I finished Metal Gear Solid: Grond Zeroes. As in, I've finished every mission, but I'm not quite done with it. I really enjoyed it, it's an absolute blast to move around that base, marking enemies, taking them out, avoiding them or causing complete havock. As a sand box game it's right up my alley. The challenges are pretty engaging too. I'm going to try and 100% it because it's just that much fun to play. I think I've spent around 10 hours with it, and I'm still going. People complaining it was too short are clearly full of shit.

I remember that feeling when I left my WoW guild because I couldn't deal with playing on American schedules and working in the UK. Sucks.

I don't remember the markers in Zero. I felt like I steam rolled through that game because it always made sense where to go. When it comes to googling things, I try to avoid it but that section (you can spot it around 52:15 in the bottom right hand section of the video Badfinger posted) drove me nuts. I spent an hour looking for where to go, only to find it's a bullshit wall you can walk through that has no indication that you can do so. Nothing else in the game is like that! I'm still pissed that it's there, it's impossible to know unless you ask someone or randomly bump into it. That design decision implies to me either a) there was info out there that people would eventually find, or that the creators expected people to bump into walls randomly to figure out where to go, which is plain unreasonable.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

Wow, thanks. That's comprehensive. I assume youtube has plenty of guides on how to actually assemble all this stuff. -
I was thinking more, and I believe it's because I never once got frustrated in Zero. I don't know whether that's because it controls better, or as I said before, I knew the mechanics, I knew to just bomb every nook and cranny when I was lost. The stealth section added a lot in my opinion - I really enjoyed that part. It was totally unexpected, and incredibly satisfying. In Super I got lost a lot. I didn't know what I was doing, and there were sections that I had to google to figure out (that fucking wall you can walk through after Riddley still makes me angry). Not saying it's a bad game, because it's clearly not, it's phenomenal. I'm happy that it was my entry into the series, as it was so good it made me want to play all of the Metroidvanias ever. Side note: how close are the Souls games to Metroidvanias? I noticed someone mentioning that they're the modern interpretation of the genre, and I think I agree. They're missing is the equipment needed to proceed though, which is really an essential part of the genre

It's incredibly shallow, but the host's lisp drives me nuts to the point I can't listen to the show. Especially as she's constantly saying "mythtery"

Useful site. I still feel like a monkey looking at a textbook though. Loads of words and things that mean nothing to me. -
Oh god, it's gotten so much worse. I'm also playing too many games right now, which means I never finish any of them. Most of my time is The Witcher (still) and Monster Hunter - where I've hit a brick wall and need a break. I think I'm about 50% of the way through The Witcher now, I'm level 17 and nearly done with Novigrad. Fortunately Metal Gear games are pretty short, and very enjoyable, however adding 2 more JRPGs to that list was probably a bad idea.

So...my computer is officially fucked, to the point it'll cost me around £300 to fix fully. Which means I'm set on getting a new PC. I'd like to save as much money as possible, and for now, I would like it to essentially run word/excel and indie games, with a view to upgrade later (when I have the money). The problem is, I have literally no idea where to start. Can anyone give me an idea of where to go to look for stuff to build a PC, and if you're used to this thing, an estimate of the cost for what I'm looking for. -
I will try it tonight!

Wow, good advice, I didn't even know that was a thing. How do you then proceed to choke them? Since square is choke, but also shoot.

I picked up MGS2/3 on sale and tried out some MGS2 last night. FUCK, it's an absolute bitch to control! I had to stop, do a bunch of VR missions before it felt...adequate. The thing that bothers me the most, is that to grab a guard, you need to get up behind them, within range (and no button prompt appears to say if you are) - which is hard in some cases due to the isometric view, then you have to stop and grab them. Following that you have to spam square so the guard goes uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-snap. I thought MGS2 was a PS2 game?! Why does it control like ass? Why are the ridiculous neck breaking "uh" sounds still in there? That said, despite throwing my vita at a cushion for 20 minutes learning how to play (because the guide it comes with is fucking useless), I kept picking it back up. It seems super fun.

If you like stealth games, then yeah, it's worth playing. It's not the best game-play-wise, but it's got some great moments. It's also one of the few stealth games that does getting caught well. The fire fights and CQC that break out when you're caught feel really good. They feel panicked and tense like they should. Plus I enjoyed the characters. Even if you know what's going it happen, playing as the character is great.

I think I prefer Zero Mission, but I think that might be because I had already played super and learned the mechanics. I should go back and play Super again.

I've always had the attitude that you don't owe the company you work for anything. As long as you do the job and get paid for it, the transaction is complete. That said, don't ditch them without handing in notice, that's a bit wrong, although it doesn't sound like you'd do that. The best way to leave is to find a new job and tell them you're leaving. Don't mince words, just do what you need to do. I have never heard "I wonder how a real X would do this." I've worked at a few small companies, and now at a big university, but everything has been professional. I've often heard "this is how we should do it" but I doubt that's uncommon.

The combat isn't really what I enjoy from the Witcher anyway. It's janky at best, down right bad at worst.

I do enjoy getting trophies, it's not like it's the reason I buy games, but it's a nice incentive for me to do things I wouldn't normally bother to do. It also massively extends the life span of games I buy. I would never have finished DA:I if it wasn't for my platinum thirst.
-
I can show it off to all my friends to prove how good at video games I am.
-
But then I won't get the trophy.

Oh hey, I played some Ground Zeroes. It really good. MGS V has now shot up my list of most anticipated games.
-
I wish I had played it on the hardest difficulty, I'm on blood and broken bones, and it's just slightly too easy. Too far to go back now though.
-
I'm still in Novigrad, but a good 6 levels above what the main quest line suggests. I even failed a few quests, because I did them in an order I wasn't supposed to. I feel like the witcher suffers from levels being too few and far between, and when you do level up, it's rather anti-climactic. Still, I've managed to out level my area because the side quests are damn good, trivialising the main quest. So confused!

Yeah, I realised my gear is atrocious for what I want to do. I spent a few hours getting mats for a lance, then realised I hated it and now I'm trying to gear up for my preferred weapons. Choosing gear now feels super restrictive. Time I took a break from MH though, it now officially has 100 hours and that is ridiculous for me. Normally drop games around the 50 hour mark.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

I normally run out of weekly podcasts by Thursday (3 video game podcasts, one philosophy, 2 science and 1 critical thinking), having to jump into back catalogues of other podcasts (History of Rome at the moment) for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, my phone has now reached the point that it will not play sound at all, so I'm going to have a huge amount of stuff to listen to when I finally get a new phone. I generally listen on my commute and while I'm at work. Also if I'm cooking alone or doing chores alone I'll listen to. So beastcast sounds great. More games!- 1367 replies
