his commented saying "I hope this doesn't hurt small businesses too much." I don't get that as the initial reaction, because of course starting a business is hard and expensive but if you can do it you're better off than someone who packs basic protection because they're on irregular and unreliable part time work.
  15. General Video Game Deals Thread

About the Other Games, Cook Serve Delicious is actually pretty fun. It's a very simple premise but they really get a lot out of it so it's good for a play.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

I have a friend who is on Patreon (albeit for comics, not writing) and it does make a significant difference to her livelihood. She DID have a pre-existing fanbase but they had no regular avenue to pay her for making comics they read for free. She had alreaady gotten onto a site where she's paid significant money for her comics but that wasn't really enough to cover bills in itself, so I would say Patreon absolutely does make a difference. Yes it makes a difference to the people who do have an audience, but that's how the internet has always been. Patreon's not especially bad at it (ok discoverability on it is poor, but that's not strictly the same as Patreon being solely for large personalities).
  17. They need to do this, it symbolises the different layers to the characters.
  18. I lost it with the dream story "Because they think they can get away with it." because I imagined a world where skeletons were fighting for equal rights in a long complex struggle. But Chris and many other people were having their flesh privilege challenged. And part of the offensive anti skeleton rhetoric was that they were always farting while the honest hardworking flesh people had to take responsibility for it.
  19. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

People have talked up Divinity Original Sin a lot, so I was thinking about getting it when I have a bit more time and money, then people said it was a good price too, only $40! That's pretty sweet, only like €30 ish? I wasn't sure, so I went to check steam and gog.com. Nope, it's €40. Damn regional pricing. Just cause I live in Western Europe doesn't mean I have money. Most of my gaming money comes from being commissioned by Americans in dollars anyway...
  20. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Yeah, we got the full amount for the deep print (minus my $6 contribution) so we're good! I have it ordered, they should send me a digital proof in 1/2 days then it'll take approximately a week to post. I'll put any relevant updates here if they come up. EDIT: Got the proof and approved it! So the portrait's in the post on the way to the office anyway.

Oddly enough I think Papers Please is the game I think of that avoids the extreme morality trap, it's all about being neutral really.
  22. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Sweet! We're all set now for me to order it later this evening now.
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

I think the worst part is that the company clearly considers you revealing information like that to be worse than them failing their customers and blatantly lieing to them about it.
  24. Feminism

This is why I'm inclined to take the allegation as more likely true than false, just the fact that the possible victim has a more accurate definition of rape than Max. Max could possible know in his head that he did act in questionable consent, but think "That's not rape, she just regretted it later." or whatever other absolution fits for his situation. Given all that, I'd generally expect things like this to be true unless the accused seemed to be much more genuine and open and had a proper definition of rape in their head. I don't take it as he's clearly guilty but I err on the side of guilt, particularly since he responded to her in such a passive aggressive manner with the post.
  25. When recommending stuff in recent times I've taken to only giving information piece by piece until the person seems to have a spark of interest and then I stop so the work itself can try sell them on it instead of listening to my dumb fanspeak about it.
