I don't like the bitterness in something like coffee, which is why I bounce off of porters & stouts so hard. I don't like bitter flavors in general, which is why I don't like Pale Ales of any kind, as the hoppy bitterness flavor makes me gag.

Arthur is v cute. My cat mostly just hides under the bathtub when he hears the lawnmower.

I'm going to be very sad when summer ends and all the sours & wheat beers go away. At least the Oktoberfests are good, but it's a long winter of porters & stouts which I do not like.

I mean Sean kind of indicated they were shooting for August on Dota Today when he said that The International was around the time they would be hitting crunch time for release. I'm mostly worried that Sept - December of this year is pretty stacked with releases, (it's something I've seen Arthur Gies from Polygon tweet about a few times that indies should be wary of the remainder of this year), what with a new Metal Gear, Fallout, Mario Maker, another Destiny expansion, another Assassains Creed, Halo 5 Guardians, COD Blops 3, Star Fox, Just Cause 3, & Hitman all coming this year, and this is all just AAA stuff. -

https://twitter.com/GeeDee215 Gene Demby, one of my favorite internet people & head of NPR's Code Switch blog, had a bunch of goobers brigade his mentions and just thoroughly demolished them because he is a real journalist and just kept telling them that just because they've never thought about "journalistic ethics" before doesn't mean it isn't a real conversation between that's existed for generations. It is so good.

omg those little smushed faces and the first one's little tongue. I LOVE CATS SO MUCH. -
So Sunday night, Ewokskick & I played Contradiction together! They have recently changed the interface options, and judging from other's responses, greatly improved the experience. This game was delightful and bananas! We got stuck once at 93% and had to look up a hint, and we can talk about where we stumbled. James was a gift from the heavens, and I want a game just about his weird self. This was also the moment that I accidentally pressed the bottom left corner keys of my keyboard, and for some reason that restarted the game, losing our progress, sending us back to my last save which was at 19%! So that was awful. We ended up watching the last of the game on youtube in a lets play as it was already past midnight and we didn't want to redo what we had already done. Has anyone else played this? I highly recommend playing it with someone, like many people did with Her Story.

^^ I actually really like that they were unable to do the more game-y stuff. I think the enjoyment of the experience, even as a fan of adventure games, would have have been diluted if I was constantly getting stuck on some adventure game logic bullshit.

^^I've been watching this under the recommendation of all of y'all and some other internet sources that love it and omg it's so good and I love teen romance anime so much.

We have events with 18 million dollar prize pools and they show esports on espn, why doesn't anyone respect us???? ....oh. -
Voting systems in general are super interesting! ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow%27s_impossibility_theorem ) Basically it's impossible to design a voting system that doesn't leave something to be desired, and therefore you have to intelligently pick which weaknesses you think fit for your particular problem! I took a class in college that was crosslisted between the PoliSci department & the Math department that was all about the mathematics of voting systems & elections that was super cool, and talked about things like this a lot, and what's the best way to discourage people from gaming the system.

https://twitter.com/QuantumPope/status/634490025992962049 It all turned out okay, they went and got Jamba Juice together afterward. https://twitter.com/CharlieCYang/status/634530125938315264

Charlie didn't have a mic today because he was at work, so I bounced out, but yesterday when he was able to talk it was A+. He blew off Conrad (Cloud9's manager) for like an hour past when Charlie promised to hang out with him, so Conrad kept tweeting about how his feelings were hurt at the time..

The 2 most recent one sitting games I've played are Her Story & Contradiction. (I took a break from Contradiction to eat dinner on a Sunday evening) I really liked Digital: A Love Story http://scoutshonour.com/digital/ also

By refusing to show up as back up or sabotage (perhaps of a police cruiser), it's very easy to see how this could directly lead to your death as the police officer who broke the code.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_wall_of_silence Here's one of the news stories directly linked in that wiki from 2010 http://reason.com/archives/2010/10/18/americas-most-successful-stop It's pretty widely accepted that cops will defend & lie to protect other cops, and will ostracize and ruin the careers and lives of those who don't fall in line

I know R Crumb's name but literally nothing he's responsible for, just like I know HP Lovecraft's name but have never read anything he's written. I know their reputations, but no context to put them in, having never consumed their work. I did however buy 1989 and we have previously had big conversations about Taylor Swift in various Idle Thumbs threads. (It's what got me posting on the forums in the first place. Thanks Sean!)

I think that this is particularly true for pretty much everyone who didn't play football in jr high, high school or college. I'm a casual American Footbal fan in that I know the basic rules, and I know what many of the penalties are, but couldn't tell you individual player's positions and what those positions do outside of a very small subset of the most obvious. I'm a "diehard" fan in that I have followed the same team since I was 12 years old when I learned the rules of the game and watch every game I can. Also, I'm ride or die for Aui_2000, but that's a much more recent addition to my life.

Sean's t-swift opinions are the best & I genuinely enjoy when they come out. (Also I think the BBHMM video by Rihanna does the violent women thing way better by directing the violence at a man who stole from her. Also it doesn't add a totally dissonant rap verse to it for just the music video???)

I bounced off Dota hard, and continue to have no interest in the game itself. The game is so big that it's very hard to find an initial thread into grab onto to start to unravel this big knot, and when there's a community of dudes who would love to yell at me about being a girl it provides no incentive to even try. I am interested in team dynamics, and how teams/players do in tournaments, and overarching narratives of seasons, in much the same way a casual football fan often times doesn't want to learn positions and plays and things like that, but can still enjoy having it on the background and following stories on the front page of espn.

Sean's dad's reaction to the drone with a gun sounds a lot like what I'm sure my midwestern gun toting dad would think. Oh dads. you're my favorite.

I recently played Contradiction also, and if you want to talk about it with me (spoiler alert: I loved it) we have a thread: https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/10344-contradiction-the-best-of-hammy-actors/
