  1. Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield

One thing that I hope very badly that is kept from let's go is that they allow you to swap your team on the fly rather than having to go back to a pokemon center!
  2. Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield

The Pokemon direct was today! It looks like I expected, where it would be a traditional mainline Pokemon, without the simplifications that were in Let's Go as that meant to build a bridge from Go fans and get them into a console version so that they could play a mainline more easily. I think it looks super beautiful and the switch's beefier hardware makes it look prettier than it has on handheld!
  3. Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield

Exp Share has been a feature for a long time that you could turn on or off to increase/decrease difficulty. I think you'll find a lot more has changed than you thought. Things like abilities: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ability#List_of_Abilities Which can do things like, make eggs hatch faster or give passive boosts to stats or increased chance to inflict status effects. Breeding for stats, easier online trading & head to head matchmaking, team fights, and held items. Also things like day/night cycles and weather I think it's easy to say nothing's changed because generation to generation little changed, but over the course of 20 years the game has a lot more complexity if you're looking for it!
  4. Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield

Past trends have given us mainline pokemon gams around American Thanksgiving, so end of nov/beginning of december tracks I think the fact that pokemon games are mostly games for children they don't raise the floor of difficulty/complexity for the game very high. I'm excited to get more details over the coming months!
  5. It's got high production values and it's largely a low stakes interpersonal drama. If you're hoping or expecting characters to say "gee isn't it sexist how we acted in the 60s" you are never going to get that. It's well acted and the show depicts some despicable behavior sometimes without having anyone in universe chastise them. I think it was also very popular as a watch party show and people liked having it as an event to watch something together. If you don't like it, I don't think you're missing out on much of you quit it. It was important culturally and I think it's a pretty good show, but I don't begrudge anyone deciding they don't like it, especially if they give it a fair shake. P. S. Joan, Peggy, & Sally are the best characters on that show.
  6. Netflix Originals

extreme same. Prof & I have spoken before about the active disdain the show has for the Midwest and midwesterners at points. Really turned me off basically immediately, even if Tituss Burgess is a brilliant comedian.

Minding the Gap is up on Hulu. I think they have exclusive distribution rights right now?
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

Minding the Gap got an Oscar nom for documentary so the Academy at least agrees it's extremely good.

  15. Episode 455: Classic Year in Review: 2003

Rise of Nations was on a demo disk from CGW, of which my father had a subscription and the two of us got WAY into RoN separately but at the same time when he bought it based off of the demo. I rebought it on steam last year and that game still bangs.

I forgot about this movie, but after hearing this my interest is definitely re-piqued!
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

I watched Minding the Gap last night. It is a documentary about 4 young men who became friends through skateboarding and is a movie all about cycles of abuse & poverty in the dying city of Rockford Illinois. I love my home state and have been to Rockford many times for school events in high school. I saw so much of people I knew in this film. It's on hulu and I can't stop thinking about it. I highly recommend it for a look into what it's like living in a rust belt style city in the US as a young person.
  18. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Amy Sherman-Palladino - the creator and showrunner for Gilmore Girls, & showrunner for Bunheads filmed a pilot for Amazon called 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' which has just gotten picked up for 2 season. You can watch the first episode on Amazon already & I think it is maybe the best thing Amy has ever written. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/marvelous-mrs-maisel-gilmore-girls-creator-gets-two-season-pickup-at-amazon-992253
  19. Bloozzard

My theory is that people confuse vanilla wow being good with being 15 and playing a game with all your friends and having no responsibilities or obligations to do anything but play wow
  20. Netflix Originals

I am a sucker for romantic stories and half my favorite Netflix Originals have been romances (dramatic or comedic.) The other half is a mix of reality & documentaries/mockumentaries To All the Boys I've Loved Before a delightful movie about a young Korean-American girl who idealizes love but is unwilling to ever confess her feelings. Through wacky circumstances her love letters are sent out and the recipient of one decides to strike a deal with her to pretend to date in order to make his ex girlfriend jealous. It's very good, very sweet & I love seeing stories with WoC protagonists. Highly recommend. Meteor Garden this is a Taiwanese romantic comedy series based off of the manga Boys Over Flowers. There have been like 6 adaptations of this Manga between Japan, Korea & China/Taiwan. Plucky protagonist goes to school and refuses to cow to beautiful powerful boys. Love triangle, will they won't they (they will.) Not a depiction of what one might actually want out of a romantic relationship, but this is fiction baybeee. I love the chemistry that the main two actors have, and it's fun to watch the characters change over the course of the run. Definitely does the Asian Drama thing where all of the kisses are so awkward looking and zoomed in on. Terrace House: Boys & Girls in the City and Terrace House: Opening New Doors with an honorable mention to Terrace House: Aloha State - The only good non-competition reality show. 3 men and 3 women live in a house together and move out whenever they feel that it's time for them to move on. They get jobs, they form friendships, they flirt and date each other, they resolve conflicts by sitting down and talking to each other. It's remarkable. Nailed It - The episode where they had to sculpt a human bust out of cake made me laugh so hard I felt sick. This show is very good. Reality competition baking show where they're all bad amateur bakers. American Vandal - Mockumentary series about high schoolers. Season 1 is properly phenomenal. Season 1 is a young man accused of drawing dicks on the cars in the teacher's parking lot and the 'investigative journalism' needed to find the truth. The acting is sublime, the jokes are hilarious, and functions as a great commentary on current trends in documentary making (podcasts and videos.) Season 2 episode 1 is super gross, but the rest of the episodes are great. Season 2 is a young man admits responsibility for the a series of poop based pranks and his friend asks the documentary film maker characters to come in and exonerate her friend. Season 1 for dick jokes, season 2 for poop jokes. Hip Hop Evolution - hosted by one of my favorite rappers, Shad, a documentary of the history of hip hop. If you like the comic Hip Hop Family Tree or are interested in seeing what the development of rap looked like, wholehearted recommend.

Trevor Lacom who plays Colin Farrell's adorable chubby faced son is the best and only reason to watch season 2 to me.

  25. Looking for pacifist games

I played a lot of Reus which allows for some pacifist victories. Reus is a game where you're given a planet that you view via a cross section and have 3 giants that shape the landscape and the kinds of places you make determine what kinds of societies grow there. you have 4 biomes that you can create: desert, mountain, swamp, & grassland/prairie. Your societies can go to war if they're unhappy and your giants have abilities that can enhance the landscape or attack the people, and the people can attack the giants if they are unhappy. If you are smart about how you handle the happiness of your people though, they'll never fight and you'll be able to hit your win condition without any conflict at all.
