  2. Ferguson

So anonymous hacked the KKK's twitter account and released their member's information after the Klan made threats to Ferguson protestors. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/anonymous-launches-attack-ku-klux-klan-article-1.2013559
  3. BBC World Book Club

BBC World Book is great. May I also recommend Bookworm: http://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/bookworm He did an amazing interview with Richard Flanagan http://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/bookworm/richard-flanagan-the-narrow-road-to-the-deep-north Not a book cast, but Forum with Michael Krasny did an hour long interview with Colm Toibin http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R201410281000
  4. Serial - The Podcast

I'm going to have to go with Mangela on this for now. I'm still formulating how I feel about this show.
  5. Books, books, books...

Love that book! LOVE IT! When I first discovered Kowloon Walled City, I became hooked on it, fascinated. The idea that people lived there, "thrived" there, lived full lives, being born there in such a compact, claustrophobic area... ALl the pictures I've seen and how the city was structured, I'm in awe of it. It also helped that I was a huge cyberpunk fan growing up, and when I discovered Kowloon Walled City, it was something that I only saw in the literature, films and games in real life.
  6. Twin Peaks Rewatch 6: Cooper's Dreams

Don't know if anyone post this but Observer is doing a Twin Peans re-watch: http://observer.com/tag/revisiting-twin-peaks/
  7. anime

My first Miyazaki film was Mononoke. I came across it while channel surfing. I was new to the anime world--Vampire Hunter D was my intro--and I was watching anything I could at the time. So when I came across it, I was enthralled by it. I ran to whatever blank tapes I had, put it in my VHS and started taping. I never knew that animation could be as amazing as what I was watching. Growing up with GI Joe and the like--I saw them as re-runs, not when they came out--was my childhood idea of animation could be. Then out-of-nowhere anime like Vampire Hunter D, Akira, and Mononoke came into my life and just blew me away. It was those three--plus a mixture of Cartoon network's 90s shows and Pokemon/Monster Rancher--that put the love of animated movies in me. Just writing this out I'm awash in childish glee and nostalgia. And like most artists, Miyazaki's older works are better than his newer. I love Porco Rosso because of its aviation and studio system film feel and Nausicaa because of it's Métal Hurlant, 70s Sci-Fi comic and Moebius vibes and aesthetics. The more I think about it, it's the Moebius aesthetics that the film has, as why I fucking love it so much; you can see Moebius's line everywhere in that damn film; it's practically a tribute to their friendship and his work!
  8. anime

I have a confession to make: I fell asleep during Totoro and have never seen it in its full.
  9. anime

Holy shit! I did not know that.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

oh, wonderful. I've forgotten all about that.
  11. Cartoons!

Nice little short: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/cartoon-brew-pick/augdemented-reality-2-by-marty-cooper-105305.html And a new Song of the Sea Trailer And I'm also thinking about going to this: http://www.cinefamily.org/films/animation-breakdown-2014/
  12. anime

Wind Rises was a good film, but I disliked the film's treatment of Nahoko Satomi: as just a totem of inspiration for Jiro and dying to further move the plot and Jiro's art. Also, how it deals with art: as this thing that can be separated from what it's used as. I know that was one of the main themes of the film, but I feel Miyazaki thinks that art can without any context(?) maybe. I need to re-watch it and flesh my ideas out. And speaking of Ghibli, I was talking to Tegan yesterday, and we both agreed that Isao Takahata's films are the best. Takahata's films are better than anything that the Miyazakis have done and have the level of nuance and storytelling chops that you wish the Miyazakis could do. This was further enforced when I saw The Tale of the Princess Kaguya this month.
  13. anime

It's not bullshit and that's one of the big reasons why I fucking LOVE that show. The magical, paranormal and spiritual that runs through the show never felt forced or out-of-place; it seemed to me the most logical place to go when a technology like that is commonplace. I mean, just look at the Internet, and all the net-urban legends, creepypasta and taking old conspiracy/zoological "theories" and giving it a more elliptical or kaleidoscopic scope to it.
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

You're right. His decline started with Inception and it's been downhill ever since; I'd say he and Fincher's work, while beautiful to look at and technically great, really haven't been up to par with their earlier work. I hate to sound like that person, but I think it's true, I'm still going to see Interstellary because I love me some visually beautiful films, but I don't want to deal with the story; maybe, I'll bring my headphones and just take it all in visually.
  15. Life

When I started reading this, I thought it was going to have a twist revelation: you are that guy!!!
  16. anime

I enjoyed CWCLVFDB, but I have to agree with you. You won't be disappointed about Garden; I consider it a throwback to his earlier works. Well, I started re-watching Real Drive and Dennou Coil. I'm a couple episodes in both series and it's come back to me as to why I love these two series: both dealing the eventual blending of virtual/augmented reality with our reality, which is used to explore its characters and the world around them.
  17. Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay

Here go Sean: http://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/bookworm/john-darnielle-wolf-in-white-van A nice little interview with the author of Wolf in White Van.
  18. The Official Video Game Music Corner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a366iV-o3vA God, I love this OST
  19. Oh man, I remember this. I remember watching it for the first time when I was young and being freaked out. Those feelings followed me when I first played Majora's Mask and definitely added to the overall somber and paranoia tone/atmosphere.
  20. Life

Hey man, I'm so happy you're doing better. I've been done this road many at times--depression and lack of sleep--and I've tried to kill myself twice. Once was hanging, but the thing I was hanging on broke and I fell on my ass; I had a good laugh after that. Second was pills, but as I waited, I decided against it, threw up and went to the ER. I battle with melancholia, internalized-racism, and tangs of gender dysphoria almost everyday, and I'm always surprised when I feel happy or just neutral because I almost never feel that. Every now and then I get heavily depressed and suicidal. Those feelings were grew whenever I had friends killed themselves. As of lately I've learn to incorporate these feelings to my daily life. I've also gotten help and every now and then take a few Xanax--low doses--to calm myself down. It's hard as shit though, but I have a safety net--therapy, loving parents and friends--that can help me back up when i fall down. don't give up hope and my heart goes out to you. Actually, I've thought of going to a mental health treatment center after this semester was done. But I decided against it and go to Cincinnati to see my parents and hopefully calm down there.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I know it's horrible, but I can't help to laugh at the insanity of it all. I feel this something out of an absurdist novel.
  22. Books, books, books...

When I just focus on one thing, I try to finish it as soon as possible because I get heavily immersed in it and want to know what happens next. So, when I read 2 or more, I can make that feeling last; I want to make that feeling last. I want things to be left unknown for a bit or for me to crave what will happen. So, that's why I read more than one book at a time. It also allows me to reflect a bit more on the narrative, themes and characters or ideas.
  23. Idle Thumbs 183: The Anonymouses

I'm so happy that someone else know about this; the DVD is something that should be seen by all human beings, it's that great.
