  1. Feminism

I have started to become annoyed by the idea that all we need to do is have more female CEOs, more women in government, a female president etc. Was Margret Thatcher's government great for women? Is Sheryl Sandberg a feminist? Obviously equality is extremely important, but equality at the top won't solve everything. A lot of the ideas I hear seem to have fallen into the classic liberal, middle class white women trap of earlier eras. It also feels like trickle down feminism. A higher minimum wage, universal healthcare and a better education system would in my mind do far more than a few more female business leaders.
  2. Can Game Mechanics be Ingrained with Culture/Ideology?

You don't get the same bonuses for having undeveloped land vs. building a park. City sims also push urban sprawl a lot. I want to make a city in Skylines that is all apartment buildings, tons of public transit and bike trails.

Does anyone here use Windows 10 on their gaming PC? I know there were some issues at launch, just wondering if they are getting resolved.

Far Cry 3: Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon: Far Cry 4: Turns out Far Cry 2 didn't have hostile animals, so no lions or cheetahs.

That is awesome, congrats! I highly recommend making a 'Happy Folder; in your email inbox. Every time someone thanks me for my work, or tells me how valuable I am I save those emails in that folder, its a nice reminder that people appreciate you and the work you do. Now for something completely different: Earlier this week as I was walking to work I saw a homeless man sitting outside in below freezing weather and I came to a realization: it would be an extra $75 on rent, an extra $50 a week for food and a few hundred a year for other items for him to live with me. He would never be homeless, hungry or cold again. I felt awful about this and still do, I am actively making life decisions that harm others. There are people who this year will make more money than I will in a lifetime. I feel bad about the one or two people I could easily help, but am not. How many people could they be helping? Do they feel any guilt at all? There is enough money in the world to insure that every human could have a decent standard of living. Humanity could live in a world mostly free of crime, of war, of violence, of not being able to afford the basics of life. We as individuals, as a society, as a species fail over and over to help. I recently joined a political organization committed for fighting for a living wage for all, universal healthcare and racial equality. I don't know if its enough, but I now more than ever need to try and make my fellow humans lives better, because too few of us even care.

  9. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

I made this recipe: https://food52.com/recipes/28493-fresh-corn-salsa-over-savory-crepes (I will probably use Food52 for most of these ) My crepes, while not nicely round (I lack the correct pan) were the right consistency and tasted good, the lemon zest is a nice touch. I might try orange zest in pancakes sometime. Overall I am happy with how things turned out. picture of the final product below:

  11. I Had A Random Thought...

I debated putting this post in the life thread due to somberness, but since its more of a general question than a thing that happened I will put it here. I never know what to say to people who are having a rough time, like a relative dies, they lose or don't get a job, they get dumped, they or someone they care about gets a bad diagnosis, they are going through a depressive episode etc. This may be because whenever any of these things happen no-one has ever said something that made me feel better. What usually does make me feel better is reminding myself that people care about me and that I don't live in Syria so my life could be way worse and I should stop whining. Occasionally my office will send cards to coworkers who had something bad happen in their life. I never know what to write in cards like that. If its family, a close friend or a significant other all I know to do is say "I'm sorry" and hug them and tell them I'm there if I need them, this feels inadequate. But with acquaintances and coworkers I have no idea what to do. Anything I say or write just feels hollow because I know someone saying that to me wouldn't really make me feel better. Thoughts?
  12. Games with Dead Cats in Them

There is a killable cat in Fallout 4, several in witcher 3. Also Far Cry 2-4 have killable big cats.

  14. Can Game Mechanics be Ingrained with Culture/Ideology?

I think this can be most evident in strategy games and city builders. Crusader Kings is an obvious example where the developers are trying to somewhat accurately represent medieval cultures in game mechanics, it gets more and more complex as they have added Islamic, Byzantine, Steppe Horde, Indian and Pagan playable factions to the initial Christian European. It is fairly obvious that they designed the game as a Western European Feudalism simulator and have had to make sacrifices and odd tweaks to get the other cultures to function. I would love to play a grand strategy game developed by one of these other cultures as it could create a very interesting experience. Similarly I feel like some of the differences between Sim City and Cities: Skylines are down to having an American development team and a Finnish one respectively. There are different understandings of how cities are built and should look. I really wish there were more games coming out of non-Western European studios because I think we may not have a good answer because of the video game world being dominated by the US/Europe and Japan. However some of the base mechanics of Western and Japanese games are now baked into the idea of what a video game is, and it could be hard to separate these concepts. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Witcher feel different than similar Western European games, but contain a lot of the same base ideas. I may return to this post and add some edits as my ideas clarify more.
  15. Crusader K+ngs II

I am pretty sure they are trying to represent the fall of pagan religions by making it hard for them to compete late game. However if you reform I think you get most of the standard mechanics.

Hi! First time poster, long time listener. Me and six of my friends have developed an amazing iOS game and I wanted to share it here. The twelve person dev team has worked for over 500 hours this year to get the game ready for release. You play as a great warrior who lost his memory while traveling through time to stop the princess from being in another castle. The game play can best be described as roguelike with a RTS twist and elements of Angry Birds. The game is available on Blackberry World for 7.28 ZWD Link: Google Play Store I hope you guys like it! oops forgot to post a screenshot!

  21. Just Cause 3 had graphics issues at launch, but I think they have mostly been resolved now? I never had issues because I got a 970 the same day it came out. I think it also got knocked for the unlockables being stuck behind shitty side missions. It is still one of my favorite gaming experiences of 2015. Also JC3 is surprisingly good on gender. Both factions have female soldiers mixed in and wearing reasonable clothes. Most of the competent story characters are women.

    Edit:
  23. Crusader K+ngs II

Its definitely exaggerated in CK2, more kids survive than probably should so there are more chances to marry children off to multiple dynasties. Similar to how much conquest CK2 has, it seems way to frequent. I think there were definitely concessions to gameplay in some of the mechanics. I forgot to mention the Habsburgs original rise to power was through multiple marriage alliances.
  24. Crusader K+ngs II

Henry the First had a daughter marry the Holy Roman Emperor and another Daughter marry the King of Scotland. Henry the Eighth was originally married to the Aunt of the Holy Roman Emperor, who was previously married to Henry's older brother. His first Daughter married the King of Naples and Sicily. His sister was married to the King of Scotland. Another Sister was married to the King of France. Maria Theresa was Married to the Holy Roman Emperor. her children include eight Archduchesses, two Holy Roman Emperors, two Dukes, two Archdukes, a Queen of Naples and Sicily and Marie Antoinette the Queen of France. These are just some good examples. It may not have been common, but it did happen. Edit: Turns out wikipedia has a page on this topic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_intermarriage#Europe
