  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I just watched The Zygon Inversion, and I was surprised by how much I cared about what was going in that episode. That speech by Capaldi...really great stuff! I guess Season 9 is a very mixed bag overall.
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

It's interesting indeed. Season 4 is my least favorite of all the NuWho ones, though Donna is my favorite companion.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

Sheesh, season 8 was the best run of NuWho to date. I haven't finished season 9, but it had two episodes back to back that didn't resonate emotionally at all (I'm talking about episode 4 and 5). The villain in episode 4 was introduced a few minutes before he was defeated,...I dunno. Season 8 was the best one of NuWho for me because of its focus on character development. In season 9, in its first 5 episodes at least, Clara is barely a character anymore, and there's not much of a development in her relationship with the Doctor. I watched episode 6 a few weeks ago, and it was alright, though not as good as its premise would have lead you to believe. It was too much of a farce for me, too reliant on comedic relief. Oh well...
  4. Life

I don't think it would be a problem at all to just get by with English in Germany. Heck, an American friend of my sister once said that it was hard for her to learn German in Germany because everyone immediately tried their best to answer her in English! The average grasp of the English language that Germans possess is pretty good, of those of at least mid-tier education at least. Nevertheless, I certainly love my language, so I hope that sooner or later you will fall in love with it, too! ^^
  5. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

I'm very happy with how the new graphics look. We've gotten way worse looking remakes before, I would say.
  6. Movie/TV recommendations

I don't think it's bad, but exaggerated in a Lynchian and soap opera manner. Twin Peaks is somewhat a soap opera, therefore it takes a lot of cues from the style of acting typical for the genre. Also, the guy who plays the Sheriff isn't the best actor, or the one who plays James...but I feel that in the Lynch directed episodes both actors work well within their constraints. Otherwise lots of excellent actors are part of the cast, like Ray Wise, Grace Zabriskie, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, Richard Beymer, Peggy Lipton, Piper Laurie, Al Strobel...actually, too many to list. Also, I second the recommendation for Twin Peaks Rewatch!

I rather like this article that examines how toxic masculinity might play into mass shootings: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2015/1002/Many-school-shooters-one-common-factor-a-warped-view-of-masculinity Oh yeah Milo, feminists are so bad for wanting men to be able to express other emotions than anger...
  8. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

For me it was the adventure game I had the most fun with. And I was positively surprised by the variety and intricacy of the puzzle design. Adventure games are weird. ;P I played with a friend, though.
  9. I think the previous version of the Idle Thumbs theme song (from 151 to 199) would be a better fit than the recent one.
  10. I'm really impressed by the trailer. I hope that I can convince a friend to play this with me. ^^
  11. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

May I recommend to you the excellent first episode of the podcast Lexicon Valley about this very topic? To quote the episode description: There's also a transcript on the page if you prefer reading. ^^
  12. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I certainly know that feeling in general. That one, too. So weird, right? Sometimes I feel like classic adventure games really are an evolutionary dead end or at least incredibly hard to design, considering that one puzzle can make one person (like me) feel really smart and another really annoyed or dumb. The quality of implementation, clues dispension, rules transparency, etc. certainly plays its part. But with classic adventure games I feel like it can never be good enough for everybody.
  13. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I always feel a tinge of sadness when I hear that people don't enjoy the puzzles in Act 2 as much as I did. Maybe it helped that I played the game with a friend? Possibly. Besides, I loved the variety and I can't think of another (part of an) adventure game that gave me so many epiphanies that made me feel clever in so short a time. And yes, I also very much enjoyed the rewiring puzzles.
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

Looks like the kind of movie I wanna see!
  15. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I'll see him on 19th September together with two friends who I infected with a serious case of Sufjanitis. I'm already pretty excited, though I fear I will be too worried about an upcoming exam to really get the most out of it. But if anyone can let me forget the stress for just a moment it's Sufjan. Also, I fear it would have been better if I hadn't already seen much of his tour on YouTube. Ah well, I'm just too goddamn excited!!! \o/
  16. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Me likey! The first track at least, which is all I've listened to so far. It's always nice when mainstream pop doesn't make me feel apathetic, annoyed or bored.
  17. Sense8

I'm so happy to find out that Sense8 was renewed for another season!!! :woohoo: That is all.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

When I follow discussions like this here I wish I were a faster and more disciplined thinker. I struggle with these arguments you linked to, JonCole, and my disagreement is probably not entirely justified considering how I think about them. In my mind I'm very defensive about it and move the goalpost almost immediately. And I'm not sure why, because when I express myself through art, I always tend to make use of my local culture anyway. Okay, back to learning....
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It wasn't even criticism in any form, it was an obversation. That the earrings look like the No Man's Sky logo. Another person thinks they might be too heavy on their ears. And those weren't observations that ignored what Anita had to say in a presentation in favor of merely commenting on her appearance, it was a comment about a gif of her munching popcorn and of another of her and Zoe Quinn doubtfully looking at each other! Anyway, obviously I disagree with you. I'll bow out now because I shouldn't take part in a discussion I can't invest myself in. I'll never learn...
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think people comment about Anita's fashion here because she's a woman, but because she has a good fashion sense that sticks out. Note also that nobody criticizied her fashion here, one person merely said that they wouldn't like to wear such heavy earrings because of the weight they would put on their ears. So...this discussion befuddles me.
  21. Recently completed video games

Tomb Raider IV, too, I think? And Desperados. The demos of Monkey Island, Freddy Pharkas and Space Quest VI have environments that are also part of the full game, but writing and puzzles are different I think. I'm surely forgetting some. What were the other entries in the gallery of great standalone demos in the Stanley Parable demo? I forgot...
  22. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

So I did misunderstand you! Sorry. You meant to say then that in English the p in psychology is silent? Huh, good to know. ^^
