  1. Movie/TV recommendations

The alley fight is glorious, as is the general conceit. Most of the movie is not infiltrating the secret base though, and that's a bummer. If the first hour was condensed to like 30 or 40 minutes it would be so much better.
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

Oh for sure. But The Guest is a love letter to all the best bits of that scene and to label it's influences as schlock seems awfully unfair and reductionist to me.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

B movie cheese and low budgets are not schlock! I feel very strongly about this! I will say They Live kind of sucks. The pacing is goddamn atrocious. The Thing though? Fucking masterpiece.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

The Guest was great and it's influences are far from schlock. Go watch Assault on Precinct 13! And everything else Carpenter put out in the 80s! Anyway, the Criterion sale is going on at Barnes and Noble so I got a couple more blurays. In super excited to finally watch The Seventh Seal! Yes!
  5. Non-video games

I'm cool with some tech stuff in games (Space Alert) but generally I really prefer a boardgame to be a boardgame and not a video game. When you add a screen, why bother with the tactile stuff at all?
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Mark Kern is a fucking idiot. Holy Christ. Edit: new page hell yeah peep this quality content.
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

I got to the good bits of Steven Universe this weekend and It's really hitting all my buttons. The songs in this are great, ad the art style is adorable and the characters are fun and sweet. It's great!
  8. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

I'm playing through the NV DLC currently and digging Old World Blues pretty well. I totally should grab some texture mods or something because Lord these games are ugly. Also spending more time in the mojave made me remember how ridiculous this engine is. Most of the time if I can get on a rock or ledge I can take out pretty much anything easily, especially wildlife and melee dudes. Hopefully they fix that in 4 what with the jet pack and all.
  9. DOTA 2

I kinda want some crazy regal dom shit for QoP, don't think she needs a total model rework though. But really, juggernaut has so many goddamn cosmetics already. Fuck that guy.
  10. Other podcasts

I'm going to recommend Crate & Crowbar again because it's really great. Latest episode had a pretty rad discussion of the new Batman game. Check it out!
  11. Feminism

Of course you can criticize E3 for not being diverse enough. You have to start somewhere. Maybe the industry at large is so homogenous because there are mostly white dudes acting as the faces of game development? Maybe seeing more women at press conferences would encourage more women to make a career out of games? If you use "well it IS all white guys who make video games" as an excuse then it becomes a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Hah, I also just made the connection between those two Kern stories. That Reddit post pretty much paints him as a sociopath, which seems like a good fit for gamergate. Also, apparently the newest batman game has a dig at gamergate in the form of a bio on The Riddler talking about his attempts to start #crusadegate.
  13. Feminism

Argobot, yes! A quick rundown of why the comic wasn't great would have been wonderful. I also saw it framed as "maybe mad max fury road wasn't the feminist masterpiece people thought," which is just so infuriating. And yeah a lot of it seems to be critiquing the depiction of a fictional postapocolyptic dystopia which strikes me as kind of wrong-headed. Ugh.
  14. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

In addition to the Steam Idler thingy to get card drops, I can highly recommend Steam inventory Helper, a chrome plugin in that allows you to sell things on the steam marketplace in bulk. Great for clearing out your digital closet.
  15. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

This might be the first time I made it through a Steam sale without spending a single cent since like 2009. I already have everything! HELP.
  16. Feminism

Here's another "reviewing E3 fashion" article that seems to be more than just snark on how bad all those dudes on stage were dressed. Also, I find it kind of funny how defensive and mad people get about these things. If you're going to present on stage at a huge press conference, wear something that doesn't look like garbage. It's SO RARE for dudes to be told chastised about their wardrobe in any serious manner. Women get that shit ALL THE TIME.
  17. Mirrors Edge at E3

My main beef with guns in the first game was that the window for disarming required you to be absolutely precise with the timing. Just make it so you can hold the disarm button as you're running at a dude to disarm them! It would be great!
  18. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

this is why I still don't have Dishonored or the X-Com expansion.
  19. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

I've been holding out pretty well so far. Haven't bought anything. If I manage to make it through the whole thing without picking up a game I may somehow do some crazy brain gymnastics and end up cobcincing myself to preorder a steam controller. As it is now I've got a decent sized backlog that I'm still actively playing through and the prices on games I want aren't quite "holy heck that's a STEAL" for me yet.
  20. DOTA 2

Whoa this new update looks slick as hell. I'm just totally, thoroughly impressed. Can't wait to get some customs going. http://blog.dota2.com/2015/06/dota-2-reborn/
  21. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

So what is everyone hoping to snag? I could use some recommendations fresh on my brain. I'm keeping an eye out for Crypt of the Necrodancer and Invisible Inc mainly. I have a massive backlog that I am acutally sort of putting time into lately instead of just playing dota. I'll probably be skipping most triple a stuff this time around unless there's a REALLY good deal on like Dishonored or Alien Isolation. Any smaller games that have come out in the past year or so and are going to be on sale for the first time? Kerbal maybe?
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

AV Club comments are pretty scattershot these days. The TV Club regulars are usually pretty good though, same with the gameological regulars. I've been watching Steven Universe and goodness it's adorable. I don't love it like I do Adventure Time, but I'm only a few episodes in. AT feels like it was made for me, while SU skews younger and has more of an anime-ish influnce in terms of being about a super team that protects a village/the world. The art and music are lovely as heck. The piano theme is just wonderful.
  23. Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

That joke was made about a billion times on twitter the second they announced it was going to be called Windows 10. It looks like the upgrade will just install itself directly on top of your current configuration to me, does that sound right? I was kind of looking forward to having an excuse to format and clean up my computer a bit.
  24. Goofy Thumbs inhouses could be fun. Are custom games in yet? That would be a good way to prevent ragin'.
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

Rewatched Only Lovers Left Alive this weekend and it's still great. The central premise of vampires being immortal and therefor having infinite free time to study/create art is just so delightful to me. It help that Tilda Swinton is a fucking goddess and kills lines like "I'm a survivor baby' like no one's business. Such a great soundtrack too. Really a great hangout movie, the characters are wonderful. I need to check out more Jarmusch probably, huh?
