What if there were some kind of insane hiking mechanics, though? Like make walking kind of challenging or something, or make it similar to Miasmata. That could be fun.

Is It Possible for Long-Form Games to Have Good Endgames?
bkbroiler replied to Gormongous's topic in Video Gaming
That's what I'm picturing, and it sounds awesome. Do you still think at the end it would get boring, though? I mean, even people who but hundreds of hours into games like Civ and Sim City and CK2 say they don't particularly like the endgame. Should there be some sort of crazy win condition that lets you go out in a blaze of glory? Or is there no way to make the "end" of an inherently open ended game interesting? -
Definitely Journey. Also Chime is pretty darn relaxing, specifically the Brazil level. Such good music.

Is It Possible for Long-Form Games to Have Good Endgames?

Man, you didn't find the crazy blue gravity gun memorable? I would just sit by those little gravity lifts and toss soldier after soldier into them and watch them ragdoll. I'm interested in the builder endgame, because I agree than no game that I can think of has really done it well. Once you build everything you want to build, and make a big city or conquer all your enemies (Civ and CK2), you are just kind of waiting to win. Maybe if a game could add some sort of even higher element or planning to the game, where instead of just controlling one city you're controlling an entire world... I guess at some point you're just making different games. But there had to be a way to making endgames more interesting. Maybe it's just a matter of giving you more mechanics that are unlocked after you reach a certain population level. -

I couldn't stop cackling at work while reading that. My coworker thought I was insane. -
Day 4. http://youtu.be/qQl8hv9t-Qo I've been too busy to even see Day 3 yet. I have so much awesome documentary to catch up on!

I think I have one of those too, or something like it, and I've been using it for like 8 years. So another vote for Logitech!

Episode 3 is out. I hope instead of witnessing failure we witness some growth. Tim Schafer said there are some real meltdowns that happen, but didn't happen during the 2012 fortnight. So maybe we'll get that?

In this episode Steve Gaynor basically describes what will become Gone Home as a type of game he'd like to play. Weird!

The style of this game goes a really long way for me, like you guys have said. It's just a fun game to be in, regardless of what you're doing.

Congrats man! That's awesome. Also I'm adding you on Steam so I have more people to daily challenge against.

You've pretty much nailed my feelings to a tee. And with the big meetings things - totally. It's like a large group witnessing a disaster. The more people they are they less the individuals feel the need to help.

Walking Dead, Mark of the Ninja, Bioshock 2, The Cave vets form Campo Santo

if Campo Santo's first game doesn't bring me to tears like TWD season 1 then I will be very cross with The Idle Thumbz. There. I've said it. -
There's no reasoning behind it; perhaps I'm just a hateful person. Also I just realized that video is almost 8 hours long, and its going to be almost entirely ghosting, so I wouldn't watch it anyway. Still a really awesome accomplishment.

I just got into this game after trying for like a year (like every 6 months), and man, is it fun. I'm trying to create the Empire of Brittanica. I just became king of Ireland after like 5 generations of trying, and at one point losing about 5 counties. Luckily I was able to gain them back with my next ruler. One of the most satisfying thing I've done is grant a random courtier with the Content trait a county and just having him be the happiest little vassal ever. This game is so fun.

Wow, I had no idea you could get the plasma cannon either. Is... is Doxy in this video? I can't stand the way they talk to each other. There's something about it that creeps me out and makes me not like BANANASAURUS

New episode is up. Monitor THIS, buddy.

I impressed some people once in real life by using that "rhyme." That was a great day of living off someone else's talent.

"Uhh.... door hinge?"

The "Pirate I Was Meant To Be" song is probably my favorite part of any Monkey Island game. So hilarious. Also I think, like you said, the way the rhyming works with the insult fighting and how it clues you into the fight with the main villain is really cool. Enjoy Blood Island! I think it's a really cool location.

Congrats! I think it's always best to work towards the various goals in baby steps. You'll get City of Gold/Hell/Yama next time!

Harmonix's Chroma - The Rhythm Multiplayer FPS
bkbroiler replied to N1njaSquirrel's topic in Video Gaming
I think music integrated well into a level is something that can really heighten playing a game to crazy levels. Like the Lilith's club level from DmC. It's not even that extensive, but it just feels so cool playing it. Looking forward to seeing what Chroma turns out to be. -
Reading Pillars of the Earth (and comparing it to Game of Thrones)
bkbroiler posted a topic in Books
About halfway through, so please don't spoil it for me. I just got through some major shit in it, so I'm taking a small break from it. One interesting thing is I'm reading it right after finishing the Game Of Thrones series, and the differences in writing styles is pretty vast. Pillars is a much easier read. There are a lot of "That made him feel [blank]" statements that seem kind of odd sometimes. Whereas Game Of Thrones sort of took on the narrative point of view of each character so strongly that you couldn't really believe anything as true without cross referencing it with other character's thoughts, Pillars will even sort of broadly summarize what is happening. I'm not saying one way is better or worse, it's just interesting to read the differences. I'm reading this on a recommendation from my mom. She quit reading Game Of Thrones because she got sick of the way women are treated in that, which I could understand. To me that novel was about following the few specific women that were able to break out of the shitty way the medieval times treated women. However, she loves this book, which has one of the most disgusting scenes I have ever read that involves horrible treatment of women. Anyway, I'm really digging this book. I think it handles multiple viewpoints, a long timeline that skips years at a time, and presents the technical aspects of building a huge church in a really interesting way. Sorry if this post is kind of long and rambling, just wanted to get some thoughts out there. -
Suck it, slowbie!
