Excellent point, and the media propaganda is obviously working since I think of them as player union strikes when you are correct about ownership forcing the stoppage. It may also stem from my generally low opinion of unions (labor & trade mostly) - and associate stoppage of work with union side rather than ownership, but that is a separate discussion not for "sports" I did not follow the 2004/5 very closely and only got the wiki recap info when i was interested after the 2012 lockout. It is bonkers that the sport has come back (at least from my Chicago perspective looking outward to the league) from a half season in mid 90's, full missing season in 2004/5, abridged season 2012. I am sure statistics would show that some markets were slower to recover, if at all

Chicago Blackhawks won their third Stanley Cup in 6yrs the other night which is pretty incredible considering the changes to salary cap after the players union strikes, Also, after this year there is little chance the whole group is able to stay together the way contracts are ending. Very cool "dynasty" to be a fan throughout and have gone to some of the play off games in the past years. People around these parts are getting better about it (over the last 8yrs), but still long time hockey fans are all irritable about bandwagon fans joining the fray when they started playing well in 2008-9. It feels very video-game elitist which is annoying. Without the massive influx of people tickets, merch, and whatever other forms of income would still be lower NHL tier, these whiners complain that people watch not knowing the game, history, and just drive up ticket prices. As far I care - whats good for hockey and Chicago is good to have.

Fortunately I don't get the biting kind... More of the invade the house and be everywhere kind.I've had really good luck with this powder stuff the previous owners had left. It seems like serious business since says do not use on windy days and skin exposure requires 20 minutes of flushing, also after I put it out every spring ants disappear (which is a good indicator) If interested I'll snap a photo next time phone in garage
  4. DOTA 2

i've been playing at night solo to hit compendium challenges & 10-hero challenges - AP/RD modes. i'd welcome a team-mate, no matter experience/last played. Busby and I rolled a very weird team w/a techies trying to mine rosh @ level 1; our own team wasnt without issue - specifically two meks that were cast very sparingly steam: undermind9

Crown world Champion road You'll know it when you face it it was all consuming for a few nights for me
  8. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

It certainly turns up the dial after the first 2/3rds of the game. Some have commented that Co-Op gets significantly more difficult in these areas because of how narrow & precise some of the jumps/mechanics need to be. I've no off spring to co-op and test this, but i could see the frustration - especially when "carrying" a group through - and ESPECIALLY in the final level. I've gone back and done through star-world all 5-character finish on the pole - that final level and I are going to have fits though, it has to be one of the hardest Mario levels i've ever played. Reminiscent of 7.8 in SMB3 level frustration

Quickly sliding down and accidentally hovering to see that file name got me to laugh out loud.
  10. Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3KpSFHoBo4 This was just advertised on NBC during Stanley Cup finals. Outside of WoW don't think I've ever seen a Blizzard TV spot I wonder what kind of return they get on this, a CCG has completely different entry hurdles than a clash of clans or match 3 puzzler
  11. I bought everything but the ssd today, micro center had the processor $60 cheaper than new egg and then a $40 off mobo combo deal...so that was unexpected but no brained Then the ram I wanted went on new egg sale...so end of this week I will be playing computer mechanic, very excited
  12. DOTA 2

i bit last night and put $5 into the wallet and got the Spectre & Tusk sets. neither one a terrible interest to me, but in my hoarder fashion will keep & probably scrounge another few dollars to try again Positively i did get in both openings the 11 compendium level boosts...so that was pretty great. Negatively there was sales tax so to get all 10 chests you'd actually have to put in +/-$22 & steam only has 5/10/25/50/100 denominations for general wallet add video games
  13. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Ah ya, user name explanation time Undermind is a relic of StarCraft time when I tried to use the handle "overmind" in our local play (AOL never let me on bnet, weird). Anyways, an uncle or cousin said "you suck, more like undermind" as a dumb joke. Its stuck and now my unilateral username Wow character though was EdmndFtzgrld named after my favorite beer from Great lake's brewery in Cleveland...and the ship wreck in Lake Erie (also see Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) In retrospect my entire internet identity is dumb, but probably never going to change. On the topic pro esport players and their selected names have always baffled me. These people are tied sometimes to a silly teenage name before being famous and now stuck with a name like Ferrari, god, or sunsfan. Seems like that is a minor hurdle to the entry point for muggles
  14. Steam Box

Valve is accepting Pre-Order's for their Controller, Link, and two "Steam Boxes" http://store.steampowered.com/hardware Early Launch - Oct 16, November 10 full release The controller & link are almost automatic year-end purchases for me, if they play well together. I'd like to see a little more depth spec come out for the set-top boxes - on the Gamestop website they have different tiers - i3/i5/i7 and hard drive sizes - but no actual hardware specs. I understand they are trying to make these console-baby simple, but the PC master race has much more relevant info than just a processor tier & how many gee-bees it holds. Also, Gamestop appears to be the official partner for brick & mortar store pick up (hopefully controller demos too). A little surprising, I figured Best Buy would out-bid anyone else in an attempt to stay relevant.
  15. I have been shopping again for PC upgrades. My hesitations relate to the cost...and that most of what I play is 2D indie games and Dota that don't need anything special to run My current rig is mostly from Jan 2009 but still works great. The main storage, optical, case, and PSU are still good and will remain until they burn up Current parts on the chopping block - Asus P6T Intel i7-920 (phenomenal chip, but not going to get another LGA 1366 mobo) 12 GB Tricannel ddr3 1600 Slow old SSD Intended Replacements - i7-4790K Z97-A (the Z97-AR would also be great if it comes back to sale) 16GB DDR3 2400 (want 2x8 to keep room open to double later) Samsung 850 Evo Current video cards - hope to not have to replace x2 Radeon HD 6870 1gb each I feel so out of touch on new processors since I last went shopping for one in 2008. I think the processor is still doing ok - i could overclock it with some case modifications but the motherboard looks to be my bottleneck now. I'd like this to be a build that lasts another 4-6 yrs (minus video card), of course no one can predict what future is bringing, but does this seem solid and somewhat future proof? Anyone who has gone shopping recently or keeps up with this a little more - input would be much appreciated. I think even just the mobo/processor/ram will greatly increase my performance such that I can run anything new at moderately high settings for a while with my xfire cards. If some ace card drops in price significantly next year I'd be looking to upgrade then So please tech enthusiasts, am I under buying or over doing it for a long term solution. It is ~$650 for all my wish list if I bought now, probably could get under 600 if i watch the deals for a month or two.
  16. Idle Food - Cooking!

This works pretty good too - Garlic Roller. Also some of the larger garlic presses will work with the peels on, cuts down on yield a little bit - but much quicker not to get into another uni-tool situation. but if you want to avoid the peeling this is a fairly small tool that works pretty good, its the same idea as the smashing and shaking trick but keeps the peels in the tube I am an Alton Fan-Boy as well - but am more inclined to get a specialty tool for unique instances if it truly will improve efficiency and get enough use. Being said, my wife has some asinine tools that are never used and get on my short list of next kitchen clean out. Regarding the garlic press and roller - if I can avoid chopping small garlics I usually will
  17. Meow.

oh poor little guy. Does he normally do well with people in the house? Obviously for his safety the bathroom is the best bet, but some cats dont give any cares to strangers walking in. When we were looking for places we did a walk through with our real estate agent and there was a cat on his cat-tree chilling, not even a hiss at three strangers walking through Whenever we have work done at the house all 3 get locked in our bedroom. If it is an all day affair they get their water, food, and litter box. We always feel so bad and end up going to visit and making our work take even longer my eldest is 50/50 on people, the youngest wants to observe and meet, and the third will hide behind the toilet until everyone is gone - will only come out for my brothers after a few hours and gets hungry
  18. DOTA 2

yup, see how little i know. vega were seemingly out classed in their navi games. i wonder if that BS was a troll pick to see if they could win with it...before getting serious for 3 in a row
  19. Cartoons!

Accidentally caught "Golan the Insatiable" tonight on Fox after their usual Sunday animation block. A 2nd grader girl from Minnesota who is obsessed with the occult/goth stylings summons Golan and has his tome of spells; some jokes, picked on minnesota, looks nice - everything i go for in a cartoon I thought Adult Swim was on because of the art style and sense of humor. My wife thinks its stupid, which usually means (i think) its great. I dont know how many eps they were contracted for, but after their Fox run ends hopefully it'll get picked up on netflix or CN - assuming they have enough jokes to get past the first few episodes of chaos
  20. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

im all for hard boss fights that require multiple passes to figure out. But I am on SAM and SBM's side here, playing the whole way up to the end on your first handful of games feels like you are barely making it along, doing cool missions or getting burned for bad decisions. Maybe you've made it with almost no weapons or missiles and mostly avoided conflict (which makes for a cool experience and narrative of your run) - then last level flagship and you're fun run is toast in a few seconds. Not to change to a rogue-like-lite-like comparison but Isaac is my jam for perma death - the first time i got to Mom i knew it was some sort of uber boss...i did some damage, got stomped on, hand out the side, crap - dead. But! she is totally killable on your first show up with a great run, or at least your second/third after you figure out her general movement patterns can survive with less optimal items. The other bosses in the womb, cath, sheol, chest are all similar - probably going to lose to each respective boss on your first-ever sighting but can learn and make some adjustments. Ive gotten to the FTL last boss a handful of times and get spanked every time. I dont even know if i've learned anything except that i love the game until the boss. This talk of multiple phases is news to me and even more aggravating knowing that if i ever cleared the first i'd be super jacked only to get crushed in the next. If i make it there again i may just open all the doors as a martyr rebellion to such a difficulty spike
  21. Splatoon is Ink-redible

ive tried every weapon style and keep coming back to the blasters. the varied grenade types also is spectacular, although i'd like better options for combining a weapon, specific grenade, and special ability. maybe im a scrub, but skate park is my least favorite. the "bowls" make it really hard to assault, and a better positioned player can usually mow you down. also makes lobbed grenades difficult to even clear the cusps Warehouse on the other hand is a jam. i love the symmetry and side access with the grate-inkling drop. those games usually end up with a mad fight in the middle or some backdoor moves to try and cover up the last 1/3rd of the other team to compensate for a sacked middle
  22. DOTA 2

correct. after 4 anchors beats up on vega (who totally out played and came from behind against NIP) it'll be Navi for first or second (and then in the wild card play in)
  23. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

today was really wonky for games. i was getting dropped and even had a few searches end in some error code which was midly frustrating. Playing mostly PC MP games where dropping out just means joining back in this interface is aggravating. i wasnt expecting a BF style list of servers, but it doesnt seem to me that they care about region or level grouping ill take my skate park distaste to the other thread though
  24. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

theres a power save mode that seems to drop display even darker, can get ~4-6hrs then (dont forget to turn off rumble or any of that other silly auxiliary stuff)
